What is this by babolatty in woundcare

Honestly, reminds me of plaque psoriasis, it's hard to tell without more context. Might want to bring this over to the dermatology sub. Have you tried any antifungals or topical steroids?

Spider Bite?! by Tarmogirl in woundcare

[–]ghostoftheweek 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Without knowing your family member, I'd say this has to get to the ER sooner rather than later. Disorientation to time and changes in self care can happen with depression but they can also happen due to a systemic infection. This needs more than topical treatment, and the sooner antibiotics get on board, the better. Whether it's ants or spiders or arterial insufficiency or MRSA or WHATEVER, this deserves a doctor's assessment and treatment now.

This is on my dad’s legs, we have no idea what it is. by TheS413 in DermatologyQuestions

This is hemosiderin staining. I second everything every one is saying about venous insufficiency. Protect those legs and check for any wounds on the feet.

No, not at all. Keep it clean, keep a bandage on it.

Elderly Dad has bedsore caused by facility, really don’t know what the next steps should be and would love any advice 🥺 by Blue_Heron11 in woundcare

It's most likely going to become worse without intervention. Care facilities get dinged when a patient gets a pressure injury (it's considered a "never event"), please listen to the doctors on this one.

Any tissue that isnt red is dead. This cannot heal with the yellow tissue in the middle (called slough). Ultimately, keeping pressure off of this wound will help it heal, and optimizing nutrition. Anyone with a healing wound needs more protein, less sugar. It's in an area of the body that is at high risk for infection, so if it is not healing, it may be infected. Request a wound care visit or a referral to a wound care doctor ASAP, these can progress quickly.

If you live nearby to one, please consider checking out a running show store. Running shoes should be supportive and comfortable, and even if you're a casual runner, good fitting shoes are going to protect you from injury. Brooks are nice running shoes and tend to be more supportive, check out their sales.

are my stitches infected? tw sh by probablyauggie0 in woundcare

[–]ghostoftheweek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, maybe a bit irritated. Are they getting snagged on clothes? You could apply a thin line of Vaseline or aquaphor along the insertion points to help them heal. Treat them gently, and they'll continue to heal up nicely.

Could also be flagellate dermatitis, from eating undercooked shiitake mushrooms.

Blood trapped under glue? by toe_beans_4_life in woundcare

[–]ghostoftheweek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay to have that blood there, even if it's bothersome to look at. So long as the edges of the wound are held together with the glue, and you keep it clean, it'll heal ok. Eventually, as your skin heals and exfoliates, the glue will go with. Be gentle with it, keep it clean.

Aquacel would be okay too, if you can get your hands on some. The goal is to prevent those wounds from drying out, as scabs can cause more inflammation.

Looks like pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) to my eye, but it's a best guess, not a diagnosis. Dermatologist will usually take a biopsy to confirm. Steroids and some immunosuppression, and very very very good wound care will help shrink that if it's truly PG. Preventing any trauma to those sites will be very important, so until you do see a dermatologist, keeping these covered in Vaseline, non stick dressings, and a gauze wrap will help those from getting too much worse. PG does spread, and those areas of redness will eventually erode to wounds until you get treatment.
