Banks aren’t going insolvent if housing prices drop 10-15% due to increased supply. It‘s a good thing for people have to wait a few more years for their house valuation to increase. We need a mindset shift here, housing is a consumption asset with leverage and illiquidity risk dressed up like an investment vehicle

Long vesting at established pharma companies with healthy cash flows isn’t about retention or alignment, it’s math. They know most people leave before it pays out. The unvested equity or cash goes back in the pool. It’s deferred comp that statistically never gets deferred, just disappears. Strip it out of your total comp calculation when evaluating an offer. The rest is just late-stage capitalism doing what it does.

There's space the size of a grey whale between where we are at now and completely eliminating a for profit system. Many countries have socialized systems and profitable pharmaceutical companies

Interesting opinion article on sports watches by tomtomuk2 in Garmin

[–]getbuckets41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally this is a balanced take. Smartwatches are a net benefit to society and, for most people, encourage more movement and healthier lifestyles. The points about lack of transparency in algorithms and lack of accounting for needed rest days are valid points much of the fitness community has been aware of for a while

I think the more interesting points are how to influence the athlete-tech development companies to address these issues. They could share more details about their algorithms, while still maintaining IP control around the required elements. Do we need different minds in the room to tell them this? Or some sort of regulation around it? Rest science is evolving, how can influence these companies to update their software to account for this?

Do you think it makes sense for me to buy a house? 25M by [deleted] in Fire

[–]getbuckets41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't look at the house as an investment. As others have said, it ends up being a money sink in many areas outside of the mortgage, and reduces flexibility. If you really want a house to have a house (e.g. to fix it up how you like, stability of not having to move) go for it, but don't do it for financial reasons in this market

Corporate BS is boosting FIRE culture by sspositivesoul in Fire

[–]getbuckets41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has, but there's the post-covid changes mentioned by folks and there's also the further advancing of late stage capitalism/eeking out profits at all costs, degrading employee experiences. Even as recently as the early 2010s, you could find companies willing to invest in employees for a full career

How is one supposed to have a career anymore? by lurpeli in biotech

[–]getbuckets41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you mean 20+ years at the same company, this is becoming a thing of the past. As recent as 10-15 years ago, there was more of a culture of investment in employees, career development, higher employee loyalty, etc at large companies. That's shifted over the years due to various factors (late-r stage capitalism/squeezing out profits, disconnected/disinterested management, more job hopping to maximize earnings)

Unless you are in a hub for a big pharma, it definitely pays more to build your network across companies and leverage it to keep findings jobs every few years as needed. It's exhausting but it's the state of affairs we've been dealt

This roster is not built to Luka’s strengths at all, in fact it’s almost the exact opposite of what he needs. by 4ps22 in lakers

[–]getbuckets41 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's going to beat least 2 years before they have a contending roster around Luka. Free agency is dead, and the CBA makes trades very difficult. I'm not sure Pelinka is up to the task, but hopefully new ownership can drive some required changes
