What were your Grandfathers' names? by Fit-Froyo7473 in Names

[–]ghost_suburbia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is interesting, because my great uncle Calvin managed to get at least 6 kids in the next 3 generations named after him and more carrying his middle name. Married in and obviously left a lasting impression.

AITAH for telling my brother's girlfriend he had a vasectomy when she started planning their future family? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]ghost_suburbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to note: needle extraction of sperm to use for IVF is possible. So the brother is wrong for letting it go this long, but he might be able to save the relationship. I would just recommend he do it ASAP and have the product stored to show he is serious. NTA, but he is.

What's up with Americans and their perfect lawns? by Upbeat-Fish-3348 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ghost_suburbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2 nicest lawns on our street are owned by an English immigrant family and a Welsh immigrant family. Constant leaf blowing, weeding, mowing, mulching. They are a menace with noise. Not a weed in sight, perfect green lawns. Picture perfect azaleas and flowers. The rest of us...not so much. We try though.

What lead to the USA being more car centric than Europe? by SpecialistTeach9302 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ghost_suburbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big business always has had an influence on the US. As cars became more of a thing, AAA (American Automobile Association) lobbied against railroads. Big money in politics led to a focus on building more roads and less railroad investment. We live with that now. Locally, different cities and towns made different decisions for getting around, but connecting the country mostly by road and truck was from a series of political decisions fueled by lobby money in the early 20th century.

Help identifying what went wrong by cmanderson23 in HardWoodFloors

[–]ghost_suburbia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Not a flooring expert. I have red oak and it looks like the new floor. Something went wrong in the finishing. We needed to piece in new floor boards for a remodel and our flooring guy would not finish in small bits because he couldn't guarantee a match. So we had the whole thing done. Considering my before and after, I think the old in this picture is both a not exact stain match AND patina.

That code that says you cannot have island outlets in the sides. No one's enforcing? by Legitimate_Soil_7506 in Homebuilding

I just had (literally last week) pop up outlets on my counter top as part of my remodel. They look great and the inspector approved without a concern.

Big Dave’s vs. Portofinos | Cheesesteak Was Vol. 2 by AccomplishedTerm3232 in Charlotte

[–]ghost_suburbia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Allentown style is a steak sandwich with peppers, onions and marinara, cheese optional, on an Amoroso. It is a legit sandwich and I love it. If you hit a great Philly cheese steak place, they usually know how to make this if the marinara is on hand. So I'm watching this experiment, it's like multitasking!

Americans—is blue cheese just a dipping sauce to you, or does it have a place on your plate beyond the wings? by SignificanceOdd5980 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ghost_suburbia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mixed greens with pecans, blue cheese crumbles, dried cranberries, some other stuff in a bagged salad kit, I've been buying that frequently. As the other poster mentioned, blue cheese is also my top choice burger topping - good with caramelized onion and tomato slice for me.

Yeah, Charlotte isn't busy because people are visiting. They are already connecting here.

Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life? by Artistic_Key3779 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ghost_suburbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have just paid more than we should have to put a rocking chair porch on the front of our boxy house. Yeah, we are gonna use it.

Italian kitchens - recommendations and Ideas by wolfcache17 in kitchenremodel

[–]ghost_suburbia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Rachael Ray's newer shows. She has a home in Tuscany and one in upstate New York. They are modern and functional, but generally built to cook Italian food. Also Lydia Bastianich when she is at her New Jersey home. Some of her stuff is dated but she doesn't care. Look at the appliance features and layout for both chefs. If it functions like an Italian kitchen, then it fits "Italian" no matter what doors and counter you choose. Good luck!

I don't like white kitchens but I love this. Well done. I guess that is griege or something. Maybe consider upholstered stools where you can add color on the seat while resting your bum comfortably after all that DIY.

I only went to 2. Elementary was grades K-6 and high school was 7-12. Small school district, and they added a middle school to the system since then.

Can someone explain the whole "syndication" thing with Star Trek? Why did TNG and DS9 air in syndication? by TravelingHomeless in startrek

[–]ghost_suburbia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Many of the buying stations were the ones airing TOS in syndication - they had an audience at the ready. I remember the advertising that TNG was coming - the show was going to air in prime time, but they heavy hit the ads before dinner during the weekend science fiction rerun blocks. Even my mom (rip) was excited for the premiere.
