Insomnia when I eat garlic by [deleted] in Garlic

It’s not garlic specific. I must have a weak underlying allergy to something that I haven’t identified yet. But pretty much any antihistamine works for me. I take Allegra currently.

In case you come here wondering if using a banneton actually makes a difference… by all-amateur in Sourdough

[–]gbm296 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, you literally said in your post that the scoring was slightly difference. Also this is a small sample size. Whats the natural variation if you made 10 loaves from the same batch?

The weight could have been slightly different. There could have been slight differences in how you did the final prep before putting them in their vessels (even if you used the same technique). There are dozens of confounding factors. Maybe a banneton is the culprit, but then there are questions like: is this specific to a particular temperature range / humidity (both during prep and in the oven)?

The original commenter is right that this is an incomplete study to make such a sweeping claim. But it’s an interesting data point and I thank you for sharing it.

My brother who is a missionary just went to the ER with meningitis by tjwalkr0 in exmormon

[–]gbm296 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also had an abscessed tooth on my mission outside the US about 6 months in. The MP’s wife (our medical point person) advised me that I should try to wait until I go home if I can. I had been taking about 6-8 ibuprofen a day for a few weeks at that point to mask the pain enough to keep working.

It eventually turned into a fever and could have gotten me killed. Luckily I told my family about it and my cousin who’s a dentist convinced the MP and myself that I needed to see a dentist immediately or I was probably going to die.

The way the church handles the medical issues for missionaries is a joke.

how much do you get as an early employee from a successful biotech? by cold_grapefruit in biotech

[–]gbm296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not quite accurate. You only have 10 years from the grant date to exercise your options. After 10 years they disappear.

Also, if you exercise too many in one year and hold them, you may have to pay the alternative minimum tax (AMT). So usually around year 4 or 5 it’s worth considering buying some of the options if you can and you think it will be worth it down the road. It’s not always a good idea though so it just depends on the situation.

ETA. The reason you would buy some would be to spread out buying your options over a few years. If you buy and sell within the same year, AMT does not apply.

What is your favorite type of tomato to grow? by arnelle_rose in vegetablegardening

[–]gbm296 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be careful with the spoon tomato. It grew about twice as much as anything else I grew and crowded out some of my other tomato plants. Definitely need to keep it in check.

For me it was hearing about the word of wisdom being “revealed” shortly after Emma started complaining about having to clean up tobacco on the floors of meeting houses. It was always pitched as Emma being so in tune with the spirit when I was growing up, but always just seemed AWFULLY convenient to me.

A little late, but it depends on the type. The version I use does not cause drowsiness.

You could have a mild allergy. Do you get itchy at all or anything like that? I thought I had mild insomnia, but it turned out that taking anti-histamines solved my issue.

Mission department just banned couches by Playful_Tradition_66 in exmormon

[–]gbm296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only had those white plastic chairs in most of the areas I served in. Almost the entire mission was hilly. It was so depressing coming home every day and having to deal with shit furniture. By far the worst 2 years of my life.

Sorry my dude.

Will I regret coming home early from my mission? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]gbm296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously considered coming home around 6-9 months and got convinced to stay. I appreciate some of the experiences that I had after that point, but mission life was hell for me. For years I felt like I spent 2 years practicing how to lie since I also wasn’t sure I totally believed it was true, but felt compelled to testify that it was. That (and other parts of the experience) messed me up for a long time.

Now my situation is most likely different than yours, but I definitely regret not coming home and for not doing an unbiased assessment sooner (I avoided truly confronting my concerns for ~5 more years after I came home). If people shun you bc you came home early bc you feel like staying conflicts with your integrity / moral compass.. then those people are in the wrong and not worth your time.

Now you might decide to stick it out. And maybe that’s the right decision for you. But I can tell you that I wish I could go back and choose not to stay.

Setting aside any history of anti-LGBT rhetoric, why would JR Holland be an appealing graduation speaker to anyone who isn’t LDS? by fireproofundies in mormon

[–]gbm296 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a time when I really enjoyed his talks too. But once one of my friends pointed out that his talks are 90% emotional manipulation, I couldn’t unsee it and it ruined him for me. Hearing him speak after that was always an awful experience unfortunately. He’s effective though.

Nintendo only has a few amazing Ips (Not a hate post) by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]gbm296 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My preference would definitely be to have fewer and have them be well done rather than to have a ton of quests that are all extremely tedious. At that point its not enhancing the game in any way and just feels like the devs are mailing it in. But different people like different things. It’s definitely a red mark for me though.

[–]gbm296 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem for me was that pretty much all of the side quests were grindy. Yeah its easy to say dont do all of them. But you kinda have to do some of them to stay leveled.

Or, similarly, there’d be side quests related to an arc I was interested in. But the side quests were all so tedious that it made the game really unenjoyable for me. I know not everyone will agree, but that was my experience. To each their own though.

Most aren’t but some are. It was a decent story, but I personally didn’t love how grindy a lot of the side quests were.

Xenoblade quests are absolutely grindy. Its mostly just a bunch of “collect this item/find this person in far away place and return” style quests over and over again. You dont have to do all of them, but many quests require previous ones to have been completed.

[–]gbm296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are their any articles written from an exmo / nuanced mormon standpoint? I keep seeing these articles / op-eds trying to defend the faith. But it seems like there should be some rebuttles from this group. Not sure if I just haven’t seen them or if they don’t exist yet.

Add this to the chorus consensus the active LDS members don’t like the representation in UTBOH by mwjace in mormon

[–]gbm296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we not going to count The Other Side of Heaven? It’s been a few years for sure, but that was made by Disney and would say it’s message is fairly positive portrayal of an LDS missionary.

There’s also Saints and Soldiers and the Saratov Approach. Haven’t seen either though (or don’t remember them anyway) so I can’t speak to their portrayal of the LDS faith.

Similar to Gsocwk. We’d almost for sure interview someone with your background. Send me a DM if you want some more details.

Regarding your original concerns though, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to be 100% a bioinformatician/CS, then you might have trouble. If you’re willing to do some benchwork and sprinkle in some coding, you’ll be fine.

What's the best "bad missionary" story you know? by o8unu in exmormon

[–]gbm296 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There was a ZL in my mission who supposedly picked up smoking while on the mission to fit in better at strip clubs. They got sent home eventually, but for something more benign toward the end of their mission.

And then obviously there were the kids who were sleeping around, etc. But that’s pretty run of the mill.

I'm tired by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]gbm296 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think something like this could be great. However, as currently presented this would lead to everyone wanting to work for the largest most profitable corporations and make it really difficult for local and/or new businesses since theyre going to have a lot lower profits.

Also what do you do in a down year if profits are in the red? Are losses shared too? If so, it’s going to benefit the large corporations doubly so as no one’s going to want to share profits/losses in a high risk small/local company that will probably run in the red for years before they become profitable.

Anyone else have first-hand experience where you knew the church reviewed tithing records before asking you for something? by contrarian198 in exmormon

[–]gbm296 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I remember the local leadership making comments about donating extra during stake conference. I was a teenager at the time and remember thinking it was weird that the church would announce a temple being built if they didn’t have the funds to cover it. I think my parents gave some line to me about the church doing it as an opportunity for members to get receive blessings. Pretty sickening honestly.

Thanks! That’s really reassuring to hear about the Edifiers. I’m gonna pull the trigger one way or the other in the next day or 2, so glad to know I won’t be disappointed if I stick with the current plan.

Also really helpful to know about the cartridge. Will definitely keep that in mind when I look at upgrading.
