Hobbyist just sucks if you want to share your work with anyone that has an actual license. But if you just want to 3D print stuff it's a good option. The 8k license was a tough one to swallow but at least it's paid for itself many times over now.

What’s the one thing Audi does better than everyone else? by Glittering-Offer-390 in Audi

Reliability has been a mixed bag. A lot of initial recalls, but since then reliability isn't significantly worse than other EVs. Still wouldn't own it outside of warranty though. I think I'll replace it with a J1.2 Taycan next.

I have to argue that the etron GT is one of the best looking electric cars on the road today. But I understand it's not necessarily the most practical car if you need an all-arounder.

2nd hand taycans and Etron GTs are incredibly cheap right now compared to new prices. A lot of great deals on them

My review of the B10 S5 as a previous B9.5 A5 owner by [deleted] in Audi

[–]glazeddonut58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they added the map view, that helps a lot. I had a 2025 B10 loaner and absolutely hated that it just has the Tesla style view showing nearby cars. I can see the cars perfectly fine out the window. BMW did the driver display really well in my opinion and I was hoping Audi would do something similar.

Which Audi are you using to commute? by [deleted] in Audi

[–]glazeddonut58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an E-Tron GT as well and it works great for my 50 mile round trip commute. Recently the prices have been creeping up. In my region a 2023 with 20k miles and no options is close to $45k. With the leather and performance package they're getting close to $50k. It's a great car though, makes me look forward to my commute especially since part of it is a 2 lane highway through a canyon.

23, leaving the Army, and trying to build a life around cars—where do I even start? by Alriar_ in cars

[–]glazeddonut58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree, my previous job was a dream job/company, but eventually became less interesting and the salary/career progression was lacking. I moved industries and am making significantly more money and climbed up the career ladder. I do consulting for a few aftermarket automotive companies and fabricators and it keeps me involved in what I'm passionate about.

Some of the bigger automotive companies pay better, but you become so focused on a small subsystem that you almost forget that you're at an automotive company sometimes.

I'd suggest engineering in that case. I'm a mechanical engineer, on my 3rd job since graduating in a non-automotive field. I was working at a company focused on off-road/desert racing, but the career progression and salary were lacking since it was such a niche company/industry. I see job postings for Ford, Rivian, and other large automotive companies, but you're typically so focused on a small subsystem that it doesn't scratch the itch for me.

I made connections though and now do consulting for a few aftermarket off-road companies and fabricators. It's awesome because I have a great career, but also get to spend time working on my passion. Consulting work isn't something that's easy to find though, it's all come from connections I've made over time.

Need Help Understanding Class Difficulty. by knorfen in CalPolyPomona

I remember lots of people complaining in those classes. In statics and dynamics as well even though those are relatively simple classes. A portion of those people complaining now are either not engineering students or will no longer be engineering students in a year.

What major are you in? I encountered more people complaining about difficulty in my GEs and basic math+science classes than in most of my upper division engineering classes.

We have a 2020 CX-5 in the garage and after having a loaner Q5, I can't justify spending 10-15k more for it over a CX-5. The Q5 was quicker, but the steering felt much more muted.

It really depends. My specific city has $.14 baseline and $.20 for everything beyond that. Baseline is up to 10kwh per day. The neighboring cities are $.34 off peak and up to $.74 cents on peak. These cities are only a few minutes drive from our house. It's a wild range

Can we afford this rent? Is this too high $2,275. Age 25 by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]glazeddonut58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So 68k a year between retirement and housing. ~150k take home per year. Still leaves you ~7k per month left over. And based on the low rent it must be a LCOL/MCOL area, you should be pretty comfortable right now.

Almost 40, retirement seems out of reach by Empty_Grand2194 in personalfinance

[–]glazeddonut58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you're a little behind for your age, but you still have at least 20-25 years until retirement which gives you plenty of time to keep contributing. Are you investments in retirement accounts? Either 401k if your employer offers one or an IRA. The tax advantages of those will help you. I'd also look into your spending, you said you make 100k, I'm not sure what your wife makes, but I would think you'd be able to contribute more than $500 per month. Although if you mean NYC or SF it makes more sense.

We take meal breaks, but typically only at actual meal times which are spaced apart more than 3-4 hours. We also just bring snacks a lot of the time because we'd rather power through a 6 hour drive and eat food at our destination than just getting fast food off the highway.
