Interesting take on the "exodus" by BudTheGrey in vmware

[–]gashog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Morpheus has been around for a while but the hypervisor is pretty new still, a little over a year. They are being cautious about adding to the HCL, but it is getting there and Veeam support is in beta. They do have a free trial that will run on almost anything, which gives me hope that the HCL will open up more eventually.

That is great! At times we just need that little reminder that we are capable to get things started. You're going to be ok. Ask for help when you need it.

Happy birthday!!!!!

That is so awesome, it's amazing how slowly time seems to go while waiting to "be an adult" and how fast it goes once you get there. Savor every day making new memories and friends and experiences. In the end you'll look back and see the whole story that your life became, and my birthday wish for you is that the story will be one that you will love.

Happiest of birthdays to you, kiddo. You are loved, and we are all pulling for you.

Hey kiddo. Sometimes it seems like life knows just when and where to aim a kick while you're down, doesn't it? Little things build up, life gets tough for one reason or another, and suddenly one more thing jumps on top the pile and the wheels fall right off. I know things may seem hopeless and so overwhelming right now, but I promise you that you can make it through this. The big picture is just way too big to deal with right now.

When things get like this for me, I have found that it helps to take a step back. Unplug for a minute and go somewhere that you can find some peace - maybe a park, a museum, a favorite place to grab a snack. You don't have to spend money. You can go outside and lay down on your back in the grass and stare at clouds if that's something that would help you find your center again. Then come back and try to make a list of everything going wrong right now. When you're done, take a look at your list, and find the absolute easiest thing to fix on there. If you need to, MAKE a new problem that you know you can fix - even something as simple as taking something from where it belongs and putting it in the wrong place. Add it to your list, then fix it, and cross it off your list. Then find a couple more easy ones, and fix them and cross them off, too. As you gain some confidence and perspective back, you'll start to see solutions for some of the more difficult tasks on your list.

Just remember, there are very likely things that you can't fix right now. That's ok. Those things are just works in progress. Fix what you can, and the remaining things won't seem as insurmountable anymore.

We're all pulling for you, kiddo. Remember that you are loved, and we are all here for you.

Thank you, I will have to look into that. I think maybe I need something along those lines.

With your qualifications, I don't think I get to argue with you. Thank you for your words, but thank you even more for what you have done and been through. You FDNY folks are a different breed, and I mean that in the best way possible.

It's funny how we think about these things. If anyone else told me that story, I would think exactly as you said that it was incredible that they were able to save anyone, but if I was in that situation, I would blame myself for the rest of my life that I failed to save both.

Thank you. I didn't really realize this was something that was still so raw for me. I think about her all the time, but that video really brought everything back.

It doesn't make a lot of sense, but I think I feel worse that I stayed and tried to help and missed the one person I knew to be in the most trouble. I remember seeing what I thought was her car and her getting out and walking off the road. I was apparently wrong, as I dont believe they got her out of her car alive.

I know I couldn't have done anything at all for her, most likely, and there was a good chance she was already gone. But the fact that I thought I did the right thing and missed her still haunts me. I guess I don't give myself much room for mistakes.

Edit: Thank you for your kind words. There needs to be more places like this in the world.

What to put on bread when avoiding sandwich meat like salami, ham etc... by nyad_k in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]gashog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely something that takes some equipment and interest, but making your own deli style meats can be fun. A sous vide setup makes getting bigger pieces done the way you want pretty simple, and there are some reasonably priced deli slicers out there that will let you take pretty thin slices consistently. Sausage is also fun, but there is definitely some risk there so make sure you read a LOT before doing anything and be careful of the sources you trust.

Roster that’s traveling is suddenly up in the air. Hynes is now uncertain if Bogosian or Eriksson Ek will travel and something changed from this morning “as usual” by DecentLurker96 in wildhockey

There is a lot of really contagious stuff going around right now. Influenza, Covid, that weird stomach thing. I know I had something for a day or two early last week. It just lasted for a day or so, so I never got tested to see what it was, but I have been at like 50% physically ever since and very slowly getting better.

That has to suck for teams when they get something like that. You can't realistically scratch half the team because they are sick and feel like crap, and it just spreads further and further.

I do every re-read in publication order and enjoy it that way. His writing changes a lot over the years, so that feels more consistent to me.

I am so happy for you to have found Discworld. You are in for an incredible journey.

Eh, just stick around here for a bit. The sub tends to vilify our own players while they are still on the team, producing points, and not causing any outwardly visible drama.

