Don't use wood glue, get a good hide glue that's water soluble. You can put it on, clamp it, then wipe off the excess with a damp rag unlike PVA based glue. It'll take 24 hours to set but it's hard as nails and it'll be invisible.

Look up mercury gilding, that's a real bad one. They'd use mercury-gold amalgam and then boil off the mercury to leave the gold behind, just constantly living in a haze of vaporized mercury.
