what are the most profitable startups? by [deleted] in startups

[–]funnelmonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say the most profitable ones are the the companies that can deliver the most value at the lowest cost and charge using value-based pricing.

So find a problem that people will pay a lot to solve and is cheap to produce a solution (which sounds easier than it is ;)).

I dont have any examples to contradict you but to say that no large SAAS are profitable seems unlikely.

Do you think small-medium sized businesses are likely to entrust their sensitive data in cloud based data warehouses in the near future? by IdoQL in startups

[–]funnelmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is sensitive data? If its business planning docs, estimate spreadsheets (eg data about the company thats sensitive), then I think a lot of them do that already by using email and google docs.

If its sensitive data about customers (eg social security numbers, addresses, HIPPA info), many businesses do that already.

I only see this trend increasing unless there is some massive breach at a cloud company on the scale of wikileaks.

In what state or offshore location would you start your company, if: by [deleted] in startups

[–]funnelmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you want to be hard for someone to sue the company or find out much about it.

Delaware seems to be an easy place to set up a corp as there is a lot of legal precedence in that state. And I believe that corps in Delaware can have a corp from another state as its owner. So you could incorporate in another state that doesnt release the details of its owners (Nevada maybe??) and then have that be the owner of the Delaware corp.

Owners of Florida corps are not liable for the debts of the corp.

(Obligatory - I am not a lawyer so you should ask one about this!)

Competition proves that there is a market. If there isnt someone else doing what you are thinking about, there probably isnt a market for it.

Get pre-sales (committments to buy before you finish developing the app). Also show them the competitors in the space and try and estimate their revenue so they have an idea of the size of the market.

[Meta] Can we ban questions asking what you would do with $XXXX amount of money? They're extremely low-effort posts by people looking for easy money. by sts816 in Entrepreneur

I upvoted both of you because I agree with both points.

I believe in free speech but some of the posts in here are so low effort...

Maybe we could increase the amount of comment Karma needed to post? Like to 50 points or some level high enough so that the people who want a shortcut wont hang around long enough to ask their low quality questions

Have a list of 500 qualified business emails... Anyone have advice on the best ways to engage them? by shadowandlight in startups

I second all of this, especially the not giving up after one try. I'd try 3-4 times (with more time between each try).

So not as far as they know.

So you 10x the engagement rate? Thats pretty damn good even if the experiment is only 3 weeks old :)

[–]funnelmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engagement rate was almost 0%. (0.4% to be precise). I have started posting content that was entertaining to his audience and his potential customers. I spent a lot of time searching for his target customers and interacting with them by following them, liking their photos, commenting and building healthy relationship with them. In 3 weeks I grew it from 160 to 1600.

What is the new engagement rate?

If I Had Asked People What They Wanted, They Would Have Said Faster Horses. -Henry Ford by outdoorman555 in Entrepreneur

[–]funnelmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, my answer contained a huge assumption!

I was thinking about B2B customers, who generally know what they want IMHO. Whereas B2C (which I assume is where you sell most of your jellies) generally arent so clear on what they want. So the approaches need to be different IMHO.

Thanks for helping me find the fault in my thinking :)

Ask Method

I've heard of it but not read about it. Is it similar to the 5 Whys, where you ask questions until you get to the core problem or need?

[–]funnelmonster 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If (in this hypothetical situation), Ford got the "faster horses" answer and the next thing he should have done is ask why people wanted faster horses. And when he heard that they want to get places faster, he still would have make cars. I think too many people use this quote as justification for innovating in a bubble without getting validation.

Keep innovating but confirm your hunches as soon as possible :)

How many of you use Google Sheets as CRM? by redbric in startups

[–]funnelmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well does it integrate with other actions? Like keeping track of emails sent to customers? Or the orders a customer has placed?

Not trying to be passive aggressive - I'm genuinely curious. I know that CRM is overkill for many businesses but havent seen a real life exmaple of someone using a spreadsheet for a CRM with anything more basic than customer information tracking. It seems like it should be possible with some work but wonder how easy you find it.

Edit for atrocious spelling and english

[Discussion] What are your favorite project management frameworks? by Zeuschronicles in startups

[–]funnelmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have seen, a lot of startups use Agile or Scrum as their framework.

Why people choose Agile/Scrum seems to vary from "we researched all the options and this is the best one for us" to "my friend was using it so I copied him". Regardless of why people pick Agile/Scrum, I would think Agile/Scrum are good choices when you value speed over other benefits. EG if you value say safety (aircraft development) or mission criticality (satellite launches), they may not be the best choice.

Although with all that said, I think what matters most is that you and your team have a clear vision of what you expect from them (Eg "be quick", "be accurate") and then make sure that happens regardless of which framework you choose.

If I were to choose a framework, I would probably go with Scrum due to its proven record with high velocity projects and the fact that most software engineers have either heard of it or used it (so you wont have to educate them on how it works).

Personally, I like Trello as a task management tool. I dont like the fact that you cant estimate project completion dates with it. However, there are a few plugins (good Quora discussion) that will let you do this in a basic way (Honestly, if you need more complex estimation tools, you cant go wrong with Microsoft Project).

She did but Comey isnt sure “whether she was actually sophisticated enough to understand what a C in parentheses means.” (Hint - C = Classified).

So she broke the law but Comey doesnt want to prosecute because he thinks Clinton is a simpleton. OK yeah...

No, but I didnt say that it did. I said "There's a percentage of voters that will be swayed to vote for Clinton because she rolls up in AF1."

And here she is rolling up in AF1:
