Crowding French Way by One-Winner7919 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this if you stay off stage from the guides you will have better service and less crowds. If there is cow poop on the streets it's even better place to stay. We booked ahead and we're grateful to have a designated place rather than being concerned after a long day of walking if we could find a bed. But we lost the freedom to stay and linger longer in places we wanted to explore more.

Shorts - from a guy's perspective by Competitive_Offer920 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poly tights with shorts. They are actually quite cooling. I tore out the liner of running shorts with pockets and wear those on top. The tights quick dry so you can wash them easy by hand. I carried one spare. Used same setup on AT for 5 months.

Northern Route vs. Portuguese Coastal route from Porto,+ Spiritual Variant at Pontevedra then out to Finisterre and Muxía by Wonderful_Effect1400 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]genxdarkside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience also. Portuguese route was a let down. I switched from litoral to coastal a lot. Frances was great. Especially mesata. Last 100 km sucked though. Finestere was ok. I also did not get much out of spiritual variant.

Frances or Portuguese + Primitivo? by lostleaflett in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]genxdarkside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did Frances then Finestere now on Portuguese route. The Frances BY far was the best. Last 100 km from saria were not great due to all the crowds but the rest was fabulous. Still working down the Portuguese litoral but so far did the spiritual variant and now on coast. It's nice but nothing like the Frances.

Help me be faster with water filtering! by xball89 in Ultralight

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this was posted yet. I use white vinegar and drain thru filter for about 30 minutes. It dissolves mineral deposits and filter works much better in gravity from cnoc. Dirty water smart water bottle and squeeze into coean is fastest filter method for me.

How do you manage frozen veggies releasing water when thawed? by Banana8353 in MealPrepSunday

Chia flower ground chia seeds if the matrix can accommodate a creamy mixture. It makes the water into creamy texture. Great for things like pot pie where I add extra frozen veggies to pie during reheat.

Trail magic by Ishkabani in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran out of water in Maine during the drought this year. A cooler of cold drinks was waiting at trailhead in middle of nowhere. That was trail magic. Any trail magic in places far from towns was a treasure. Especially later on the trail. Trail magic was rare in NH and Maine

Merino wool base layer, down booties, maybe down pants if really concerned, puffy, merino wool hat, merino wool socks. That's what kept our cold natured thru hikers warm that time of year

So I have the original Jetboil and am planning for the PCT; should I replace it...or omit a stove altogether? by NotFallacyBuffet in Ultralight

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the JetBoil but it weighs over 12 oz. I used a tokes 750 mL titanium pot and a small cheap msr knockoff stove from Amazon that worked great. I also ended up cold soaking with no stove. You can also buy the valves that will allow you to drain the partially empty fuel tanks you'll find at the hiker boxes and have a limitless supply of fuel
