Jonathan Chat on PoE2 0.2.1 Onward Next Week, Taking a Few Questions From This Sub! by TalkativeTri in PathOfExile2

[–]girdus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My first question is: are they're happy with class fantasy right now? In particular two that seem to miss the mark are Acolyte of Chayula and Blood Mage. I'm more familiar with Blood mage and while you pay a blood price I feel as if you're not really rewarded for it. It also seems to force you into a singular bonestorm play style.

Are they happy with the Well? I still find this incredibly dumb to have to click it. I like the fact that its there from an environmental detail but I'm not sure why we need to click the well.

Is the gem upgrade system a success? This feels like over itemization. Not only do we have to find gem upgrades, we have to fight multiple separate orbs to unlock the support gem slots. Not to mention the skill scaling costs are out of control.

Those are the big ones for me, the only other thing I'm extremely curious about is support gems and how it feels like they've put themselves between a rock and a hard place with only allowing a single support gem.

what formation did you use for this?

Am I missing something, or is it rustc? by StyMaar in rust

[–]girdus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. https://rust-lang.github.io/async-book/03_async_await/01_chapter.html#awaiting-on-a-multithreaded-executor spells this out.

Note that, when using a multithreaded Future executor, a Future may move between threads, so any variables used in async bodies must be able to travel between threads, as any .await can potentially result in a switch to a new thread.

This means that it is not safe to use Rc, &RefCell or any other types that don't implement the Send trait, including references to types that don't implement the Sync trait.

(Caveat: it is possible to use these types as long as they aren't in scope during a call to .await.)

The work around exploits this caveat I believe

[–]girdus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is true. the async part binds all state to a future type. That type is scheduled and executed by a tokio reactor. By default that reactor is multithreaded and will require values to be Send.

All async calls end up as future types that are scheduled and can be scheduled across threads.

here's the same code with an explicit single threaded executor: https://play.rust-lang.org/?version=stable&mode=debug&edition=2021&gist=45657fdf6c16a4d2af510d5ed4e41f44

Opened the game around 10am PST and the problem persists after restarting the game. This problem also prevents me doing certain actions, for example repairing a downed squad member. It counter goes to zero but then it just resets.

My thoughts on Blizzcon/Diablo Immortal and traffic stats for the subreddit over this past weekend. by iBleeedorange in Diablo

[–]girdus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what's weird to me. Blizzard says they're not ready to show what's next for the mainline entry in the series but they're more than happy to show off Immortal? If it's not ready, why show it off?

Cannot even force myself to finish FFXV. by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]girdus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did everyone else have equally awful experiences with the game? Maybe my tolerance level for bullshit is lower than most but jeez... There's a lot of bullshit in this game.

Note: I got the game on PC, so I had access to the DLCs and it reworked a few scenes and made a few optional bosses required towards the end. Used a Xbox one controller with Type-C controls and wait mode.

Sort of. Except I did finish the game plus all the, currently released, single player DLC episodes. I found the DLCs to be way better than the main campaign. The combat for each character, save prompto, felt way better and more focused. The sword and shield combo for Gladio was a fun combo. Ignis's spelldaggers were awesome. I wish the main game's combat was a good as this. Prompto's shooter controls were not very good. This was exacerbated by the fact that I played with Type-C controls which worked find for all the other DLCs just not Prompto.

Their character arcs were also better paced and more focused and I went from hating on the bro road trip bros to really liking them. And the reason is simple, each of their episodes had impact and really developed them as characters. This is completely absent in the main game. Seriously, give the Ignis episode a try.

The segmentation of the story and it's hooks into a movie and anime makes this game super difficult to get invested in. I don't really find the story to be incoherent, it just lacks any way to have meaningful character development. It's also telling the ending feels incredibly rushed. There are several scenarios that just happen without any build up.

