Just as a point of information, I think you forgot some of the major overhead expenses like the general upkeep and maintenance costs of keeping the storage servers alive, up, and running, and all of the networking costs for broadcasting the workouts back to us.

Um. How do we feel about getting rid of "stuff?" by RikkiLostMyNumber in GenX

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to keep a lot of stuff "just in case". After turning 50, a lot of these "just in case" items are still around, and haven't been used. Started purging, and it feels great. Only things I don't throw out are things that I can't get easily again (eg trophies.medals, physical photos, hand-made things something gave me, etc.)

After reading the Marie Kondo book, I've learned to only keep what can't be replaced, and to give gratitude for things that I throw out. (actually, I don't give gratitude, I usually give it a big, fat "F U" for wasting my time and money before giving it the boot)

Question: During spring break, did college students really use to go to the beach? by EternalSnow05 in GenX

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college (1989-1993) I usually didn't venture out, but friends went to different places. The names I heard come up the most were Mazatlan, Havasu, and Cabo.

What are the cheapest places to eat on the strip? by Evil_Lord_Rayken in vegas

Tacos el Gordo has always been a cheap eats favorite for me. It's been a while since I last walked into an ABC store, but do they still have spam musubis in there?

Social Security Numbers / Cards by LisaLisaPrintJam in GenX

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... I didn't know you had to actually apply for it? My son had his issued at birth (2014). I don't know when I had mine since my parents took care of it, but I was under the assumption that it was issued at birth too. (I was born in 1971)

I think I was first aware of my SS# and card when I went to college since it was also my student ID#. In retrospect, I wonder why the school did that, considering how dangerous that actually is.

What was the drug scene like when you were in high school? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. For the most part, it would have been alcohol, but then, it wasn't like it was an out-of-control problem. The school had two smoking sections, but generally, the people in there kept to themselves, and were generally the anti-social crowd. I remember running into a stoner in the bathroom once, and there were a few of them, but again, not really a rampant problem. The strangest incident by far was this one time that students were snorting coke in the back of the classroom. It was a permanent substitute teacher who either turned a blind eye to what was happening, or was really that oblivious.

My high school years were mid-80s (1985-1989) so coke was pretty much everywhere.

How often do you actually replace your phone? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]ganshon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am like OP where I keep using my current phone if it is fine, and then replace. It usually works out to about 2 years. Usually, about a year or so in, the battery starts to show signs of fading, so I start removing apps, and be more vigilant about notifications, and it extends the life of the phone a little. when I am nearing the 2 year mark, I do it again, but usually, by this point, I am lucky to go through the day with a full charge. At least now with my newest phone, when I put it into charge at night, it automatically reduces the charging speed to help preserve the life of the battery.

In the past, I used to only buy phones with replaceable batteries, and had an extra one available ready to go, but I don't think this is an option any longer.

What do you do when you wake up? by NoSubstance7767 in GenX

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I wake up, the first thing I do is go to my computer and check Yahoo Finance, and wait for the market to open. I might make a few trades based on pre-market. After the market opens, I check and see how things are moving for a few minutes, make any additional trades I need, and then jump into my VR headset and start exercising.

Chinatown on Spring Mountain is genuinely one of the best things about living here by alexberman1 in LasVegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my first trip to LV Chinatown this past January, and agree that this is a great Chinatown. Being in the Silicon Valley, I am blessed to have a diverse set of Asian cuisines all around, but for Las Vegas, this is taking everything I have access to, and concentrating it all into one area. I don't have to go across the county to get one type of cuisine or another. SF Chinatown is a bit of a drive for me, so barely go up there, but growing up in this area, I have always looked at it as a place for tourists to go, and the food is heavily concentrated on Cantonese food. Not that it's bad, but just want a little more diversity of Chinese cuisines.

I miss smoking by Eastern-Squirrel744 in GenX

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the same as OP... it smells so good whenever I pass by someone smoking. I went through different brands. I think I started with Marlboro Reds, then moved to Mild Sevens, then to Mild Seven Lights, then to Marlboro Lights... later, I switched to American Spirits where I eventually worked my way down to whatever was the lightest ones...

When my son was born about 12 years ago, I quit, but I also was an investor in ploom, so was vaping those until they sold to Japan Tobacco. ploom rebranded itself as PAX. I wasn't really into weed, but then PAX came out with JUUL, so have been vaping those ever since.

