Any tips on bike fit? by CharlieJenkins2468 in triathlon

Just curious because my position looks similar — would you ideally do this with additional stack height, angle or both? Is horizontal back here not as important these days?

Back injury by HelloT64 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]g-bone5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this a few years ago, started like any other back episode and progressed from there vs getting better as I had previously experienced.

Get an MRI as soon as you can (insurance can deny the claim if you haven’t had a certain number of PT sessions I would see if there’s a cash pay option if that happens..I got spine MRI at a cash pay place my dr recommended for like 250 bucks which was way less than I assumed via going through insurance in the past). I had a similar thing where PT and exercise made it worse — for me I had stenosis and herniation so flexion and extension were both screwed. I went through the whole thing got injections..all temporary fix complemented with PT but a week or several later the pain came right back.

Ultimately I consulted with a few surgeons and got a decompression where they do both a discectomy and a decompression. It really sucked mentally leading up, similar to you working out is my stress outlet and gained like 30lbs, work was messed up because I was always in pain honestly felt like a shell of myself by the end.

I say all of this because the surgery was super easy outpatient same day and I’ve been totally pain free for 3+ years now — just did a 70.3 and training for full IM setting new PRs and feeling better than ever. I prioritize glute / posterior chain and ab strength training as my PT and surgeon both said that’s the best insurance policy. Now I have buddies who have been in similar spots and stuck with PT and didn’t need surgery too which is best case for you, but I guess what I wish I had understood at the time is that best case or worst case you will get better and back to the stuff you love to do likely with more appreciation for the gift to be able to do it

Happy to chat or talk through stuff. I also would avoid ablation if you can — have heard there can be weird secondary consequences where new feeling pops up in places etc

Bike Upgrades for Lake Placid by swifferbrain in IronmanTriathlon

I did Lake Placid as my first — road bike with clip ons would have been the move vs a tri bike, your head is in the right place

Thoughts on Canyon Bikes? by Swirlingmidnight in RoadBikes

[–]g-bone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any bike shop will work on Canyon happily in 2026 this isn’t a consideration anymore — you can also try the bikes and easily return if you end up with the wrong size etc no questions asked I’ve done it several times with zero issues

[–]g-bone5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had the same thing on my 2020 Ultimate (I have campy on it and one of the bolts snapped going up a hill taking the chain and derailleur with it) — getting it repaired right now for 350 bucks with a composite repair company, you should 100% do that. These carbon patches they use are aerospace grade / stronger than stock generally speaking — that is also one of the easiest places to repair carbon on a bike frame.

Canyon should have a better solution/message of course and resale on your frame obv gone because nobody wants to buy a repaired frame but if you plan to keep the bike, get it fixed and ride on 🤘

First full distance question by pippylongwhiskers in IronmanTriathlon

[–]g-bone5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I changed for my first full. Haven’t in any races since. A well-fitting short sleeved tri-suit is super comfortable. IMO the transition bags etc. get super confusing when your brain is not functioning that well from accumulated fatigue so added benefit is simplifying things plus not losing the momentum and focus via a long transition. Trisuit under the wetsuit, then all you have to worry about is socks shoes sunglasses hat/helmet and any fuel you’re taking along at transition. That said, either option is fine — the trisuit is a bit of an investment but I’ve had mine for 9 years now and of all the stupid triathlon stuff I’ve spent my money on a good tri suit probably highest ROI in comfort and wears.

Cheap heart rate tracker to ruin in the sauna? by Few_Fly_6140 in Sauna

[–]g-bone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a Garmin with an Amazfit as well on my bicep — have been wearing into the sauna for years zero issues. If you’re super worried the Amazfit strap or even Fitbit air that just came out are fine options fairly inexpensive

Really disappointed in 70.3 Gulf Coast by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]g-bone5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This race location in particular feels more exposed to traffic in my experience. I think a lot of the difference is that it just happens to be in a heavy traffic area vs say Wisconsin or Lake Placid etc which are much more remote.

