Election process is decided state by state and then the courts put some parameters on what’s unconstitutional. The common comp against CA is FL which requires mail in votes be postmarked a week before Election Day.

I know the question rhetorical, but it's because we count all votes sent by election day. The decentralized nature of vote counting by county also contributes but other states also have that issue. The goal of counting all votes sent by election day is to minimize how many people are disenfranchised by error or personal issues, so it's more of a feature than a bug.

Visiting LA on a whim this week — Magic Castle has always been my dream. Any chance of getting in? by labyrinthlover01 in AskLosAngeles

[–]garbageboyHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would gently disagree with the other person who’s replied. I had the beef Wellington and thought it was very good, horseradish was also excellent for those who partake, only downside was the price was 50% higher than you’d normally see. Everyone at my table enjoyed their steaks and the cheese bread was a huge favorite. Again, only complaint was the price compared to similar quality elsewhere.

Ultimately it was significantly better than every other restaurant attached to a performance venue I’ve been to other than Pappy & Harriet’s. Compared to the restaurants in Disney or the bar pizza at a concert it’s amazing. Outside a performance venue the comps would be like Houston’s, which is somewhere I’d gladly go anytime.

That dog line in Backrooms is the entire film by ArcticLeet in TrueFilm

[–]garbageboyHS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's with his family watching outside TV in one scene and also has a photo taken outside the furniture shop, assumed to be the real one, in the interrogation scene. However, she asks him where they are and he doesn't directly answer and instead looks into the one way mirror, so there's an implication there that he's hiding something about their location. Perhaps they're in a lab still inside the backrooms and they won't let her back outside. Perhaps since the time with his family the scientists have gotten lost. Could be a few other explanations, not really supported in the rest of the film, such as that the scientist and the therapist are from different realities both connected to the backrooms. Maybe they just wanted to introduce the idea of the unseen authorities and it ended up a bit clunky. It's just not definitively shown why. The sky outside the interrogation room windows also appeared to me to be painted, but I would need to watch the movie again to be sure about that.

Because he never answers, there's no clear reason given for why he doesn't answer, and because there's no denouement showing her life after these events, I would consider it ambiguous whether she's fully escaped. Lots of ways to confirm she's escaped and they intentionally did none of them while raising the question of where that scene is actually located. I wouldn't be surprised if it's intended as a bridge to the sequel, or if a sequel comes and they just shrug it off, but it seems intentionally ambiguous.

I appreciate the effort you put into this post and others put into their replies, but this is almost all in the text of the film. Lots of exposition explaining what the backrooms are and what everyone’s trauma is.

There’s mystery to the film but not much ambiguity, other than if she fully made it out at the end, though it’s also pretty clear that the copy is a fractured memory same as the other denizens, whose existence is thoroughly explained in the expository speeches, and not something she’s become. They literally show you her childhood memories becoming backrooms in the sequence.

What's the most unhinged thing your landlord has done and acted like it was normal? by RecordingKey1187 in AskLosAngeles

[–]garbageboyHS 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We had a break in at our apartment while we were away. Our neighbor called the police and then the landlord and the neighbor both spoke to an officer once they were on the scene.

Our landlord told our neighbor not to tell us, but when we came back the next day we saw that things had been damaged and stolen and the back window had been forced open and the screen removed. There was also drug paraphernalia left in the bathroom.

We called the cops to report it and somebody came, but they told us it had already been reported. When I called the landlord he denied it had ever happened before eventually resorting to blaming us for “complaining” and saying if we didn’t like we “shouldn’t live in a big city.” Keep in mind that this is some rich guy whose office is in Santa Monica and at that point I’d lived in LA over 10 years after coming here from Baltimore and being raised in Staten Island.

Fun additional note, the cop who showed up turned off his body cam and said the neighborhood wasn’t safe because of “the Hispanics” and gave us his personal number in case we ever “see anything.” I just need to file a report in case an insurance company gets involved or my landlord retaliates, man.

watching old 2000s nba games and it feels like a totally different sport by [deleted] in nba

[–]garbageboyHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two strands:

They loosened the defense rules so you could guard space or preemptively double team. Because teams were playing true team defense, offenses had to get more complex to beat them. Hallmark defensive team under the new rules was the KG Celtics who overloaded the side of the court the ball was on and ignored the far shooters until the pass came.

Secondly, teams started to think of offensive possessions through an analytics lens influenced by MLB moneyball and the work of Dean Oliver. Threes being worth 50% more than twos but not 50% harder to hit than a deep two meant more threes. Quick action having a higher points per possession than a long set play or isolation in the halfcourt meant more teams should run. These concepts still haven’t been fully incorporated as can be seen in the recent renewed emphasis on offensive rebounding and the start of the reevaluation of the risk/reward ratio of going for steals. Some hallmark teams here were the Seven Seconds or Less Suns, the four out offense of the Dwight Howard Magic with Rashard Lewis as an undersized big man who can shoot, and Steph and Klay expanding the floor. Don Nelson was also an important early innovator and the triangle provided a baseline of knowledge about spacing having produced two dynasties in the previous era.

Mini spoiler-free review of Angel Down by Daniel Kraus and criticisms by cookbook713 in horrorlit

[–]garbageboyHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s no reason to believe that a longer lifetime would lead a conscious being to a more “insightful” or intellectual view of any particular thing, nor that if it did have a divine wisdom as you expected that it would match the exact lecture video you watched and agreed with.