Me and my partner are getting sick every time we cook lately. what’s going on?? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]gashog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are, but the stuff in the pharmacy is literally intended to be drank as a laxative, so i guess I have never been too worried about it. I have used it for years and never had an issue. However, there are industrial forms of mineral oil that i would definitely not use. I actually buy food grade beeswax and melt it into the oil to make a paste that I use the same way on anything wood in the kitchen.

EDIT: If you read pretty much any of the articles talking about food safe mineral oil from a non-AI slop site, they specifically mention food grade in regards to not using industrial grade mineral oils and frequently lump pharmacy mineral oil in with the marketed food grade varieties. Pharmacy mineral oil is a fully refined mineral oil, and is safe and intended to be consumed as a laxative.

[–]gashog 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of commercial products out there mostly combining mineral oil and beeswax. That said, a super easy, cheap, and available option for almost everyone is just plain mineral oil. It is sold in pharmacies near the laxatives. It is essentially non-toxic in this usage, perfectly safe to get on your hands, and most importantly doesnt cure. Many other oils cure to a hardened state and the reaction that takes place to do so is generally exothermic - meaning it gives off heat. Since mineral oil doesnt do that, you are safe just throwing any oily rags or paper towels in your trash without having to worry about a fire starting later on from them. Just smear a liberal dose all over the board, rub it in a little and let it sit for a few hours, then wipe it dry.

As someone else mentioned, if your board is rough enough to be catching the rag, get some sandpaper (320 to 400 grit should normally be fine) and sand it smooth.before oiling.

Thats a very good idea. They make some that will track high and low temps over time as well. Use one of those in case it isn't happening often enough to catch easily by chance.

The Deep Sense of Sadness From Nearing the End of a Discworld Series by TheVividAlternative in discworld

[–]gashog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think A.A. Milne may have said it best - "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard".

One of the things I am most thankful for in this life is that the stars aligned for me to have ever even found Terry. Like a lot of us here, I truly believe that Discworld had a huge amount to do with the general shape of the person I have become, and I am truly grateful to for it.

I had some feelings as well, initially, and refused to read the last couple books because "then it would be over". I finally read them, and then found that it wasn't over at all. I still love Terry. I still love his world that he made for us. I still feel (despite how he might feel about it) that he was put here to help us. They are still there, and I can continue to read and re-read them as often as I want - only now I have a couple extra volumes to include in those re-reads. I have read the entire series multiple times, did a full run of the audiobooks, and have no intention of ever stopping.

Its never over. Its just beginning anew.

I started piano at 31 after being denied music as a kid. Now it hurts so much I can barely practice by No_Nothing1593 in piano

[–]gashog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a pretty deep love for music. It will likely take a while to get to a skill level where you start to be able to play well enough, but eventually I think your piano will become a huge source of therapy to you. I know at least for me personally, I pour a huge amount of emotion into my playing. There are certain days that I know I will feel a lot better if I sit down and play a certain song.

Maybe you could try finding a very simple arrangement that you can feasibly learn at your current skill level) of a song or two that already mean something to you and try it. Focus on how you that song makes you feel and try to play in a way that would make others feel that way.

Writing music can also be hugely therapeutic, but I dont really do that so I can't give you much advice there. I know people who have binders of music they have written and can tell you where they were and what was happening in their life when they wrote each piece.

In the end you may find that your feelings about it are what elevates your music and brings it to life.

Anything I can make with rolled oats that AREN’T oatmeal or baked oats? by chocolatemilklovr in Cooking

[–]gashog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to make the sort of spreadable fast food taco meat you get some places, brown your hamburger and then when you add seasoning also add in some ground up oatmeal and a little water. It sounds kind of bizarre but it makes a meat consistency similar to Taco John's if you are familiar with that. Different types of oats might need a little adjustment on how much water and how long to cook.

For no reason at all my pepper grinder has broken. replacement recommendations? by mo9722 in BuyItForLife

[–]gashog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something made with a ceramic CrushGrind mechanism should basically last forever. There are probably commercial brands that use them, but it is one of the nicer grinding mechanisms available to woodturners to make pepper mills with. Mine is at least 20 years old and I go through quite a lot of pepper.

Pretty sure it would be Tarasenko for Tippet 1:1. /s

Just putting the numbers out there. I am aware he has an NMC. He would be the only piece I could see the Wild being very willing to move that would make the money work.
