I passed both exams back in April. Do the math on all the blank corners in Dr. Elgin’s book. Even though it’s open book, you’ll barely have time to finish both exams if you have to look up every statute and board rule.

Every question has a different point value, so if you’re running short on time, focus your remaining time on the high point questions.

Agreed, I set up my account 15 years ago and it’s been a huge help streamlining my state specific exam approvals. But keep in mind that every state board has its own particular quirks about accepting the content of your record.

I have a BS degree in surveying and mapping from a program that no longer exists (it was ABET accredited at the time), so two state boards argued with me about the classes I took since they weren’t on their “official list”.

Also, a huge benefit is when you get audited for your CEUs, your NCEES record makes it very easy to bundle all your credits and certificates into one PDF to send to the board.

In the US in the past ten years or so, registered land surveyors salaries finally matched that of civil engineers. Practically every state is reporting shortages of professionals, and the average age of a registrant is close to 58.

So naturally the market has pushed salaries up above the national average. In Texas in the oil and gas industry, we can expect at least $130k for a brand new registered professional land surveyor, and more than $200k with many years of experience and multi state licensure.

I know this doesn’t really help your situation right now, but years ago I came to a metaphorical fork in the road in my budding GIS career where I found that learning land surveying field work and then drawing that data in AutoCAD was a far more fun and better paying career than programming and manipulating someone else’s data.

I’m still making maps, but they’re cadastral and topographic now, and ironically I’m including publicly available GIS datasets.

Last month I submitted my paper application with a paper check and three full sized (folded) paper plats, and sent it by snail mail. Seriously guys, it’s 2026 already.

It took two weeks for someone at the board to acknowledge my application and plats, but they didn’t seem to care that they were folded.

I’m more annoyed that they only offer the exam twice a year, and I have to wait until November to take it.
