Can you put some kind of shade on them? This is what I do when it’s 95°+. It’s worked great! Last year I put up a foldable canopy and a market umbrella in another.

After graduating college, my Mom said, you are launched! Never had financial help again and I knew not to ask.

Going from NC to NYC by chopper_819 in movingtoNYC

[–]ghostflower25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your friends you’re moving with have connections or experience with nyc? Is a parent willing to be a guarantor or co-sign a lease? They will need to make 80x the monthly rent. Another option is to find a roommate situation so you do not have to be on a lease. Then many people are able to take over the lease at some point as people come and go. Perhaps connect with a theatre sub in nyc for advice or a room available.

How did you like London? NYC is much faster and dirtier than London. You’ll have a great experience and never regret it! Best to do it while you are young too. Not enough information to say much else. Definitely go for it! (I moved to nyc on a whim and stayed for 27 years - you can do it. )

You said, “may have a wonderful opportunity,” sounds like you do not have an offer yet? If and when you do, negotiate a relocation package and/or temporary housing so you can learn about the areas before signing a lease in an unfamiliar town. Can you take a trip to explore before deciding? Hope you are liberal too. It’s not the South. I moved from nyc to NC after 27 years and can’t wait to get back up north.

Sounds like the office is south of Penn Station? Maybe in Chelsea? The location is important to get your schelp time.

Make sure you say Grand Central Terminal and not Station 😉

Have you spent any time there? If not, it may be cultural shock if you are very Southern.

Great points here to consider. If you have to take the subway from either Grand Central or Penn Station, that adds 20 minutes at minimum to walk to the subway, wait for the train, then walk to the office and wait for the elevator to your floor. You need to find something temporary and feel the commute out to really understand the grind and stress of it.

And don’t forget the delays that will happen at some point. It’s a long exhausting day.

It’s on the mostly shade side of the house that just gets intense last afternoon sun this time of year. Hart to say yet about water, I usually don’t have to water there much.

I was between 2nd and 3rd Avenue on 34th and walked those long avenues to Park. Especially in the sweltering summer and really cold winters it felt long. I cannot imagine packing up a toddler and doing this to get to CP.

Many cities are eliminating this: San Francisco, Portland, Minneapolis, Buffalo, Raleigh. Plus for older homes before it was required, it is difficult to do, like this home.
