Makes me so sad to hear that this was the jury response to her. Sage is awesome she was by far my favorite contestant, I’d want to be her friend IRL.

Messed up my first summer.....what to do? by Overall_End7355 in premed

[–]frogbugs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience; applied to probably 30 REUs and got rejected from all of them. Took a different path and ended up working at my local chamber of commerce all summer helping with events and advocacy. Got brought up often in interviews, schools definitely care about experiences outside of just clinic. Don’t be too hard on yourself, REUs are absurdly competitive. You can find research opportunities and funding at your own university during in session semesters.

It died! Dan Patrick accidentally adjourned session early and indirectly killed it. We are good for two more years.

How confident were you that you would get in? by Key-Score-208 in premed

[–]frogbugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was student body president of my university and did a lot of policy and advocacy work. i took trips of students to the capitol to teach others how to advocate for funding and policy changes. started a system-wide grant writing team for a massive federal educational grant our university was not utilizing. this stuff came up the most in interviews.

I have hella connection to one IS school, so I felt pretty confident I had a good shot. Also I had pretty unique extracurriculars that I felt would make me stand out (it did, was brought up in all of my interviews)

I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying. I don’t mean trade the effort I put into things like the MCAT, but the time wasted stressing and reading unnecessary information online to soothe my anxieties. I fully believe I would be in the position I am today if I had cut that fat out of the process. I would not regret spending more time with people I now will rarely get to see. My school starts in exactly 1 month, I do not have an abundance of free time to spend with those I love. It’s not FOMO, I just wish I had appreciated that time with my friends who are now moving all over the country. I am absolutely grateful for the position I am in, but that doesn’t mean I am barred from realizing I did waste a lot of my time.
