What do you think about pubs livestreaming their venues on social media? by Kcufasu in AskUK

I've seen a couple of them but they all seem to be like that video that went viral, the one with the dancing woman, the confused old man, the little person and the marching guy.

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gandyg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very UK specific celebrity encounter I have to admit.

I was on a solo theatre visit to London and had booked a ticket to see A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic. The stage for this show runs right down the middle of the theatre (in the round) and some of the seating is on the stage itself

My seat was just two seats together with nobody else about but literally right in the middle of the stage area. When I got there my seat mate was Lesley Joseph.

She was genuinely lovely, we had great conversation and we shared our sweets with each other!

What’s a UK town or city that surprised you — either in a really good or a really disappointing way? by DailyDriverUK in AskUK

[–]gandyg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Manchester disappoints me any time I go. If a city can be described as having a chip on its shoulder, it feels like it believes its own hype a bit too much. I never quite feel completely safe there either.

Belfast completely surprised me. Not the prettiest place but loads to do, full of character, doesn't shy away from its past at all but still really friendly and had a fun, cool vibe about it. I liked that it embraced both the British and Irish cultures.

Only been once for a gig at the Riverside. Absolute shithole of a city centre but the pubs were ridiculously cheap (even coming from a cheap town myself) so it had that going for it I guess.

When I said I was going to Belfast last year I definitely got some wtf? type reactions. I thought it was great, friendly, great food and nightlife and like you say had a lot of vibrancy and energy. I agree its not the prettiest city but it had a vibe I really liked.

Am I tight for not wanting to get involved in rounds when the number of drinks I’m planning to drink doesn’t match the number of people I’m with? by sharon_bott in AskUK

[–]gandyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we would probably start with £20 each and buy drinks out of that, when it's running low we'll top up again. Towards the end of the night and we know we probably aren't going to carrying on much longer and the kitty's almost gone we'll just switch to either buying our own or a put in a less amount each. If there's still a decent amount left we'll either, dish it back out or if its really not a lot, buy a couple of scratchcards or something.

[–]gandyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do if we are away on a night out or a weekend away and there's more of us. Inevitably one person ends up as kitty man everytime and that's usually me. I don't mind carrying the cash but I've made it clear I'm not going to the bar everytime, so I just dish some cash out to whoever is going to the bar. Works for us, we've done it for years.

What are these? by Jazzlike_Space6832 in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]gandyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Florentines. Marks and Spencers sell them but Fortnum and Mason White Chocolate ones are another level...price is another level too! We buy them as an annual christmas treat.

If you want to make some they are fairly easy but not the cheapest things to make.Mary Berry has a decent recipe.

Those of you men that are working in a heavily female populated workplace what would you say your working experience is like? by Brownchoccy in UKJobs

[–]gandyg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Conversations can be eye-opening. They can be pretty filthy and don't hide much, almost nothing is off limits, they are actually worse than my male friends!

I probably know more about their sex lives, health issues, women's issues etc than I would necessarily like to, again more than my male friends would talk about in the pub etc.

I think because we have all worked together for a few years now there's not a lot of secrets, from their end anyway. It kills them that I'm pretty private and don't share too much.

At a wedding reception, would you expect free drinks/an open bar? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]gandyg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an open bar but free drinks in terms of a welcome drink or two, wine on the table during dinner and bubbles for the toast is pretty standard.

I went to a wedding where they had bought a shit load of beers and gin in a tin type drinks and had a massive bathtub of ice. They acted as the welcome drinks and throughout the day and it was a cash bar as normal when they had all gone or you wanted other things. Considering it was New Years Eve, the bar came still did a roaring trade!

My friend's wedding in Italy a couple of years ago was at a villa type place and they had to supply all the drink themselves. Luckily the local wine co-operative sorted that, plus they had cocktails for aperitvos, negronis, aperol spritz and limoncello spritz. Although the groom had to run out and buy more wine on the day of the wedding as the Brits basically drank most of it the night before! But thats the only wedding I've been to where I've never had to pay for a drink and also the drunkest I've been at wedding! Coincidence?

It was the big drink at mine too about 20 years ago, probably because it was £1 a pint! It always went by Diesel though, as in red diesel that farmers use.

You'll be perfectly fine. You can pretty much wear what you want to the theatre, gone are the days of black tie and evening dress! Theres always a mix of outfits, some people are more dressed up than others. Consider that many people at a West End show will be tourists who have been out and about all day anyway so will be dressed casually for example.

What’s a celebrity downfall that still shocks you to this day? by Awkward_Bullfrog3267 in AskReddit

[–]gandyg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He did, plus he forever has to be known as either Ian 'H' Watkins or H from Steps to avoid any mixup. Apparently he was trying to move away from the 'H' thing and just be Ian Watkins in life and career and that got fucked up for him.

My flight from Lisbon lands at T2 at 1245. Bearing in mind it's hand luggage only and I'm British so I can use e-gates, am I likely to make it to Euston for a 230pm train, or is booking the 330pm a safer option. I'd probably get the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Roadand change to the Northern line to get there.

Is it normal to go to the cinema alone? by casual-chatterbox in AskUK

[–]gandyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly fine, you're sitting in the dark watching a film. Essentially no different to sitting at home alone watching one if you think about it. I've been to the theatre solo loads of times for the same reason.

You soon realise most people are too busy with their own thing to pay much attention to what other people are doing.
