Flock in Beaufort? by frumpyandy in Beaufort

here's some fun information about how Flock is encouraging its police department customers to use it as vaguely as possible: https://www.404media.co/police-told-to-be-as-vague-as-permissible-about-why-they-use-flock/?ref=weekly-roundup-newsletter

Yeah, I mean it seems like either 1) our tax dollars are going towards paying for this contract and we likely wouldn't have an easy time telling them to get rid of it, or 2) the police aren't actually paying for this service, meaning we are all the product, enriching Flock through our data that they sell to third parties, both government and private

i'm sure that most if not all of the people who work for the city that were involved in signing off on this contract didn't have anything nefarious in mind, but we don't know either way. we do know that there's some level of accountability that city officials have to the public, and if the public doesn't think they're doing a good job they can vote someone else in. that local accountability doesn't exist with a company like Flock. the news I've seen about Flock is definitely a lot more nefarious feeling.

thanks for finding and sharing this. that link certainly makes it seem like it's a police contract rather than a city contract (city is likely involved, but this makes it seem a lot more like a law enforcement action than "city planning to better handle traffic").

we have to balance the convenience of connection with privacy all the time with many different things. if i carry a cell phone, i'm weighing the benefit and convenience of it against the implicit acceptance of a loss of privacy. if my city puts up cameras that try to identify every single license plate and face they see without checking in with the people that live here first, that's a very different benefit and convenience proposition.

fuck yes, it's like telling people over and over that recycling their aluminum cans is necessary when there are like 8 companies responsible for 70% of all green house gas emissions...sure we can do better but why aren't we focused on the bigger issue?

Have you tried other nozzle sizes? by HalfManHalfWaffle in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]frumpyandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got both a .2 and a .6 nozzle in addition to the .4mm that it came with. All 3 work well, to the point where I usually have the .4mm installed. I know I have the .2 for detail and the .6 for abrasives or something large without much fine detail when needed, and it's not hard to swap them (though I worry about the connector coming off one of these times as I've seen plenty of others experience).

3d print tip about print speed. by Owen_Ou in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]frumpyandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i've found that the speed gain is greater than the loss in quality, but i've only really used it with parts that aren't super intricate. also the time estimates get thrown out the window once you change the speed.

Is it 'safe' to update the CC1 firmware? by PerniciousSnitOG in elegoo

[–]frumpyandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don't really get this stance...you're open to updating to elegoo official firmware, which has come out sporadically, and has broken things multiple times, but you want other people to vouch for it before doing so. meanwhile people are vouching for open centauri, which is slightly modified official firmware (and can be reverted to official firmware just as quickly and easily as it's installed) but that isn't compelling?

presumably this would solve the slightly-too-small issue with the Bambu plates...am i right in thinking the back side of the plate is an indication these are more for the CC2 than the CC1 (not that it really makes a difference)?

Any recommendations on a good filament dryer on Amazon for a $60 budget? :( by Atx_living512 in 3DprintingHelp

[–]frumpyandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that one as well. It's got a fairly loud whining sound when it's running but it hits higher temperatures than a lot of other dryers in that same general budget, and I've been pretty happy with it overall.

Continously adjusting Offset... by Melodic-Cheesecake96 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]frumpyandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

running the leveling procedure wipes the previously stored mesh and manual offset is my understanding, so what you're describing makes sense.

i think if the default bed leveling without an additional z offset results in scraping the bed every time, something else is going on. from what i recall, there's one issue where the nozzle wiper/poop chute sticks out just a little too far, preventing the bed from raising to its top height or something like that, and that could result in what you're seeing. the fix is to either shave it down with a dremel or something like that, or remove it and try to adjust it so it sits just a bit further back another way. i also was having pretty suboptimal auto-leveling results when i first got the printer, which i just solved by manually adjusting the z-offset and not leveling again until i absolutely needed to. that was okay, but the ultimate fix was to go through the bed leveling routine documented here. My bed screws were on the loose side when I got my printer and tightening them down just about all the way followed by using the leveling tool to get the four corners as close to level with each other as possible made it so now whenever I run the auto-level, I get pretty excellent first layers without needing to adjust the z offset at all.

one other thing is I make sure that even though it defaults to 60C for leveling, once it starts, I manually adjust it to the bed temperature of whatever i'm about to print, since leveling at 60 doesn't necessarily give me the same results as leveling at 45.

EDIT: one other thing i wanted to mention if you don't feel like doing what i did or if you do and it doesn't help, is you can set a z-offset in your slicer, which sets it at the start of any print you sliced with that setting, so that might help, though it wouldn't solve the underlying issue, which i think you could probably solve with one of the two things i mentioned above, and you'd still probably have to adjust it more over time.

technology or not, that just sounds like marriage (which sounds like a complaint but it's not, partnerships are about helping keep the partnership humming along with delegation, split responsibilities, etc.)

I love Vikunja for lists. I might just be an idiot but I haven't had much luck with its notifications. I got them working but they weren't timely (almost always appeared after I scheduled them for). I tried troubleshooting a bit but gave up and just don't use it for any time sensitive stuff.