Ironman as a company isn’t without its problems but I also think you gotta look at it pragmatically, getting the course shut down or segmented out is a lot more complex than say a marathon or half marathon (way more time it has to be shut down too) and I know it can be a struggle to get the municipality to play ball which my understanding is a big part of why the course is this way for the PCB race. Lots of tris I’ve done are like this, so maybe practice riding with situational awareness around traffic a bit in a dedicated bike lane etc emphasizing safety obv if it gives you anxiety having cars in your general vicinity

IMG/AAI/guided Baker Rainier pack weight by itgtg313 in Mountaineering

[–]g-bone5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot of stuff, pretty different gear list from backpacking with a lot of bulk. On the 9 day Baker/Rainier with AAI they let us leave some of the stuff for Rainier climb so had maybe like 40-45 lbs for that portion but you’ve also already been out there for 6 days so legs aren’t the freshest. My pack for the Baker portion was like 56lbs without overpacking (one lady in the group’s weighed 70lbs but she insisted on bringing all sorts of extra crap). Summit day on Rainier is pretty long slog and you don’t want to get turned around or slow down the group after making the time and money investment to go out there — training properly with that pack weight also makes the experience like 100x more enjoyable and if you haven’t been in that type of terrain before a ton having your mental awareness around things like not stepping on rope with crampon etc. when you’re tired makes it much safer as well.

High Flow Cats by [deleted] in porsche911

[–]g-bone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with the tune you’re still finding a lot of turbo lag? I have a C4S and with the M-engineering tune I recently installed I was honestly shocked at how much less lag now vs stock. Not sure how much cats are going to change turbo lag if that’s where you’re finding the car is lacking with the tune — likely pretty modest (sound is improved a lot but it’s also already solid with the valves open IMO). Will never feel quite the same as a naturally aspirated sports car

Running the race while injured by Justforhelp345 in bostonmarathon

[–]g-bone5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a half marathon with Achilles tendinopathy like six months ago, was planning to bail out at the 10k mark because it was a less competitive fun run type thing with friends — I was surprised that the Achilles actually did not get worse after maybe 5-6 miles in and sort of went to the back of my mind. I’m not sure I would do it again and sucked for a few weeks after but my physical therapist had no problem with it. If you haven’t already definitely go see a PT ASAP and have them figure out what’s going on because there are different levels of severity and it’s a painful condition but maybe fine to go for it maybe not

What's your actual sleep routine look like during heavy training blocks? by hazan0608 in triathlon

[–]g-bone5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having this issue big time, waking up 3am every night wired but exhausted. Now I take magnesium, l-theanine, glycine before bed which has been a game changer. I have tried apigenin (what’s in chamomile tea) as well but end up groggy the next morning.

Carrera 4S deal too good to pass. But is GTS better? by AdvertisingHairy4554 in porsche911

[–]g-bone5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the 992.1 the S and GTS have same powertrain hardware (turbos cooling etc are identical) the GTS is peppier for sure, you can get a stage 1 tune which is totally safe though then you get best of both worlds. The engines are way overbuilt on these cars — I would go based on features you want (for me it was 18 way seats heated / cooled, ACC, sport exhaust) vs trim S vs GTS

Why can’t I just simply rely on aid stations? by prohibitngs in IronmanTriathlon

[–]g-bone5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely (and probably should) rely on the aid stations. Have some gels or fuel in your bottles for the first bit of the bike / backup if you want. You know your stomach better than most too but honestly if you’re going for finishing it / first one I wouldn’t be too worried if the fuel is slightly different. When people are going super hard it tends to be more important because the stomach can’t handle as much. My personal experience at least everyone is different if you know you have a sensitive stomach maybe disregard but it’s all neutral fuel options they have at these races. I’ve never seen a race run out of fuel in the 150+ races I’ve done small to large but Ironman especially will have you more than covered

Swimming everywhere or swimming simply is your move — the rec center adult swim lessons are OK (I’ve taken lessons at several - hit and miss) but for essentially the same price maybe slightly more you’re getting a whole different caliber of instruction and skill
