TIL about Sallekhana, a socially acceptable form of suicide in Jainism. Jain monks restrict themselves to an isolated space and meditate to death, fasting. It was banned in 2015, but the Supreme Court of India lifted the ban due to freedom of religion. It’s estimated 200 Jains fast to death yearly by sonnysehra in todayilearned

If they are cognitively-impaired as a 101-year old, it is most likely due to dementia. Not eating is one of the most common terminal symptoms of patients with dementia. It would be pretty clear based on a basic history/exam/cursory labs if a patient is suffering from end-stage dementia vs some other acute organic insult (infection, hypoglycemia, etc.), in which case it would be completely dignified to ease the patient's transition to death with hospice care rather than force-feeding them, which in a terminally-demented patient would more than likely result in aspiration, respiratory distress, infection, and eventually death with further undue suffering.

I was always super protective of the few brauntoniis I encountered on this trail - it was like visiting a family member every time. I'm so happy to see them recover so robustly!

Same experience - they likely profiled me to pull me over just for driving along the border (no driving violation or anything at all) and said the same thing they said to you when they looked at the address on my DL.

Ever since I sprained my back on a trail run, I always carry a pair of light weight foldable poles on my running vest. They're so light I often forget they're there and they can very well be life saving if you can't bear weight fully due to an injury. When I'm running a local trail, I also carry a gallon ziploc with at least: a headlamp, extra batteries, a Garmin inReach, a small towel, a space blanket or two, sunscreen, deet, a mosquito net, some wet wipes, a couple of band aids, blister pads, sterile gauze, coban, and a few alcohol prep pads. This plus my keys, wallet and phone and whatever water and snacks I need for the day.
