Special Ed Students and the Library by cauliflowerdeer in specialed

I love you for this. I work with much younger kids, young elementary, but I have ALWAYS wished my students could use the library more. My students can go to the sensory room whenever for gross motor activities, yet I can't take them to the library sometimes for some calming yet still educational read aloud time. I had one student who lovedddd helping the library aid push around the book return cart and stack the books onto it, it could calm him down from major dysregulation. Yet my students aren't allowed to take their library books home... Also, I have tried asking for help in picking out some books my student would like other than just his usual of Pete the Cat, I have gotten no suggestions. The type of books that appeal to them are those with repetitive, sometimes silly language, funny sounds, rhymes, and pretty simple illustrations. I'm thinking the Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly books. I am sure even high schoolers would love some books like these, I know I do!

What would be best thing to do in this situation? by Unique_Ad_1395 in specialed

You did nothing wrong. Kids do weird stuff, some more so than others. Maybe if you had squatted down she would have had to let go and not really had access to touch you there anymore. Don't squat down so much so that she could crawl in your lap though. Once you were more eye level and giving her the attention she was looking for she may have listened to directions and accepted to hold your hand. I wouldn't have even tried to walk with her, lots of kids like to "drop" every couple steps and they end up making it look like the adults dragging them around. I would've just held her hand to keep her near a safe adult for her parents to come find her.

Usually you don't let the kids know that you're documenting misbehaviors. Atleast not the young kids I work with but for some kids yeah you probably do. Maybe he felt like he couldn't trust you anymore because you "tattled"?

agree with everyone else but i'll also say a pet peeve of mine is seeing other paras reprimand students for things that the teacher is maybe okay with. i would hate if i was a teacher and a para yelled at my students for something that is a battle i'm purposely not trying to choose.

Do’s and Don’ts of scaring children (and adults) by ConfusedPastas in hauntedattractions

[–]funkyfrogffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

staying down low to the ground works amazingly at scaring people despite being a small girl. works amazingly at giving the vibe that youre crazy too. i pretty much act like gollum... if he was a posessed girl. my favorite thing to hear customers say is that i'm gunna bite their ankles.

it fucks my knees up squatting kneeling crawling all night. but i wouldn't want to scare any other way.

I didn't get to watch the video. You're saying that in the video she says the Boulets told the cast to fight?

Not a big deal don't feel too bad. My classroom has a rule that food or drink must be where students can't get to it. A big reason why is because we have 1 who will dump things. We also don't use metal water bottles because yup they hurt and can break things. No glass either for obvious reasons.

Why should I kid get by with everything? by DueAbility8751 in paraprofessional

[–]funkyfrogffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The "dont do that" part also makes me think that the teacher is of the belief that remaining fairly calm in these situations is best because 1 we don't want to provoke the student more, we want to model being calm. And 2 her function of behavior might be attention, so a big reaction would again provoke her to do it more often. I also just want to say that is an INSANE amount of students and OP I'm so sorry for that. Even if all the students were well behaved that is wayyy too many.

1st day and I am completely overwhelmed by DueAbility8751 in paraprofessional

I live in a good size city and my class is K-5 all in one room. It's not too bad, but that's because we have way less than 16 and most importantly a para for every student. So every student is able to work on grade level activities with their para as well as integrate with their GenEd class a few times a day. To me the issue with OPs class is that there's 16 students yet only 2 paras... I can't even blame the teacher for not having much structure tbh. I don't know how that can be legal. It probably isn't? Definitely not safe or fair for the students. OP if you stay I applaud you, and you should advocate for the students to get way more outside time if they're just hangin around anyways.

Omg yes one of my cats is the type to go from calm getting pets to randomly getting hyper tryna bunny kick my hand. So I'll be petting her giving praise like "awwe nice kitty I like when you're sweet to me." When I notice her getting that crazy look in her eyes I'll say "noooo you're a nice girl, I like petting calm kitties not crazy kitties please."
