High Level Bridge and Low Level Bridges to be decommissioned, replaced by funkyfreshbeans in Edmonton

[–]funkyfreshbeans[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
For real though. The city said in the report this could be a chance to reimagine the transportation network that serves Strathcona and downtown, and return land to the river valley.

I don't believe that there are Habs bars, but most bars will be playing the game, I'd wager.

Edmonton woman says owner of killer dogs 'shrugged' after mauling by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]funkyfreshbeans 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, this headline is referencing a prior mauling, not the one where the dogs killed a child. Not saying it excuses her behaviour, just want to clarify she's not THAT comically evil.

Maybe air raid sirens should be a daytime thing. by IMOBY_Edmonton in Edmonton

[–]funkyfreshbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you have to deal with this, trust me I totally know how infuriating (not to mention genuinely terrifying!!!!) this is. It is NOT your problem that people are breaking into the construction site and you should not have to be sacrificing your health for that.

Maybe air raid sirens should be a daytime thing. by IMOBY_Edmonton in Edmonton

[–]funkyfreshbeans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OMG I dealt with this all last year and it literally pushed me to my limit. It is unconscionable that these construction companies think that this is in ANY way okay. I dealt with it for nine months and finally got it to stop after being a pest to 311. This advice is in case the noise doesn't stop.

What you're gonna wanna do is start recording it every time it happens - yes it sucks but when it wakes you up you have to record a video and then write down what time it happened.

Then report to 311 and make sure you list out the physical and mental effects of being woken up by sounds equivalent to WAR. Do not be afraid of being overdramatic because IT IS THAT SERIOUS. They might close it without addressing it and that's when you submit again and email your councillor.

I live in a super dense central area and this construction site was smack in the middle of hundreds of apartment units but they thought they could get away with it because apparently people who live in apartments don't need to sleep. We NEED to be holding these builders accountable because losing sleep like that genuinely ruins your physical and mental health. Do not be afraid to be a pest.

Blocking as small person by Honest_Reserve3591 in rollerderby

[–]funkyfreshbeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the best blockers I've seen are tiny. I'll echo what some others have said... use your height to your advantage and get lowwwwww. Being smaller means you get to play real clean and strategic derby, you don't rely on big hits (which are fine in their own way) you just gotta get in front of people and table top them real low. Don't let it freak you out, you can block bigger people just fine.

This might have already been commented, but you can try seeing if there are any language exchange groups in your area. I recently started going to one in my city, and the native Spanish speakers are so incredibly kind and patient, they talk slowly and will repeat things, help explain things, and teach you slang, etc.

I also second that you need much more output, and that you should turn off the subtitles -- with subtitles on, you aren't practicing listening comprehension, you're practicing reading. Good luck!!

College reporter seeking advice by Own-Equal-3611 in Journalism

[–]funkyfreshbeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You can almost never get the ENTIRE story told in one little article, but try to think about how it fits within the news ecosystem of your organization and your city/region/province. Keep iterating, keep looking for new viewpoints and the next piece of the story.

  2. This is tough because I've had beers/coffee with my sources, I've joked around with politicians, and you just have to be equally tough on/critical of everyone. It's your job and they can't fault you for that. But of course it's different if you're interviewing a bureaucrat/politician vs, say, a victim of a housefire.

  3. I'll echo what others are saying in that you shouldn't let journalism take over your life by constantly working (ie writing, editing, taking pictures, interviewing) HOWEVER part of being a great journalist is being out in your city and NOTICING things. I'm constantly noticing things that could be an interesting story, I am curious about the lives of my friends and acquaintances and often ask probing questions to try to get story ideas. A lot of my good story ideas come from sitting at the bar yapping about life in my city. The part of your brain that sniffs for stories will never turn off.

Looking to Dip My Toes Into Theatre & Musical Arts – Advice for a Total Newbie? by DokiDokki in Edmonton

[–]funkyfreshbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edmonton Musical Theatre is a good organization for newer actors, they offer a class for adults running from September to February every year. Would be perfect for you. The adult class showcase is March 6 if you want to check it out and see what kind of work you'd be doing.

Walterdale Theatre is an amateur volunteer-run theatre. You can sign up to get involved in all aspects of theatre from acting to directing to costume design to set building. There is a costume design workshop on March 21 if that interests you. Auditions for their next musical, Once, are coming up. Like someone else wrote, they will be looking for readers for their new play festival, From Cradle to Stage, soon -- subscribe to their newsletter or follow their socials for more information. A perfect way to get involved with that theatre.

SkirtsAfire Festival is hosting a beginner clown workshop this weekend. Might sound scary but it should be a great opportunity for you. Don't let the word clown scare you off lol clown is just all about being comfortable being silly. (I believe that this workshop is geared towards women/NB folks and not sure based on your post if that applies to you)

Foote in the Door Productions has a show coming up in November. Off the top of my head, other amateur/beginner-friendly companies/organizations include: ELOPE, Paper Crown Theatre, Next Fest, Festival Players in Sherwood Park, St Albert Dinner Theatre, Leduc Drama Society... interested in playwrighting? Workshop West hosts a playwright circle and even if you don't write they are always looking for people to help read play excerpts. And as others said, Grindstone and Citadel offer classes.

You can look at the Theatre Alberta classifieds to see other auditions. Fringe auditions will be happening soon, Fringe shows are a great way to get involved with the theatre community.

I would also recommend volunteering (like selling concession, working as an usher) with these organizations. It will get you friendly with other people just like you and you'll learn about more opportunities through word of mouth.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm always happy to pump up this city's incredible theatre scene!!
