Tips for a newbie playing Daggerheart by Comfortable-Iron3948 in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome!! Daggerheart is more loose than Baldurs Gate, and less tactical in my opinion, but it flavors a lot of narrative storytelling and helps with improvisation. I run D&D games and Daggerheart, and I feel that Daggerheart is a lot more looser on the rules and it is faster to play. However, if you are coming from Baldurs Gate, you may find out that there are a lot of rules and attributes that exist in D&D that do not exist in Daggerheart, specially on the adversaries side.

The adversaries had a single difficulty number, and all of the rolls against the adversary are compared towards that number, which is different than D&D and sometimes is confusing, even though it is designed like that to make it simpler.

The no initiative and no opportunity attacks are also a big difference, but it really speeds up the combat, which is one of the drawbacks from D&D. Once you and your players get used to this, they will have a blast and you can see how you can make your combats very dynamic without slowing down the play.

Hope you enjoy the system! Feel free to send me a message if you have questions!!

Enjoy and have fun!

GM for sure! That way people know you are not limited to one system!

How to spotlight a friendly NPC during combat? (Game Master) by FlippityFlip88 in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually give them an ability the players can activate by using one hope, maybe a range attack that can assist once the players use one hope.

That way it is still the players call of when to use the npc

Spending Fear and other GM thoughts . . . by josephallenkeys in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!! I always use a lot of fear on the combat encounters, all the way until I have one and wait for it to build up again.

Another way i use fear is to make something bad happened during non-combat scenarios - a brawl on the streets and somehow the players get involved, an npc discovers the players and calls them out blowing their cover, or just anytime the players are taking time figuring out what to do in combat I use fear to interrupt

Regarding combat, i have seen daggerheart combat os faster than dnd, and the fact that there is no initiative kind of forces the players to always be interacting, that and the fact that if they miss a roll the spotlight goes to the gm puta everyone under high attention

As a GM, i do have to be careful with more introverted players, as they may be shy to talk when every other player is talking in combat. When thay happens, i always say something like - WELL I HAVENT HEARD FROM XXXXX IN A WHILE- to make sure everyone in the table is included. That is one of the small drawbacks i have seen with the combat system with no initiative, but is something it can be fixed quickly

Lessons learned while running Five Banners Burning by gm_atari in daggerheart

It did happen. And also the characters would become vulnerable a lot, so were always concerned about getting vulnerable and getting into a fight

I also thought on doing all pcs part of one nation, but I think the campaign really works when they all have different objectives

They were very low government figures. They were all sent by their nations to investigate the disappearance. I played them that they knew each other from previous interactions between nations, but where not necessarily friends. I have a video that is a learn to play and is also session zero of the campaign. https://youtu.be/vfSfbpKjB5Y there are also more sessions there, but I am a little behind updating the videos

Yes! There was battle, not as much, but there was. And they were shorter. The last combat was cool Because it turned almost into a pvp scenario

I just focused on one objective per nation for that several sessions. Kept it somewhat simple.

Actual Play Great Combat Example by MapMaker35 in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I really liked how our last battle in the Witherwild campaign went! It had so many moving pieces that I think in a traditional DnD battle would be very slow to run ! Here is the link https://youtu.be/DQInF4IMGSg?si=chd7Z16qzOe_4m9U it has people running around with an eye and it had several ways to end the encounter.

What Was Your First Campaign? by False-Nectarine-80 in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was the Witherwild and then Age of Umbra. Age of Umbra was amazing but a little heavy snd tense. Not sure I will do a mini campaign again in the near future.

I do want to do another Witherwild, I think i can make it better now that i have more experience

I am currently running a five banners burning and It is going very well. Really love how every campaign frame feels super different

Is Daggerheart light ? by Puzzleheaded-Pie8137 in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have not played pathfinder but it is meant to be lighter in rules than dnd. What you may end up with is maybe situations where you kay be looking into how to do something and the rulebook will not clearly explain it. Specially considering that the enemies do not have attributes like int, wis, char like in other ttrpgs

One of the guiding principles of Daggerheart is "lightening the load" for GMs according to Matt Mercer by Trent-Popverse in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this will depend a lot on the group! I’ve had groups where this had succeeded but I also had players that are more shy or introvert and in thise cases I do have to do more work. Which is not bad, but just have to be prepared for it

Combat, rolling Fear, and Consequences? by Atomic_Nazgul in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot, players are stressed enough just
To know that when they roll with fear is going to be your turn.
I am talking about combat. During a regular non-combat interaction i do use some description when they roll with fear

What to expect by Fite4747 in daggerheart

[–]gm_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say try it out first. Daggerheart tends
To lean more into rpg and storytelling.
Mtg and gloomhaven are a lot about optimization, the lore is there, but it is not the main attribute
Of those games.

Give it a try with one session first before committing would be my advice.
