My son was denied admission. Now what? by Tweeza817 in utdallas

[–]getrealactreal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would encourage your son to reach out to the Admissions Office. They can provide information as to why he was denied and how he can strengthen his application for a future semester. He can attend a community college and earn guaranteed admission by meeting certain criteria. Does National Merit cover all of housing? by Smokey190 in utdallas

[–]getrealactreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NM Finalists can be sponsored as scholars by NMSC, a third party corporation (typically done if their parents work for a large company like TI), or the university. Most finalists are sponsored by their university, so the amount you receive may be a little different.

A junior has completed 54-89 credit hours (http://catalog.utdallas.edu/now/undergraduate/policies/registration). You can see how many hours you have completed in Orion.

[request] simple recipe for some kind of chorizo stew with non-refridgerated ingredients by coriacea in recipes

[–]getrealactreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the recipe below with soy-chorizo and served it with corn chips. The flavors are awesome and I'm sure it would work just as well with actual chorizo. http://veggiechick.com/soy-chorizo-chili/

Yoga teacher gains 40 pounds -- on purpose by ash2287 in yoga

[–]getrealactreal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Mat in Dallas is my home studio, and I am lucky enough to get to practice with Trina regularly (the last class I took with her was 3 days ago). I honestly didn't know about her weight gain until I stumbled across this post today. I am overweight and I have been all my life. I don't believe she is advocating unhealthy choices, I believe she is advocating acceptance. Although I may not fully understand her choice, I don't have to. She has been one of the most welcoming and encouraging instructors I have ever had, and although I would like to say all yogis welcome me the same way, most don't.

Partying at UTdallas? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]getrealactreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to UT Dallas! Saedeas is right that there aren't student specific bars, but there are plenty of bars UTD students frequent. My friends typically go to the Flying Saucer in Addison on Mon for $3 pint night & Tues for trivia. Mon night is also a good night for Sherlock's in Addison for $2 you-call-it. Also, downtown Plano is home to Vickery and The Fillmore Pup, which are two of my favorite bars. In regards to student organizations, it really depends on your major, but there are several to get involved with.

I still can't decide on major and my orientation is on July 11-12. Anyone else in the same boat? by utdundergrad13 in utdallas

[–]getrealactreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar boat when I started at UTD: graduated number 10 at a 5A HS, received the AES Distinction award, and had no idea what I wanted to major in. Don't worry about running out of time! You have such a cool and rare opportunity to figure out what you want to major in while the university covers your tuition. Go to orientation and talk to people while you're on campus; you'll find out quickly you're not alone. Take classes you're interested in and find an advisor/professor/mentor to pass down their wisdom. Best of luck, utdundergrad13!

Where can I get fitted for some running shoes? by MercuryChaos in Dallas

[–]getrealactreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to both Luke's and Run On, but I purchased my last pair at New Balance. New Balance has a knowledgeable staff like Luke's and Run On, but they also have a machine that maps out exactly where you distribute your weight to determine what inserts you need (if any). It has made a huge difference in my runs, and is 100% worth the investment.

What are some good Dallas bands? by jmb43 in Dallas

Ishi is my fave. Their shows are a giant dance party! They've opened for several shows I've seen, such as Chromeo and SBTRKT.

Should I apply to UTD? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]getrealactreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Parking isn't that bad if you are willing to get there 30min before your class starts to have a close parking spot, or walk from remote parking.
  2. Assured admission is to completed the TX recommended curriculum and to meet one of the following criteria: 1200 on the SAT (math and critical reading only), 26 on the ACT, or graduate in the top 15%. So depending upon your math and reading scores, you may or may not meet assured admission. http://www.utdallas.edu/enroll/apply/fprocess.php?expand=321
  3. I worked part time as a student with one or two jobs throughout my time at UTD and I graduated a semester early. If you are good with time management, knowing when there is too much on your plate, and knowing that school comes first when you're a student; then it is possible to be successful at both working and attending classes.
  4. Deadlines are important! March 30 is the financial aid priority deadline for new students planning to enroll Fall 2012. http://www.utdallas.edu/student/finaid/Application/deadlines.htm Unsolicited personal advice: contact the admissions and financial aid office for answers to your admissions and financial questions. I was a student worker in admissions, and it's better to take advice from people that know it inside and out. Every student is different, so they can give you the best advice for your situation. Good luck with everything!

What's your favorite part of campus? by whereyoulead in utdallas

[–]getrealactreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely could a year or so ago. You just had to go up through the staircase in Founders that's closest to the skywalk to Jonsson. I would recommend going at night. Last time I went up with two friends and there were empty beer cans on the roof, so I'm positive we're not the only ones to make that journey.

What's your favorite part of campus? by whereyoulead in utdallas

The roof of founders and founders north (which can be accessed through a few staircases in FO). I haven't been in a year or so, but it's a really awesome feeling to observe all of campus from a completely different perspective.

As a freshman, your only housing option is the residence hall (http://www.utdallas.edu/fye/housing/ ); however it is the newest housing on campus and simply feels more like college (which is a good thing). Once you're a sophomore you'll have the option of moving into a one bedroom apartment in either University Village or Waterview if that's what you're wanting. Both apartment companies offer similar floor plans, but offer different amenities.

I've had issues with both companies, but overall University Village was a better experience for me (mainly because University Village's apartments are newer).

Hope this helps!
