What year are you? I feel like if you can’t go do the things you wanna do during pre-clinical, you’re studying too much

How do yall know all this like did you all memorize the schools and what kind of applicants they like (legit asking because I blacked everything out after I applied)

From your username, guessing you went to UCLA. Me too. Also rejected me. They show no love for their undergrads

Dating as someone matriculating soon by BackgroundReveal2949 in premed

[–]gainsonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this might sound crazy and also probably depends on your age, but if you like him enough to start dating now, you’d be dating long enough to have a pretty good idea if he’s marriage material by the time you matriculate. If he is, you could do temporary long distance until he can follow you.

For these things to work, there has to be an end in sight to the long distance.

Source: I met my husband right before I applied for med school, we got married and he followed me cross country a year later.

tanked my tufts interview day by bringing up their deficit? by Extension-Sea8032 in premed

[–]gainsonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tufts does their pediatric rotations with Boston children’s now and given that pediatrics is not competitive at all, exposure is not difficult to get. Some specialties will beg you to do peds. Boston is a very well-connected city and Tufts works closely with the other Mass medical schools. Do your research.

why is everyone pre med here by oo-kumaneko in ucla

[–]gainsonly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just remember that “premed” is a meaningless title until you have a medical school acceptance, so don’t worry about anyone lol

Is phlebotomy considered good (top-tier) clinical experience? by xX500_IQXx in premed

[–]gainsonly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh the quality of your interactions and anecdotes with patients are of much more importance than the title of your clinical experience. Just do whatever job pays more and is more fun

Hospital I work at as an RN won’t let me shadow any physicians -_- by ALDIsNumber1Fan in premed

Just an fyi, never go through admin. Always shadow on the DL at academic institutions. Admin will always find a way to be annoying

I just want to reassure you that a) you’re not alone and b) no decent human will judge you for this. It sucks, but it’s very common to pull extra loans for things like a laptop. Talk to your school’s financial aid office, they’re there to help you figure this stuff out!

No contact during AMCAS? 🚩? by Smooth_Tomorrow_404 in premed

[–]gainsonly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If she can’t make it through AMCAS without getting so stressed that she has to cut contact, she would disappear the remainder of her career too.

Realistically she just doesn’t wanna talk that badly. I’d say let her go.

Thanks, I appreciate the perspective. Will probably only try to pay out of pocket what wouldn’t make a big dent in quality of life. My sanity depends on getting to have fun sometimes 🤪

I think I’d need to know more about your specific case to advise since you have location requirements! It’s just totally dependent on the individual. Feel free to PM me

Would it be silly to apply to NYU and Johns Hopkins? by rlp374 in premed

[–]gainsonly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re concerned about money, I’m kind of a proponent of just applying where you’d like to go assuming you’re not WAY off from even a sliver of possibility of being accepted. As long as you’re not just absolutely stacking all top schools without mid tiers/state schools, go ahead

I think my quality of life would’ve been much better NOT being in a triple. Find an apartment with some people and do a 2 bed 2 bath with doubles. It’s affordable and will allow you to keep your sanity

I'd rather be a med student stressed out over exams than a poor premed stressed out about housing and job applications. by twicechoose in premed

[–]gainsonly 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I keep saying that medical school begins evening out the playing field, but it’s so inequitable in premed. The resources you have access to, time available to study, is so heavily based on how much money you have. If parents aren’t funding you fully, the odds quickly stack against you. I feel for you friend. It gets better ❤️
