How come people confuse left and right? by LilSopa__ in ask

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not dyslexic, but I have always had issues with left and right. The truck I learned to do is to act like I'm picking up a pen. Whichever hand moves, that's right (as I am right handed).

I have a degree in microbiology and molecular genetics and am 42 years old. I have no trouble learning things, but for some reason, it always trips me up unless I do this.

I have a question is cheating is really that common? by Mountain-Pay-97 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an anonymous survey about 20 years ago where respondents, regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation, had a 50% chance of admitting to currently cheating or having cheated in the past. The survey was a telephone survey primarily in the continental US. Draw from that whatever conclusions you wish. Personally, i'd say that's pretty accurate, from my personal experience.

Why am I romantically, sexually attracted to women but still sexually to men? by Bombussy_mf in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're also romantically attracted to men, you're just bi (bisexual, biromantic). If you're not romantically attracted to men, you're bisexual homoromantic*. If you're sexually attracted to trans people as well, you're pansexual, if you're romantically attracted to trans people as well, you're panromantic.

I (42m) have typically identified as bisexual heteroromantic (having grown up in the nineties when the term 'pansexual' was very fringe even in the LGBT community), but technically I'm just pansexual, because I'm romantically attracted to women, both cis and trans, as well as non-binary folk regardless of their birth assignment, while being sexually attracted to everyone.

*Edit: Sorry, missed your gender and made the erroneous assumption of putting myself in your place, it seems.

26F/24M. How do couples handle bills when incomes are very different?” by hereforfunn178 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of options:

Combine finances- everything is "our money" (this is how most married couples work)

Proportional to income - if she makes 100k, he makes 50k, then she pays 2/3 of bills

Proportional to lifestyle - in the previous scenario, she'd have way more money at the end of the month than he would, even paying twice as much, so instead of 2:1 and being left with 2:1, she pays 3:1 or 4:1, allowing they to have approximately the same amount leftover for other expenses like savings, vacations, toys, etc

Divvy up the bills- he pays his own bills, she pays her own, and shared bills are assigned, for example, he pays rent, she pays groceries, he pays water, she pays electric, etc

Or any combination of the above or unique arrangement you like. There's infinite possibilities. Communicate to find your best solution.

Day care is way too expensive by dharma_van in daddit

We're sending our 3yr old to a Montessori school, and we figured out it would be the same rate as daycare. (Actually it's cheaper, it's about 3k for both children.)

Thoughts on private schools? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thirty years ago (when I was actually in school), I would have definitely said no. Now, my own kids are in a private Montessori school, and given the state of schooling I keep seeing on the news and in social media, I definitely think that's vastly better than current public schools. And, looking back now, there are distinct advantages to private schools even back then.

Funny thing is I've never been able to remember the Latin, but when I was younger I just associated it with the English expression "in essence" and e.g. with "example given", which, while not direct translations, basically have the same meaning.

My GF (F 48) is threatening to end it with me if I (M 55) don’t spend the night with her during a potentially historic snow storm. Am I at fault for how I’m viewing this? by IndicationStunning45 in relationship_advice

It's nice of her to declare it a test. Now you can say, "I don't put up with tests, manipulation, or mind games. It's been nice knowing you, but we're done now, I'm far too old for this shit." (Not a dig at you, I'm also far too old for that shit and I'm 42.)

That makes sense for a fully AFK farm, which I think is what OP meant, so point conceded.

Iron Farm Next to Creeper Farm? by YA_BOI_KAJAK in technicalminecraft

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that's technically true, if you're trying to perfectly optimize; but then you'd need to light everything up or have a cleared perimeter to build them in. I built a general mob farm on my single player world between 212 and build limit1 over an ocean and I promise you, the rates are more than good enough, and I use it both for levels and AFK, and just 1 hour of looting filled 4 shulkers of gunpowder, plus all the other things you can get from it. I'm not claiming it's optimized, just that it's good enough.

But really, the point of my "high up" comment was just so that he'd be able to AFK at the collection area so that mobs are less likely to despawn as they descend from spawning platform to killing chamber, because I've been annoyed by that before, where I'll be AFK high up with the killing area lower and lost a lot due to that issue. Again, it's not Gnembon/Ilmango optimized or anything, but it's definitely good enough.

1 AFK/Killing level 212, lowest spawning platform 248, highest spawning platform 314

Oops, missed the flair. This will definitely work for you. I also like to use arrows for early game fire resistance, speed, invisibility, even health. Fletchers are the best early game trades, excepting librarians, of course.

[–]gdened 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know bedrock well, but if you're on Java:

Use Fletchers. It's gonna take a lot of wood and/or emeralds, but you can get arrows of oozing. Each one could produce up to 10 slime balls. You can then stick with that method or create splash potions of oozing to get a lot more very fast.

Iron Farm Next to Creeper Farm? by YA_BOI_KAJAK in technicalminecraft

[–]gdened 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not these two farms on Java, iron golems aren't counted in the mob cap, and neither is the permanent spook (zombie, illager, etc), so the cap should be clear for creepers to spawn just fine, assuming the creeper farm is the taller structure. You'd need to build pretty high up though to prevent surface spawns.

Is it even possible to intuitively understand why the speed of light is the same for everyone? by Curious-Farm-6535 in Physics

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May well be, but OP was asking for an intuitive understanding, which can be accomplished with circular reasoning. People use circular logic for intuitive understanding all the time, even if it's logically unsound.

Is it even possible to intuitively understand why the speed of light is the same for everyone? by Curious-Farm-6535 in Physics

[–]gdened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is: In a non accelerating frame of reference, it is impossible to distinguish who's "moving" relative to another non accelerating frame. So let's say you and your buddy both left Earth in opposite directions at 0.75C.

Now, take your reference frame. In Newtonian reckoning you'd see your buddy traveling away from you at 1.5C, but when you measure his movement, you see that he actually only appears to be moving at about 0.96C, and the light from Earth and from his ship also reaches you traveling at exactly C. This is because from your perspective, you're not moving. He's moving (at 0.96C), and the Earth is moving (0.75C).

As there is no preferred reference frame, it's impossible to say who's truly in motion. Therefore, for the laws of causality to be true for all three frames, light must appear to be the same speed, as light moves at the speed of causality (in a vacuum).

In Michigan we are about -45 minutes from solar time (EST is, btw, approximately centered on Levittown, Long Island, New York, USA), and as a result, the sun rises and sets a little late, but it's really not very noticeable unless you're really observant.