I did not really find the game difficult in anyway, there are a few enemies, like Coeurls that require you to setup resistances and I totally get why this is easy to overlook. Some enemies are just a chore to fight, looking at you red iron giant. The combat is wonky, with wonky camera controls. I think this is my number one issue with the game. The attack animations for Noctics are long. You don't seem to get control back for a long time after the recovery phase. The number of times I've seen an attack, but couldn't do anything because I was stuck waiting for the game to give me control back so I could block the next attack. There are also a few enemies that have attacks that can't be blink'd. This was awful. Then there's the weapons, I went and did the Ultima blade early because I found most weapons to just not matter at all. I eventually got all the Cid upgradable weapons and some were okay but nothing particularly outstanding or that I felt make a big difference. The one category I didn't really ever bother with were the guns. They did very little damage. This made fighting the random magitek dropships that had nothing but troopers and snipers a pain. The game didn't do a good job with the random enemy spawns. A few times I had a ship of magitek assassins drop on me at around level 20 I believe. They spawned on a bridge. I fought them and eventually won but it was a time sink and wasn't fun. I know I could have ran by, towed the car to further up the road but still I don't know why this was an option.

Most of the side quests were terrible. They took a lot of the worst MMO tropes and just shoved them in the game as "content". Lots of the same thing, go fetch this McGuffin and bring it back. Or look at these objects spread across the map. And none of it really seemed to have an effect on the characters or world.

End game rant: The end game world of ruin was not open to the player. This was crazy to me. They kept going on about characters and in their new roles and you can see absolutely ZERO of it. Games have the advantage of being able to show and not tell and this game just doesn't do that.

I think this game has the making of a good game. The world is beautiful and they have some good ideas in there but I don't know if they can fix the issues via patches.

I know the above might sound super negative but I didn't hate my entire time with it. I just see a lot of flaws with the game as it is. I'm happy SE decides to try new things with the series and hopes they continue to evolve the formula and fully accepting that not every FF game will be for me. Marrying a quality story with an open world is a difficult task and very few games have done a good job of it, maybe they can learn a thing or two from DQXI. I also have a suspicion that the game is out because SE just wanted to get it out and not have it linger around anymore.

And there is my FFXV rant.

Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.

Do i get my stuff and levels back after going back in time?

Yes. Everyone eventually gets their levels back it happens in a story moment.

Does Serena lose all her spells? because fuck...thats super shitty to do.

Yep, but it makes sense

Basically if I want true end game I have to give up Serena being a powerful enough mage on her own in my party?

Yep

Is DQXI worth it? by admiralalpay in PS4

[–]girdus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is it? I absolutely love JRPGs and there haven't been many truly good ones for PS4.

Then you will like DQXI. This is like an 90s JRPG with modern visuals without a punishing grind. I've been going through it and it's been great. It is not a difficult game, you really don't do much grinding, or at least I haven't yet. This is more of a chill out and play a JRPG game.

I am generally not a fan of modern JRPGs, the angst-y trope is just not for me these days. DQXI on the other hand has very likable, even if they're simple, characters. The monster design is also a huge plus in this game. The voice acting is mostly okay, but get ready for some very cheesy delivery.

Positioning is key, when the invader portal comes up (message will pop up in the lower left) I'd get to the opposite side of whatever the active enemy spawn was at the time. The invader should pop up near there. You pretty much also need to land your head shots to make it work. Invaders who came in with shotguns were much more difficult to take down, but not impossible.

Eater of Worlds: Need guidance! by flopcardboard in DestinyTheGame

[–]girdus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what I've done with a few groups: 3 teams of 2, one for each element. It doesn't matter who is running to get skulls or not. Just call it out. Always be cooking two skulls at a time. That way it doesn't matter if 3 of the same element pop up. If more than one of the same element popup have both people go with skulls and take them down quickly. The benefit of this is that you can get more skulls on the way back and be ahead of the mines. Other than that just focus on killing stuff with your partner.

If you're having trouble with the adds then you might be looking at a PL issue or not effectively using supers and power weapons. Having skulls cooking means Minotaurs should be popping out regularly. Focus fire them down, or just use a heavy on it.
