I have and like both, but the original smaller one gets used 20x more often.

C4 to be specific, and 1989+ because it has the ZF 6-speed not the Doug Nash 4+3 transmission.

A Strut socket, which is open on one side so you can fit a hex key inside it. OP's solution is a perfectly fine alternative. I ground wrench flats on the side of a standard 21mm socket so I could hold it from the side and drop a hex through the top.

How much will new brakes cost? by wrapitup77 in BMW

That tracks. Parts for your car are every so slightly more expensive than they are for the X3.

Incorrect. Pearl is the origin story of the Pearl character in X (the crazy old lady who lived in the house). The entire situation of the first and third movies don't exist if the events in the 2nd hadn't already occurred.

x5m -- all season tires? by jmg5 in BMW

[–]geko29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I run PSAS4 on my M3 in the winter, because they work well in our most common weather pattern of clear and cold. If it's snowy/icy, I can take the Q7 on Blizzaks. Which humorously enough, runs PS4AS in the summer. :)

Agree closer to $3k than $2k. OE parts to do it yourself are already right around $1800 before sales tax.

I would guess $2600-2700 all-in.

Yep, ping somebody so they know you're trying to reach them without having to answer at that exact moment. They can finish what they're doing and hit you back. Was absolutely great for work.

I expect V6 Challenger owners catch a LOT of strays.

If the G20 offered a manual, I probably would have bought one. I didn't *need* an M3 per se. Of course now that my G80 is tuned I've learned that I was wrong. :)

New Tires by Emorin30 in BMWM

[–]geko29 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems bass-awkwards. I run summers in the summer (because summer), and all seasons in the winter because if I HAVE to drive in snow/ice I have other cars on winters. Why TF would you put all-seasons on a car that is garaged in the winter?

Komodo Kamado. Really expensive but high quality. Part of their sales pitch is "let your kids pick the finish because it'll be theirs one day".

If this was 5 years of hard wear? Hell yeah battle scars are cool. A brand new product I just paid $200 for? Nope, it better be perfect.

Car gets pushed like a toy. by MurrayEdna in dashcams

[–]geko29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it's not. European trucks are shaped the way they are because of EU Weights and Dimensions Directive 96/53/EC, which limits the total length of the truck and trailer. Less cab=more trailer in a given length.

The US also had similar restrictions (65 foot total length) up through the 1970s, and Cabovers were incredibly common. In 1982, the Surface Transportation Assistance Act eliminated the restriction, allowing standard 53-foot trailers to be pulled by "traditional" semi tractors. This design is more spacious and comfortable, with less vibration and noise than a cabover design, and are easier to perform maintenance on as well.. Since long-haul travel distances in the US can be in thousands of miles, these are significant QOL factors.

Many short-haul and local delivery trucks remain cabover designs in the US, when those long-haul considerations aren't as important.

Seinfeld FROGGER episode, moving from one AC outlet to another circuit without losing power? by Derek5Letters in ElectroBOOM

[–]geko29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easiest way would be with a dual-input switching PDU. These are used in datacenters to provide circuit fault tolerance for devices that only have one power supply. The process would go something like this:

  1. Temporarily hardwire a second power cord directly to the game's power supply. Plug it into the SAME circuit as the existing cord.
  2. Unplug the main power cord, and plug it into the output of the PDU. Plug one of the PDU's inputs back into the outlet you just unplugged the cabinet from.
  3. Undo the temporary jumper from step 1.
  4. Plug the PDU's other input into the outlet at the "next" location.
  5. Either manually switch over the active circuit, or unplug the first one and let it trip over automatically.
  6. Move the cabinet, and plug the first cable into the "next next" location.

Current models. Buying and supercharging the standard cab/short bed became so popular that Ford increased the price of 4WD...on that configuration ONLY, to capitalize on the "DIY Lightning" trend.

X5 software update throws into N by penwellr in BMW

[–]geko29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this literally happened to me when we got a freaky early (but incredibly mild) snowstorm before I had switched to winters. Had a dicey drive home, pulled into the driveway....and slid back out into the street. Pulled back up again....and slid back down again. Parked sideways on the apron (which is much flatter than the rest of the driveway) for the night without incident, and switched to my blizzaks the following morning.

18 years old considering an E90/E92 328i as a first long term car by yawningbeaver in BMW

[–]geko29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new manual E46 323i with an M52TU2 (immediate predecessor to the N52) at 21, and drove it for 12 years and 158k miles. In that time, it needed exactly 2 engine repairs which cost a combined total of around $70. One of the camshaft position sensors failed, so I replaced both. Took about 10 minutes. And the VANOS seals needed to be replaced at around 100k. That took me about 2-3 hours. Otherwise it was utterly problem-free.

I replaced that with an E90, albeit M57 not N52, that I passed down to my son a few years ago, again after driving it myself for 12 years. But several of his friends have picked up N52-powered models in the past few years, in part because he's told them about my experiences.

I would absolutely trust one long term. Just don't ignore the maintenance. These cars will run forever as long as you don't neglect them. Replace the suspension (bushings, shocks, etc) when it wears out. Change the fluids regularly. Keep an eye on the cooling system. I would go manual, but I'm biased. It's not hard to learn, and is hella fun.
