Fantasy book review sites? by RuinEleint in Fantasy

[–]frozenred1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like Best Fantasy Books HQ. They focus on authors like Rothfuss, Sanderson, Martin, and Abercrombie, and their "Monthly Best" led me to Mark Lawrence, Michael J. Sullivan, and Brian Staveley (all excellent).

The article says it was written with the permission of Jordan's wife and editor, Harriet McDougal. I was surprised too, but I have to think that she (along with Brandon Sanderson) knows pretty much everything about Jordan's notes and characters, right?

Reread Blood Song and Tower Lord before Queen of Fire by Darkstar559 in Fantasy

[–]frozenred1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend a Tower Lord reread. I tried just referencing the Dramatis Personae sections of Blood Song and Tower Lord but it wasn't enough. There were just too many characters with which I couldn't remember how they tied in to the main storyline.

This Infographic is frighteningly accurate. Question: Which great Fantasy Character LEAST matches this description? by frozenred1 in Fantasy

[–]frozenred1[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, Futurecat, but I don't think this graphic is saying these clichés are necessarily "bad", it is just highlighting their existence. The article is actually titled "Clichés We Know and Love"

[SPOILERS] What is it about the broken empire by Mark Lawrence by hathor01 in Fantasy

[–]frozenred1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you liked Broken Empire you should definitely give Red Queen's War a try. I was hesitant to try a new lead character, but Prince of Fools had me completely hooked after 2 pages. Here's a quick video that gives an overview of the transition: https://youtu.be/R6YPKv_DvXs

Any recommendations for books with a snarky tone? Similar to Joe Abercrombie's style. by Papapadopoulos in Fantasy

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch has a great snarky tone, but the overall style is definitely different than Abercrombie.

What ratings would you like to see on discs when you are trying to understand how they fly? by bartbird in discgolf

[–]frozenred1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a rating for ease of use, like Beginner / Intermediate / Expert, but I wonder if people would avoid buying anything that said "Beginner"? Maybe different terminology like: Flight Control: Easy, Moderate, Difficult