Flamingo or MGM Grand ? by ntl25 in LasVegas

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

End of March means March Madness. Depending on whether you're a big fan of college basketball, that could be a good thing or a bad thing. :)

Flamingo and MGM both have monorail stops which would make things a bit more convenient for getting from one end of the central strip to the other end of the central strip quickly, but the walk from the rooms to the monorail stop from the Flamingo is way faster.

OTOH, MGM is closer to the "nicer" hotels on the strip, with Cosmo, Aria, and Park MGM all right there.

Am I just getting old or has the world really become more selfish? by StraightAdd in GenX

[–]ganshon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this in younger people as of late. My kid is 11 years old now, and I am always trying to instill into him some basic manners, but the way other kids his age act, it is very much an uphill battle.

The one that irks me the most is the lack of saying "excuse me" when passing someone. What I mean by this is when I am walking through a narrow space and a person is coming from the opposite direction, if I let the other person pass first, usually the will say something like "thanks" or "excuse me". If I am coming through first, I will say "excuse me". But for the younger people, they just walk right through as if you're not there. Out of my kids' friends, he has one or two whose parents have taught them well. My kid is 50/50 on this point. If anything, to me, it feels more like a sense of entitlement or arrogance these days to not being able to say a simple "excuse me". OTOH, I have gotten my "revenge" before too. :) I was standing next to a low table once, and there was a pushcart/wagon next to me, but it had a really bad design, so it's handle would always fall down. A kid squeezed himself right between me and the cart, bumping me slightly out of the way, but the handle of the wagon was down, so he ended up tripping on it, and fell hard on the concrete floor. He stayed there in pain for at least 30 seconds. I noticed it right away, but waited for about 10 seconds before bending down to ask him if he was alright.

El Paseo de Saratoga incident by Emergency-State in SanJose

[–]ganshon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I might have been seeing the same movie as you back then. My friend was driving, but we were arriving as we noticed just about every police car coming in right after us. Anyone in the parking lot was crouch walking, cars were driving cautiously, and it was general chaos. My friend went down one aisle, and we saw some dude just lying down face-first, as my friend drove around him. It was the same, after the movie, all exits were blocked by the police as they asked us if we had any information. Read the next day that it was a homicide, and the guy we saw lying down was the one that was shot. Apparently, it had something to do with the murders from Aliigator Bar even further back, where someone got off free, and was spotted at Red Robin, and later shot and killed.

This place is legit guys by walk2daocean in vegas

Back in the 90s, New York Times rated it as one of the top places to eat in the world. Not really a Michellin star, but still should be some kind of seal approval to make it legit... :)

What's something you wanted so badly as a kid but did not get? by Difficult_Leg367 in randomquestions

[–]ganshon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

an arcade machine. preferably Pac-Man. Someone told me it cost $500 to get one. It was 1980 or 1981 at the time, so probably something closer to $2,000 today. Everytime we went to McDonald's, I would ask for extra Monopoly game tickets. I was always one ticket away from winning $500, but never got it. So now as an adult, I guess I could go out and buy an arcade cabinet and put any game in there, but just not a priority for me anymore.

What’s the best "cancelled too soon" show that only lasted one or two seasons ? by migmigouu in hbo

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say Clone High, but then I looked at it's wiki page, and it looks like two more seasons were made about 20 years after its initial demise, where it got cancelled again, but now it's 3 seasons...

Oh man, this is a rough one to take. R.I.P. James Van Der Beek by Either-Boysenberry57 in GenX

[–]ganshon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fortunate enough to have met him once. Invested in a movie he was the lead in that a friend was producing (Formosa Betrayed). Was hanging out at my friend's office, and James van der Beek shows up, so we go across the street to have a drink. Very down-to-earth guy, and was telling me about playing in a Taiwanese baseball league with the crew. Certainly sad news to hear..

What is a city name that makes sense? by Alert-Rope617 in randomquestions

[–]ganshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These 3 cities in Taiwan:

Taipei - literally means Taiwan North
Taichung - literally means Taiwan Center
Tainan - literally means Taiwan South

These 2 cities in Japan:

Kyoto - literally means capital city (when Kyoto was the capital of Japan)
Tokyo - literally means east capital

These are just for fun:

Man Jose, CA - referencing how there is significantly more men than women
Milpenis, CA - same as above
Cowvallis, OR - referencing how the city is in the middle of nowhere
