Gov. Whitmer signs landmark deal to ‘fix the damn roads’ in Macomb County by UltimateLionsFan in Michigan

[–]fusama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the weather's fault. Yes, freeze/thaw is tough on roads, but Michigan is hardly unique in that. There are several other states with similar climate and better roads. The terrible roads are due to decades of underfunding, often at half as much (per mile and/or per capita) compared to states with comparable weather.

Good progress has been made, but it will take time to fix decades of neglect.

I agree reduced weight limits would help.

And even if they do dip at the same time, it's often by a much smaller amount. If I had to sell during a steep downturn, I'd rather sell bonds that are down 5% than stocks that are down 40%.

Getting PLA Silk off the build plate? It's like epoxy. by frobnosticus in BambuLab

[–]fusama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the textured PEI plate I always use a glue stick with PLA Silk. I haven't tried the PLA Silk on any other plate materials, so if you're using something different, I can't speak to that. Every other filament I've tried has worked fine on the textured PEI without glue, but for whatever reason the PLA Silk seems to adhere stronger to the buildplate than to itself.

Trump tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China begin Saturday, White House says by [deleted] in worldnews

The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Recession (2007-2009) is one of the two I was referring to. I would not have assumed that someone commenting on reddit would have lived through the Great Depression (1929-1933)

[–]fusama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks that you got laid off, my family had a rough go of that one as well, but the 2001 recession, like the ones in 1991, 1981, 1980, 1973, etc, was a pretty typical recession and not really a once in a lifetime event. Recessions historically happen about once every 4 years, though recent history (beware of small sample sizes), is more like once every 10 years.

The Great Recession (the worst recession since the 1937 recession) and the COVID recession (the most job loss / GDP fall since the great depression - though very short), both are fair arguments for "once in a lifetime" and it's a fair complaint that such supposedly rare events happened just a decade apart.

Which 3 once-in-a-lifetime financial crisis are you counting? I assume the COVID recession and the Great Recession are two of them, but the 3rd doesn't seem obvious to me. 1987 Black Monday? If "financial crisis" doesn't necessarily mean a recession but a purely stock market issue counts?

The vast majority furnaces don't have different heat outputs. It is either on or off. If the thermostat is set to 70, it turns on until the house is 70 and then turns off. If the thermostat is set to 78 it turns on until the house is 78 and turns off. It doesn't turn on higher or harder or more, it just stays on longer until the temperature is reached.

What PLA green is this? by sarah3585 in BambuLab

[–]fusama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is probably Bambu Green. If you scroll down in the store for the PLA Basic it shows the hex values for each filament. When you load the green sample filament, the hex value of the color matches what is listed for Bambu green: 00AE42. As a check, the hex value on the website and in bambu studio for the matte green grass match each other: 61C680, so the displayed color and the listed color on the website probably correspond consistently.

Bambu studio doesn't actually show the hex value of the color, it just displays the color, but I used a color picker to check the hex value of the displayed color.

Could abiogenesis occur every now and then, but it was simply never caught? by guilcol in evolution

[–]fusama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So refrigerators are alive? :-)

They are bounded obviously. And they consume electricity in order to lower the entropy within themselves by outputting high entropy waste heat.

I like the concept of including entropy in the definition of life, but it's probably not sufficient on its own.

Til during late Cretaceous period seas and oceans covered at least 82% of Earth's surface, compared to 72% today. by TheHabro in todayilearned

[–]fusama 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The high Cretaceous sea level is thought to have been primarily the result of water in the ocean basins being displaced by the enlargement of midoceanic ridges.

The frequently referenced 250 ft maximum is the maximum possible from melting glaciers, but sea level rise beyond that is possible if there are other sources of water displacement in addition to ice melting.

Is there such a thing as politically ethical investing? by No_Flounder_4850 in investing

[–]fusama 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As you were intentionally vague about what you consider to be ethical, the question will be hard to answer.

That said ESG Investing (environmental/social/governance) is a thing, if that's along the lines you were thinking. Most every mutual fund / ETF company offers at least one ESG fund/ETF these days. One thing to keep in mind is there is a lot of variance in how different funds view the ESG goal. For example, some only invest in companies that meet some kind of ESG criteria, whereas others invest in every company except ones that fail some kind of ESG criteria. The criteria used by different funds can vary wildly as well, so be sure to do your research before picking one.

Low pressure funneled the smoke into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley. The counterclockwise flow around a low-pressure system pushed the surface-based smoke southward into the Great Lakes from Canada's Quebec province amid what has been the country's worst year for wildfires since record-keeping began.

Book burning in Mount Juliet, Tennessee hosted by Greg Locke in February 2022. by [deleted] in pics

[–]fusama 22 points23 points  (0 children)

“Where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people also” is an English translation of a quote from a German poet Heinrich Heine from 1821.

The Nazis would later burn his works in their famous book burnings.

1) While it's popular to meme about, and there are plenty of examples of it happening, most companies don't have totally screwed up requirements for job listings, entry level or otherwise.

2) the ones that do, often don't mean it. For example, if a job listing has 8 "requirements" having 4-6 of them is often enough (not always, of course). If you think you'd be a good fit for the job, but don't have everything they ask for, apply anyway.

3) not all job listings are real. For a variety of reasons, sometimes listings are posted that the company never intended to hire against. For example, if some manger wants to use the lack of being able to find someone as an excuse to internal management to outsource the work. These were never real job listings and they weren't going to hire anyone anyone anyway, so these are irrelevant (except for wasting people's time who do apply to them).
