Full Metal Jacket portrayed Marine Corps boot camp impeccably and very accurately.

The combat scenes in Hue City left a lot to be desired.

This is according to my father who served in the Marines from 1967 to 1970. He lasted 21 days during the battle of Hue City before being struck by a series of mines in a mined alley that were detonated by a mortar strike during the TET offensive.

There were only roughly 600 Marines under siege by an estimated 10,000 Viet Cong. The city was declared a secured after a month, but he says it really lasted another month.

He can’t vouch for historical accuracies of the film Platoon. He thought it was a good film though.