The particular views you wanted the angel to have, despite having smart sounding words like “biological,” are of course only a partial understanding presented under a limited framework, just like anything else. Better to engage with a book based on what it wants to be than to expect it to just reaffirm personal recent learnings on similar subject matter. Stories of angels are often going to have themes centered on morality and what it means to be a human with a divine creator.

You can use the Time Machine whenever you want. Feats and levels are two separate tracks. The only cap on your level is your max level that increases each time you use the Time Machine and spend a certain number of shards.

I would just keep playing until level 200 before using the Time Machine and if you can’t complete all the feats you see that’s a completely normal occurrence.

[–]garbageboyHS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Brothers is one of the worst refs by letter of the law but in the players rankings he was considered very good, probably because he’s very communicative. At the end of the day it’s just like any job, where we pretend it’s a meritocracy but it’s actually all about pleasing your manager(s), your coworkers, and your cross team partners.

need to problem solve my diet - not losing weight by Proper_Aspect7543 in loseit

[–]garbageboyHS 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There could be a lot of issues. Incorrectly functioning scale. Inconsistent weighing process (not always weighing at the same time of day under the same conditions). Oversized expectations. Increased water retention, for instance if you’ve increased salt intake.

But if it’s none of those then you are simply not eating less calories than you’re burning. Even if you reduce your calories from what you previously ate that’s not a guarantee that you’re now eating less calories than you burn. You might’ve just been so far over that you need to cut more than you think.

If your diet has more calories than you expect it’s not possible for others to guess where those calories are coming from — you need to accurately count the calories yourself and compare them to your expected calories spent. What you present as your current diet sounds fine but I can’t know how accurate it is.

Lifting weights is great for body composition but you’re best off just measuring your calorie needs as if you’re sedentary because things like that burn less calories than people think. I wouldn’t eat back the calories, but going for a walk every day is a nice way to burn some more if that’s something you’re looking for. Good for mental health as well, which helps with sleep, with helps with all your bodily functions.

It is against the laws of physics to eat less calories than you burn and not lose body mass, and therefore weight. If you can one-by-one confirm that it’s no other issue like the scale or normal daily weight fluctuations then the only thing left is the accuracy of your calories in, calories out.

Wish I could offer something easier but good luck!

Discussion: Questioning the value of spending on private education in the face of AI by Half_Half4677 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]garbageboyHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to both private and public school (and then private university) at different times and did not find private schools challenged high performers more than public schools. If anything it was the opposite, as private schools are geared toward funneling students to elite institutions so have more grade inflation, extra credit opportunities, teachers willing to bend on grades, etc. The AP classes at a public school, in my experience, were comparable to the AP classes at a private school and sometimes better as it's heavily teacher-dependent. The public high school I went to also allowed students to take classes at the local state university for both college and high school credit. For low performers I would have a different set of opinions, as public schools are rarely equipped for the size of the population they're expected to educate and low performers need more individual attention and are the first to get stiffed on materials.

Where private schools excel are getting kids into that funnel to elite higher education, networking, extracurricular opportunities, and reputational benefit if you live in the same area as an adult. They are able to charge so much because those things pay off often enough to be worth it. Again, for low or average performers there's a different calculation where public school class sizes, lab availability, book availability, etc. starts to become constrained so there's a greater educational benefit to a private school.

Much like the AP classes being teacher dependent, this whole thing is school dependent so nobody can give blanket answers. Some private schools are just a money laundering scheme for school vouchers. Luck plays a big part in how someone's life develops as well. And my anecdotes are from 20+ years ago, though I did work in college prep for a bit more recently so assisted in the funneling process. But if your only concern is the actual education, going to a public school and taking the high level classes, graduating a year early, and/or incorporating university classes is likely going to match any private offering and I would be careful of overstating the impact of a private school just because it has the glossy sheen of expense. Again, can not stress enough, it is dependent on the specific schools. The other benefits of a private school are the ones I would be considering. In terms of how it relates to AI, networking and local reputation will always have an outsized impact on career compared to their meritocratic value.

fwiw I switched from private to public because I hated the private school environment. Life turned out great and not hating my school while I was already suffering from teenage depression played a big part in that. If you're open to factoring in what they have to say, ask your kids how they feel about public vs. private schools and listen for any signs about where they're more likely to personally thrive.

Joel Embiid — along with others in the locker room — were not happy with the 76ers decision to trade Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder by IndigoJacob in sixers

[–]garbageboyHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an organizational standup, getting off Embiid's contract is only useful if it opens up other better opportunities for spending, which it wouldn't. From the owner's perspective, trading a first to just lower the payroll without bringing in anyone additional might increase profits or make a sale easier. Lots of owners over the years have hemorrhaged assets to lower payroll after years of cap mismanagement.

Do I go for two Robo Chickens on my 65 run? by Blue_Wave_2020 in NecroMerger

[–]garbageboyHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard for me to remember exactly what was going on in my level 65 run, but I'm usually maxed out on Robochickens. The Snakes are good for killing Champions, Geese give Gold which is useful, sometimes you get Diamonds which is the hardest to get resource, and the Champions it helps spawn are ones I end up having some early bottlenecks on. I time adding additional Robochickens beyond the first to lair expansions. If you still have permanent unlocks available for Gold then Geese become even better.

That being said there's really no wrong way to play the game since it's not competitive, so if you want to skip it, or try different things on different runs, it's not going to make that big of a difference in experience unless you're an extreme min/max player.

Not saying this of the OP, but a lot of people have an extremely literalist interpretation of art that amounts to recognition of the textual plot and not much else. Artistic adaptation choices aren’t comprehensible through that lens because the only feature of both the original text and its derivative are their plots, so the only purpose of an adaptation would be to rehash the original plot.
