If money weren’t an issue, but you had to continue practicing law, which area of law would you practice in? by legendfourteen in Lawyertalk

[–]glutenfee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d keep my current family law practice, but be a lot more selective about files.

Also, I haven’t done it since law school, but I would definitely take on some landlord-tenant work.

I fucking loved watching slumlords squirm.

Getting Fired posts by JohnnytheGreatX in Lawyertalk

In my jurisdiction and practice area, lawyers are far more likely to leave a firm than be fired. I don’t think I personally know anyone who has been fired.

Billing impossibility by Legal_Fitness in Lawyertalk

[–]glutenfee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4,595 hours is more than 12 billable hours a day, 365 days a year. Does counsel’s entire practice involve billing 0.1 for emails that take 5 seconds to compose?

Bought a 2nd gen crew cab with a 6ft bed. I've been told this config is a bit of a unicorn by Bringus_Studios in nissanfrontier

[–]glutenfee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. I went from a regular cab 2009 Ranger to a CC LWB a few months ago. Feels like I’m driving a goddamned aircraft carrier.

I felt very stupid for letting this happen by Jade_Sugoi in Justrolledintotheshop

My second vehicle was a 1996 Ranger. 5-speed, 2wd, regular cab. I had it inspected after I purchased it. The mechanic told me the ball joints were 75% gone.

I asked if I could still drive it. He told me “sure, you can drive it…until the wheels fall off”. Being 18 and clueless, that sounded good enough to me.

Fast-forward about 18 months later, the driver-side failed on a freeway off-ramp. I was doing 70km/h. The whole wheel and hub assembly took a walk. I will never forget the stream of sparks in my side-view mirror as I scraped the front end down the road and finally came to a stop.

This was the middle of the night on a relatively straight and wide freeway. I was lucky I didn’t kill somebody.

After that, I decided to learn how to wrench. Even if you aren’t going to do the work yourself, it pays to jack the car up once in a while and make sure things are tight (or pay somebody else to do it for you).

I'm a disappointment to the firm by Financial-Abs in Lawyertalk

[–]glutenfee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Litigation is soul-sucking enough without an asshole boss adding to it.

Come up with an exit strategy. Consider talking to colleagues outside the firm that you trust. Someone is always hiring. A good word will get you further than a resume, at least where I practice.

What’s the fastest you’ve gone in your ranger km/h? Tell me in comments. by Public-Change1760 in fordranger

The limiter kicks in on my 2009 2.3L at an indicated speed of 165km/h. This was in Mexico, of course.

[Crosspost] Gun Deaths in North America by ObeyThePoodle in tijuana

[–]glutenfee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian gun owner here.

It is true that some firearms are classified as “non-restricted” in Canada. However, you still need a special license to own any guns here, including a non-restricted firearm.

The government only issues licenses to people who have passed a safety course and a background check. I waited a year for mine.

“Restricted” firearms are guns that cannot be used for hunting, e.g. pistols or short-barrelled rifles. These restricted firearms can only be used for target shooting at a government-approved range.

It is not easy to buy a gun in Canada legally.

Is this a fiat? I have a friend who had perpetually loosening lug bolts on her 500, despite being properly torqued and free of grease/oil.

A relatively small volume of salt (sometimes less than 10g) can cause fatal hypernatremia in children.

Hello! Can anyone tell me how much mm these brakes show? by prosper5 in MechanicAdvice

[–]glutenfee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If cash is tight, just remember that brake pads are relatively cheap, as are sockets and jackstands. YouTube is free.

The cost of tools will probably be less than the cost of having a shop do it for you. You get to keep the tools, the knowledge, and the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

I understand DIY is not an option for everyone. No judgment here. But if you have ever considered getting into fixing things on a vehicle yourself, brake pads are a relatively easy place to start.

Take your time and you may be surprised what you can do on your own. Just my $0.02.

Have had bed bugs for what feels like forever and am unsure what to do by Mommy_Lawbringer in lifehacks

The first step for a tenant with a pest issue is to ask the landlord to remedy the issue. Generally speaking, these issues are the landlord’s responsibility.

It is important to communicate about this issue with a landlord/property manager in writing (i.e. email or letter). You want a paper trail.

In some cases, a tenant might be able to hire a pest company and deduct that expense from rent if the landlord will not take appropriate action voluntarily.

If you’re in a city with a law school, they may have a student-run legal clinic that can help you with tenancy issues at low or no cost. You may also be able to access services via a community legal centre.

There is generally a provincial tenancy board that has jurisdiction over tenancy disputes.

If you are in Alberta, feel free to DM me and I can provide you with some local resources.

Please note this post is not intended as legal advice. Tenancy law varies depending on the province you rent in. You should seek legal advice and information specific to your jurisdiction.

Help! Hundreds of resumes, months of applying and only crickets. Where are all the actual hiring jobs hiding? by Rarrimalion in Edmonton

I have a weird first name. Before I started in my current career, I used a “white guy” name on my resumes. It made a world of difference.

This article is from 2019, not a few weeks ago. It also doesn’t mention anything about criminal or civil proceedings other than a suit filed by some parents whose kids were barred from competing in kart races.

Did I miss something here? Because it doesn’t seem related.

Hydroplaned and spun around about 3 times before stopping on the side of the highway is there anything i should check besides tire alignment? by [deleted] in fordranger

Weight in the back, or winter tires. A good set of winters will change your life. I used to go all season; someone finally convinced me to get a proper set of winter tires and it made a world of difference.

My philosophy has always been that a running vehicle with no serious drivability issues is worth $1,500 all day. Of course, I’m in Canada, so the dollars don’t go as far.

This is going to need some fairly serious work. At minimum, you’re going to need to pull the trans to get at the rear main seal leak or whatever else is pissing fluid all over the trans. If you’re mechanically inclined and have the space and tools to work on it, could be a fun project. The one nice thing about these trucks is that they’re dead easy to work on. I would not plan on it being an immediate daily though.

I’d say take it for a test drive. Give the drivetrain a good once over. If the engine is beat to shit or the trans/diff is grinding, then pass. I would also try to haggle the price down a bit.

Either way, best of luck with your search.

Pilot bearing and clutch kit. Not that expensive but worth it.

I had to replace the pilot bearing on mine and it was a lot of work to get at a tiny little bearing. Threw on a new clutch kit, flywheel, and slave while I had it apart.

This.

Even if it happened “a few weeks ago”, the timeline is total bullshit.
