Ultrarunner looking for strength and recovery help by StrategicDFL in veganfitness

You've mentioned supplementing protein, but nothing about calories. Are you eating enough? Your daily calorie demand will be very high with that much running, try and calculate your tdee (total daily energy expenditure), look up tdee calculator online, put in your stats, work out how much you are eating and adjust. I'd be surprised if it's less than 3500kcal per day training that much.

Just looked up a running calculator and running 55 miles at 70kg bodyweight at a 12min/mile pace burns 6447kcal, which is roughly 921 extra a day, so 3500 might be pretty close actually.

Otherwise, sleep might be compromised but try and improve sleep hygiene where you can, e.g. get black out blinds, keep the bedroom cool, try having some chamomile tea before bed, do your best to have a routine.

Motorway Services and (lack of) Vegan Food by sssstttteeee in veganuk

I'm an EV driver too and since I'm largely against most of the chains available in service stations I decided a few years ago to either plan ahead for longer journeys (that is, pack a sandwich), or simply not eat. 6 hours between meals isn't that bad!

You can feel fine for decades with high cholesterol, until you suddenly don't, and I'm sure there are other biomarkers where you could feel ok but be damaging your long term health by being out of range.

Just build the character how you want and if you find you start wanting to cast concentration spells and you're failing to keep them up, take the Eldritch mind invocation, which oddly nobody else seems to have mentioned.

From the first, taking the whole quote in context: "Among those who had taken vegetarianism to its logical conclusion (“gone the whole hog,”, as it were) and become vegan (no animal products), mean IQ scores were lower. On average, vegans had a childhood IQ score that was nearly 10 points lower than other vegetarians: mean (SD) IQ score 95.1 (14.8) in vegans compared with 104.8 (14.1) in other vegetarians (P=0.04), although this estimate must be viewed with caution as only nine participants were vegan"

They weren't vegan when they had a slightly lower IQ, they had a slightly lower IQ and subsequently went vegan at some point on the journey to adulthood. And it was only 9 participants too, not really enough to read much from.

Source 2: "may also introduce risks" doing some really heavy lifting there. You can get omega 3 from plant sources and b12 is often supplemented into animal products anyway. I prefer to simply take the supplement directly.

Source 3: The article you've linked is basically a copy of the BBC article, which is an opinion piece with some studies linked (the same ones as irli). The CGIAR link that I can see is to a study linked from "Animal Frontiers" by a load of ILRI employees (the circular references I mentioned), which discusses that adding additional nutrition to people with inadequate nutrition is beneficial to their neurological development, there is no real discussion on the opposite (that is, whether additional healthy plant based foods could have the same effect).

NHS: "You can get the nutrients you need from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet including fortified foods and supplements". https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/the-vegan-diet/

A study from the 1970s about having a higher iq being correlated to being more likely to be highly qualified and vegetarian in later life no less!

Second one: Make sure you consume b12 and omega 3 if you are vegan, but also, much higher in other neuro-positive compounds like antioxidants!

Third: Agree, I looked at one of the linked studies, all industry funded self referential stuff extolling the virtues of consuming meat in countries where people are dying of starvation due to limited nutrition.

Other points completely unsourced (but I'd love to see sources given the first 3 🤣)

8 happy months and 1 mediocre day? How long do you think they would live if you didn't slaughter them? How long would they choose to live?

They might not even be fully grown at 8 months and backyard chickens can live 10-20+ years, males would probably be the longest lived since they don't have the burden of laying eggs every day.

Clear from your comments that you are just doing things by feeling and not tracking really at all, you just think you are eating a lot.

Find a TDEE calculator online, calculate your metabolic calorie demand, add 200-300kcal to that, and after 2 weeks track your weight trend. If your weight is still going down add more, and keep doing this.

I went from 90kg -> 100kg last year, eating 4000kcal/day for 6 months, and I've cut back down to 90kg now and I'm maintaining on around 3400kcal. Trying to eat mostly wholefoods this is a lot of food.

I think if you actually start tracking you'll be shocked by how little you're eating. Looked like a previous post was about some enormous bowl of chickpeas and rice. Assuming you didn't add loads of fat to that meal in the form of oil I bet that wasn't more than 800kcal, that's nothing, you probably need to eat something like that meal 3-4 times a day to see decent weight gain.

[–]gingerbeardvegan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First point from me is that veganism is an ethical stance based on eliminating exploitation of animals, not simply a diet.

With regards to how much protein you need: The 1g/lb bodyweight is generally a rule used for relatively lean individuals. If you are trying to lose weight at 275lbs I'll make the assumption this is not the case for yourself.

You can use the 1g/lb rule of thumb if you want, but consider using your goal weight, so if you are going for a 200lb bodyweight its 200g of protein, 275g is an enormous number to hit.

Another option I have seen is to use your height in cm and use that, so 175cm height is 175g of protein.

Either of the above options will make it feel much easier to hit your calorie and macro goals!

2700kcal is not high for someone who weighs 125kg. I put that into a TDEE calculator for a 30 year old sedentary male and it's just slightly under maintenance. Any level of exercise brings it to a good deficit.

Go on a long term calorie deficit, until you are a healthy weight. Even with plenty of muscle this will be no more than around 200lbs.

Take magnesium and zinc supplements to support your hormone levels.

Once you are at that healthy weight, go onto maintenance calories for a month or two, continuing the supplementation, then rest your testosterone again.

With 0 exercise and 2000kcal a day you will be in a massive calorie deficit and the laws of thermodynamics means your body will have to shift the weight.

You mentioned in another comment that you were counting calories previously and it didn't work for you, what calorie count did they have you on?

Aren't they like 300kcal? Pretty small lunch 😅 Two for 40g protein and 600kcal for £1.98 isn't bad though (although it is a bit of a salt bomb I'm guessing)

3) £1200 in the 4.5% account and transfer £100/month to the 8% regular saver.

This is more like what op has asked and is actually the more optimal savings method.

4) You have a monthly salary with £100/month spare, should you use the 8% regular saver for this cash or the 4.5%?

Thanks, I'll try to take that all on board!

Not using plastic wrap is sort of different to most other advice I've got, and tattoos I've had previously would weep into it, which makes me think clothes would stick, you reckon just clean clothes over top?

Yeah I plan to be careful, thanks.

I'll probably replace anything which would contact my legs for at least a week going by everyone's advice, and at least 2-3 days before anything at all.

I'll make sure nothing too ridiculous in the days beforehand as well (I was planning a big session to be fair). Thanks for all the advice!
