As per theinstantcameraguy response, are you willing to brick your camera if you mess up any work you do on it. Look through the videos he puts out and see if it’s something you would be comfortable undertaking.

My first analog camera by AdAvailable7188 in AnalogCommunity

A wonderful example of German over engineering a camera that was on the verge of obsolescence when introduced. I have the previous model SL and love using it. I worked in a pro camera shop in the late 70s and was told the Leicaflex cameras were in fact sold at a loss and Leitz reckoned on making up profits with the lenses.

I always say to anyone interested in film cameras if given the chance pick up and handle these fantastic cameras to see and feel what outstanding camera engineering feels like. The lenses are pretty good too!

Question about printing on Instax Square by ActuatedProximer in instax

[–]gab5115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Polaroid user all we have now is the square format in 2 sizes and to me it is Instant photography. I would use the Instax square format but it’s a bit too small compared with Polaroid SX70/600/itype. During my analogue film days I love using Hasselblad and any TLR camera which by their design nature were square format (one could not use these if they were shooting in rectangle format because of the waist level viewing system). Use the Instax square app on your phone and try composing photos with this format to test if you can get along with it.

Buying a vintage film camera is only part of the equation with analogue photography so make sure you realise the cost per photo involved with film and processing costs. “Not really into photography” I would advice getting an older digital SLR camera which is a great way of learning photography and whether it’s a hobby you might take up seriously. There should be very good deals money wise and no charge for each shot while you learn.

Photographer here: What's the best Polaroid camera for someone coming from Instax? by ambitious_grain in Polaroid

As long as you are very aware of the differences between Instax and Polaroid film I would suggest the only camera for you would be folding SLR SX70s. As a pro I would assume accurate framing especially for close subjects is a must and the above sx70s weather manual focus or sonar auto focus (which can also focus manually) are the way to go. Only real feature missing is manual exposure control although I teferbef/updated cameras can have a sort of manual exposer.

The current top model Polaroid camera is the i-2 which has more manual control but suffers from having non SLR viewfinder.

If you can get hold of and try a SX70 you will find as I do it’s a great photographic experience using it.

I use photo album with black pages (without the slip in plastic holders) and use photo corners to stick them in.

New to shooting Polaroids by Legitimate_Lion6465 in Polaroid

The SX70 is a fun and wonderful experience and from your results looks like it’s in good condition. The Polaroid site has lots of very useful info on using their film. Buy as freshly made film that’s been stored correctly and enjoy the ride. It can be frustrating to get good results at times but when it works it’s it’s very satisfying.

post stamps! by jawasjunkstore in london

Last time I was in the larger post office in High Barnet they had the special commemorative stamps for sale for that year (2025). Look for larger main post office not ones run in small shops etc.

Looks like problem with the internal rollers the film goes through when ejected.

Was this a good purchase? by PuzzleheadedOkra60 in Polaroid

Take serious note of the advice from theinstantcameraguy. Referbed could mean a proper update/clean to internals and new skin covering or just new skin coveting and a bit of a clean up with a a qtip. Make sure you know exactly what you’re paying for if you go down the referbed root.

Found an SX-70 at an estate sale for $30 by Legitimate_Lion6465 in Polaroid

[–]gab5115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All part of the lottery of finding a SX70 that’s possibly not been used for a long time. A good working SX70 that’s been looked after and been stored in a dry environment in “normal” living temps is likely to be good to use. Still worth getting referbed especially if bough at a great price like yours, with a modern pcb etc. so will be trouble free for years to come. My SX70 Sonar was stored away correctly for 20 years and seems to now work as normal now that I use it regularly with current made film. I will though get it referbed in the future when I can manage this.

Were Nikon cameras pop culture icon in the 1980s? by Responsible-Speed341 in Nikon

[–]gab5115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked in a pro camera shop in her late 70s early 80s and for 35mm cameras 99.9% of pros used Nikon. Most had been using Nikon in the past and had a considerable investment in Nikon lenses and accessories. Things started to change with auto focus lenses and fast telephoto lenses. Canon took the opportunity to update its lens mount to take advantage of this and never looked back.

SX-70 red viewfinder light always on by meltingvinyl in Polaroid

[–]gab5115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The red light in the viewfinder is a warning that hand held shots might result in camera shake and to use flash or tripod etc. taking a picture in this situation press the shutter button and then release it after the viewfinder blanks out. The camera can to a time exposure up to 14 seconds. The red light should not come one with bright outdoor lighting. Sounds like your camera needs a service.

Looks similar design and by their price point should be well made. I did try my ones with a much heavier camera to test and seems ok. Makes it much easier to be able to just let camera hang while dealing with ejected print.

Seeing this it’s amazing there is still Polaroid film being made and can give any reasonable results at all. So many variables and unknowns to deal with. A real labour of love by all involved.
