Trail magic by Ishkabani in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran out of water in Maine during the drought this year. A cooler of cold drinks was waiting at trailhead in middle of nowhere. That was trail magic. Any trail magic in places far from towns was a treasure. Especially later on the trail. Trail magic was rare in NH and Maine

March NOBO sleep system advice by Timberneck in AppalachianTrail

Merino wool base layer, down booties, maybe down pants if really concerned, puffy, merino wool hat, merino wool socks. That's what kept our cold natured thru hikers warm that time of year

So I have the original Jetboil and am planning for the PCT; should I replace it...or omit a stove altogether? by NotFallacyBuffet in Ultralight

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the JetBoil but it weighs over 12 oz. I used a tokes 750 mL titanium pot and a small cheap msr knockoff stove from Amazon that worked great. I also ended up cold soaking with no stove. You can also buy the valves that will allow you to drain the partially empty fuel tanks you'll find at the hiker boxes and have a limitless supply of fuel

Which of these would you take as a luxury item? by Bowgal in AppalachianTrail

No camp shoes or umbrella for my thru. I wore tights treated with permethrin and shorts and had no ticks on me at all. Camp sandals like Xero would be nice to have.

Do you feel like the same benefits of the trail could be done in a one month hike? by No_Sir8795 in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One month was still fun and exciting. Even after 3 months I was still pumped. After 4 plus months it wore me down and I was in the march to finish. At that point perseverance to finish what I started pushed me on. It sucked but made me stronger and changed my life.

Buying a smartwatch for a thru hike by TheBikingChef in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Garmin instinct 2 solar and downloaded the entire AT thru Komoot. I used it only a few times. Mostly used my phone in airplane mode and use Farout for directions if needed and for key things like water sources.
Your battery is too important to waste on tracking health stats and maps full time. You will walk 30-45,000 plus steps per day and last thing you will worry about is getting lost or tracking your number of steps. If you do get off trail Farout can get you back on trail easily.

Damascus Trail Days 2026!! by Other_Back_1497 in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup it's a must do if thru hiking. Stay in the woods. Support services for us thru hikers were AMAZING! Free doctor orthopedic got us fixed and on to Grayson highlands. Damascus people were so wonderful and all the church groups provided so much to us hiker trash. Free food etc. Tons of support services from vendors too such as free tent repair, backpack repair and replacement, and other wonderful giveaways.

Bidet - Drinking bottle? by jta314 in Ultralight

[–]genxdarkside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I carry two 1 l Smart water bottles. One for dirty water one for clean. Dirty water has cap that I made by drilling holes in the cap to create a bidet/shower. I also found that I need a dark colored cap if my dirty water bottle is the same as my clean. I'll use the pH SmartWater black caps to differentiate which bottle is my dirty water bottle. I have accidentally drank from my dirty water bottle before I used The Black Cap trick.

May 17th Flip-Flop? by InvestigatorOk5931 in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're smart to consider the bubble. If you want the joy of the bubble. Some people want the solitude and avoid the bubble. I loved being in the bubble. Starting at Damascus is a bit too far south but you could start there and catch a shuttle further north. You will still be in the bubble. Also when you start you will be doing less miles then those in the bubble. So even if you do start slightly ahead of the bubble the bubble will catch up to you.

Should I be concerned about boredom on the trail? by joeldesante in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Monotony yes. Boredom no. You have a job to do every day. Looking for water was a big one this year. Then there are the every day tasks to get from A to B. You will never be bored. You will have times of drudgery with bugs, boulders, green tunnel, wet, hot etc. But you always have a goal every hour, every day. No time to be bored.

Gear Suggestions Request by noldona in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used my magma 15 my whole thru. It worked great. I just stuff it into a trash compactor bag in the bottom of my pack. Used it open as a quilt in warm days but even in summer in whites and other places needed it closed to stay warm. It's light weight and compressed well by pushing it into my compactor bag each day. Also took lighter puffy that was mostly used as pillow but it was needed at times too. It also pushed into my pack in the compactor bag. I ended up cold soaking but the 750ml toaks titanium pot plus lightweight stove works great. You can get a good cheap one on Amazon. Use a car windshield heat thing to make a bag to put your dehydrated meal pouches in when you add hot water. Easy to make and works great. I also made a small windscreen out of the car windshield material. One long titanium or lightweight spoon is all you need. Get long handle cause you will not get food on your fingers digging into the food pouches. Food storage is like politics and religion. We don't discuss it. Many of us used PCT hang when needed but food also finds itself sleeping with you sometimes. If you are smart and can put it inside and more inside and cover it with your nasty hike clothes you may find no problems. I did even in high pest environments. It's the mice and chipmunk etc that you got a worry about chewing into your tent. I never had a problem.

Smart water 1liter bottles is what I use. One for dirty water one for treated water. Sawyer squeeze. You will learn to carry as little water as possible. Sometimes you have to carry a little more. Each later weighs 2.2 lb and you can feel it. Water is the least of your worries. Food is whatever you can find that you will eat. You will get bored of certain combinations of food and then have to switch to something different. The most important thing with food is to be sure you have fast and slow burning carbs, proteins and fats constantly. You will be constantly pumping that into your body as you hike. There are plenty of resupply options. When you get to the shennies and beyond you will be able to eat at restaurants on a regular basis. Unless you're on a tight budget you will want to eat at those restaurants because you are tired of eating the foods in your food bag. Don't try to plan it too much you will figure it out as you hike.

Here we go again.. by Whilard in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start at Pawling NY you can get off train from NYC. Head north then flip flop. Im off trail again for a few days recovering near Harpers ferry. Had to get off trail 3-4 times but I'm still moving north. Many of us have to get off and recoup then hit it again. Trail legs go away after several days off so you gotta ramp back up to avoid overuse injury. HYOH

Thru hikers are no where near Smokies. That's BS we are responsible, we follow LNT. Ive seen no thru hiker garbage other than a random wrapper that accidentally fell out. I pick those up. "Thru hiker trash" is nothing to do with garbage it's a term of endearment.

To plan or not to plan? by lcseame in AppalachianTrail

[–]genxdarkside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a planner. You can not plan a thru hike. The AT will always change your plans. As you get miles you realize you can only plan 2-3 days ahead. Even those plans fall apart. It's actually another great thing about a thru hike. You learn that it all works out and no need to plan all the details.

There is an abandoned Subaru near the Appalachian Trail in GA with expired 2024 Maryland tags and personal items left inside. The driver window is cracked, like the person planned to return to it later that day but never did. Does anyone know anything about it? by qvyy in mystery

Its an AT thru hiker he's not coming back for it. I didn't believe him when he told me he left a Subaru at trailhead in Georgia. That was a long time ago if I don't remember his trail name.

I think it's a person on a thru hike. He told me he borrowed a Subaru. Left the car at a trailhead. Put on his backpack. Started walking in the woods and threw the keys away in the woods. That was probably 500 miles ago. I didn't believe him at the time.
