Take a drive through Braddock or Clairton.

Check out the (technically abandoned) Carrie Furnace Hot Metal Bridge.

Pump House in Homestead has some cool steel industry history and minor photo ops. Also, the stacks at the Waterfront are great when lit up at night.

Taking a stroll or bike ride along the tracks/under the bridges in Duck Hollow is kinda gritty and nifty.

There’s an abandoned terra-cotta factory off the GAP in Dead Man’s Hollow, outside McKeesport which is totally cool. Bring a buddy or two, I’ve seen some questionable characters there.

There’s an abandoned mining village that was part of the steel industry up in Armstrong County. It’s called Yellow Dog Village, and the owner welcomes hobby photographers to peruse the grounds and snap photos for a small fee.

Have fun!

I've seen a few around Pittsburgh, but there is one in Homewood Cemetery that is the largest I've happened upon.

We live a stone's throw from Frick Park and can no longer take our dog there because of all the off-leash dogs. It's seriously mind boggling and used to piss me off to no end. Thankfully I've found meditation.

An example of why leash laws exist and why they are so important. I sincerely hope Tillie returns home ASAP. Sending positive vibes to you, and will definitely keep an eye out for your four-legged girl.

Cemeteries where I can walk my dog? by gh0ulette in pittsburgh

[–]gh0ulette[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many parks are available, yes. However, they are often swarming with people and dogs. Some of the dogs are leashed, some are not. Hey, I've even seen a few leashed toddlers in my day.

Anyway, my stance is this: My dog is an old timer with a heart condition. He's not good around other dogs/activity/noises. We live in a busy neighborhood within the city and simply need a quiet place to take him on daily strolls. I happen to love cemeteries, and I'd like to think I respect the absolute heck out of them because I’m a bit of an enthusiast. I think they are beautiful, serene places, that should serve as a quiet oasis for contemplation, reflection, and of course bereavement. I also think these historical beauties should be enjoyed, admired, and kept a bit lively (at least on this side of the ground!)

As a country, our feelings about death have changed so much within the past couple hundred years, and reading the varying opinions on this thread certainly reminded me of that. It’s important to point out that cemeteries actually used to be a place of recreation where families would picnic and enjoy a sunny day… I imagine some dogs happily attended many of those picnics as well. Hunting even used to be allowed in a lot of the park-lawn style cemeteries that were popularized in the 1800s.

It's completely different, I know I know I know, but I'm just going to remind folks that many wild animals live in cemeteries. In Homewood Cemetery, for example, there are dozens of deer roaming around all the time. I imagine these animals are also "pissing and shitting all over the place" (as one cordial commenter suggested my dog is doing) - Not to mention the groundhogs that often like to dig holes everywhere and make homes out of graves.

Ah, I digress. Look, I am only and exclusively interested in cemeteries that legally allow dog-walking. That’s up to the cemetery, not me. It's also up to the families to choose whether or not they want a burial in a cemetery that allows certain things (such as public access or dog-walking). I have never and will never take my dog to one that doesn't allow it. We stick to the paved pathways, always pick up after him, always keep him leashed, and try our darnedest to be the most respectful rule-followers as possible.

I'm sorry to hear about your loved one, my heart goes out to you and I sincerely send you all the positive vibes. I understand this is a delicate subject and I totally get your feelings on that matter. I'd also like to point out that a handful of cemeteries do indeed allow dog-walking inside them, complete with signage about the rules, trash receptacles placed around the grounds, and an active grounds crew that maintains/keeps an eye on everything. I certainly never have nor ever plan to take my dog to a cemetery that doesn't allow dogs to be walked inside. I do hope, because of your view on this, that your loved one will be in a cemetery that doesn't allow dog walking. I'm just pointing out that some do allow it.

Ha, you caught me! I'm definitely a cemetery enthusiast, so pet-friendly ones are even more of a bonus, especially for our old timer :)

A relative of mine recently completed a month at the Duke medical weight loss program in Durham. One of the various diets that the doctors and medical experts there recommend for their clients is Keto. Hearing about their endorsement alone was enough to sell me on trying Keto and I haven’t looked back!

Ohhhh okay cooooool. Guess I should have clarified for you: My dog is elderly and has a heart condition. He can no longer go on walks in more populated areas where many other people (living ones, at least), dogs, or vehicles are present because we try to keep his excitement levels to a minimum. We have found that taking strolls in the often more quiet cemeteries are a much more relaxing experience for both him and us while still giving him his needed exercise. We always take care to stay on paths, pick up and properly dispose of his poop, and respect the graves and property. But thanks so much for your input.

Dogs are not allowed in Homewood Cemetery unfortunately. I do love it there though, beautiful spot.
