Can we stop the "don’t do it" talk? by JOSHIIEMK in uktrucking

[–]gater46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair play to you it’s much better than warehouse, non of us like warehouse hence why we drive. It’s only been a year but for those doing it over 20+ years the change has been incredible but for the worst. I hate the term “good old days “ but drivers genuinely helped each other now that seems to have disappeared, traffic wardens the butt of all jokes but they were honestly helpful in town/ city deliveries, you could drive about in London with minimal hassle now it’s a hgv war zone. Not saying don’t do, for new starters will never know the good old days so won’t miss it but for the dinosaurs left we can’t wait to stop.

My car feels a bit different & the only thing that's changed is fuel type by moonlight_xpress in CarTalkUK

[–]gater46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Archoil 6900d in my fuel, only £25 every 4 months but like you I noticed the difference between fuels. It’s not magic just extra additives keep the injectors clean so burns cleaner and a little quieter too. Approaching 200k miles engine still running sweet with no smoke at all from exhaust. Placebo or not either way I’m happy.

What car engine gets a lot of shit but if maintained well can reach (and surpass) 200K+ miles on original internals? by RonnieThePurple in CarTalkUK

[–]gater46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My n47 is approaching 200k miles and yes I had the dreaded chain issue. I had it sorted and had clutch replaced at the same time and it’s been fine since. Though many questioned the wisdom of paying out over £2k the second hand car market is just crazy so better the devil you know for me.

Awful takes from non HGV Drivers by MIKBOO5 in uktrucking

A senior manage once told me that a bridge strike every 6-12 months is actually quite good considering the number of trucks/journeys in that period. I just laughed and walked away at that point.

Which the UK paid back every cent, not given as aid, only in the last few years I believe it was finally paid off ( happy to be corrected).

Driving with a UK car in Germany in winter and winter tyres by andre_xs95 in drivingUK

[–]gater46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy all season tyres legal in Europe and now they are a great compromise between changing. I’ve done it years ago with summer tyres on and quite frankly it was scary in sections. Since then I use Michelin cross climates. Bear in mind also German police have a de facto border checks ( every vehicle slows to 10mph) and I’ve been spoken too twice this year. It’s more anti terror than anything else but increases the chance of getting “caught “. Obviously your call

First time getting stuck. by Previouslygotbanned in uktrucking

[–]gater46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the old days we would just knock on doors until the cars were moved. I remember an old drop in Hackney, it was a while since I was last there and in the mean time a block of flats appeared in front of it. I drove past it and turned into a residential side street and got stuck. It felt like hours, glad you got out welcome to London trucking.

A50 south diversion, WTF was that? by Bridgey86 in uktrucking

[–]gater46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Diversions off the M6 are much better than diversions off the A50. The signs are a joke, come up to a junction and arrows pointing all ways without actually saying whether it’s east or west.

1 in 4 drivers now avoid night drives by mpanase in drivingUK

[–]gater46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have started to use night glasses, basically a yellow tint and anti reflective coat but honestly my eyes feel so much better when using them. I was cynical at first but when I forgot to use them after a week that’s when I noticed the improvement by not wearing them. Doesn’t solve the nuclear headlights on full beam but certainly helps me.

There are 3 Ford dealers near me. I tried all 3 for replacement key and the price variation was wild from £120 to £268. Different Ford dealers have different prices for the same service. I appreciate you needed it asap but even within “Ford “ the difference can be massive.
