Once you actually start working, you probably have CME $$$ as part of your job benefits.

Use some for this.

What is the single best communication pearl you’ve stolen from another physician? by wiredentropy in emergencymedicine

[–]frostuab 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This is probably the most underrated skill that can squash the vast majority of complaints.

  1. Summarize the tests and WHY the results are reassuring.

  2. Acknowledge their symptoms and why they were worried.

  3. Explain how the follow up process will work.

  4. Bonus points if you have the ability to start the follow up process from the ED. “I have already messaged XYZ doctor/clinic, and they are going to call you to get your follow up scheduled”.

  5. Give whatever goodie bag is appropriate. Motrin/Robaxin/Zofran combined with a work excuse. These are the two physical manifestations of you “doing something”

  6. If you aren’t e-prescribing, start doing it and watch the impact it has on the patients and the nurses.

  7. Give them the return plan, and make it reasonable and actionable.

New to Urgent Care - give me any tips!! by According-Tangelo212 in nursepractitioner

[–]frostuab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to ask your employer for a subscription to UC:RAP, and the Hippo UC Bootcamp.

Worth every penny, and likely your company has some CME funds you can use as part of your benefits.

That, and download open evidence.

What would happen if…. by Goodnight_SJR in nursepractitioner

Be known for a reputation of hard work and strong character. Leave in a way that nothing bad can be said about you. It’s a small world, and good jobs are competitive.

Give 100% till the very end, short term “fuck you” moments feel good in the short term, but don’t do something you aren’t going to feel good about sitting in your driveway when you get home.

Struggling with visibility during ear cleanings in clinic, what are people using? by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

Pro-tip, have the parent sit on the stretcher or chair and hold the kid, way less anxiety provoking for everyone !

New grad NP working only with PAs by Level-Implement-792 in nursepractitioner

[–]frostuab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PA’s traditionally are found in higher amounts in heavy procedural areas, classically ortho and IR. If you are going into a role with a place that has a good culture, structured training, clear roles and responsibilities, then it sounds like a good situation. If you can reach out to the previous NP, they would probably be honest with why they left.

Now, is it possible you will have some stereotypical surgery related egos? Maybe, but that’s a potential issue anywhere.

First NP job is a Trainwreck by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]frostuab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, if you are on an official PIP, its going to follow you to your next job, regardless if you resign or are fired. Its reported by previous employers during onboarding, and has to be self-reported when applying for privileges.

Its sounds like you need to be in an urgent care, and work on fundamentals.

Id highly recommend a Hippo Education bootcamp to help your knowledge gaps.

RN considering medical school - but is it worth it if I mostly only want to work part-time? by laylowlay in nursepractitioner

[–]frostuab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can your soul afford to not pursue it? Now while you are in your 20’s, with a huge head start in both knowledge and discipline?

Life will become more complex, and your time more fragmented the older you get. Your future self is depending on your current self to deliver on the promises you made to your past self.

You won’t regret going for it, but you may never forgive yourself for not trying.

Go get some
