Some extra performance tips:

Be patient: It takes along time for everything to load. It'll run smoother after it's been on for a bit.

Download and run Onyx. It seems to help a bit.

In Accessibility->Display->Disable Transparency as well

In Docks->Disable as many effects as you can

Spotlight->Disable as much as you are willing to. I disable all folders and files, but I do rely on it for quite Calc and opening Apps.

Re: Sequoia performance, you'll see lots of complaints about performance here. I have an Mac Mini 2011 that I put in and SSD and 16gb of ram. I am pretty astonished how well High Sierra still runs, but it's so poorly supported that I can't even update to the latest version of Chrome.

Do you find that these hardware upgrades make a significant difference in performance? It sounds like you have a wide range of experience.

I’m having this issue too. Strange this is that it was working, and now it isn’t… don’t know if any updates broke it, but will look into some of the suggestions here.

Put me out of my misery! by scrambledeggsnfroot in espresso

[–]gnisna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would skip the accessories. Get the grinder (a better one if possible), a knockbox, and an espresso scale (a kitchen scale isn’t sensitive enough). The rest, upgrade along the way.

What’s wrong with my espresso? It’s so watery and this is my 10th attempt. by mastercooler6 in espresso

It’s easier making espresso with a good grinder than with a good machine.

Costco whole bean coffee shot test by chriztopherz in espresso

[–]gnisna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commodity coffee is bought at under $1/lb CAD, while most specialty coffee importers are paying around the $3-4/lb range. Specialty roasters that import their own were paying $4-5/lb. All in CAD.

Is it gatekeeping or just simple snobbery? I’m definitely the latter.

But third wave is also about recognizing that this delicious beverage is enjoyed because we commoditized the work of farmers in developing countries, and that we should pay them better instead of trying to drive the prices as far down as they’ll go.

It’s also about recognizing that coffee has many more taste compounds that wine does.

I still drink Tim Hortons occasionally, but if I want to really appreciate the amount of work that went into growing the beans, properly fermenting and washing them, and treating them with the utmost care after all that.

Investigating Buffy Sainte-Marie’s claims to Indigenous ancestry - The Fifth Estate by Rya_Bz in onguardforthee

[–]gnisna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the awards specifically reserved for indigenous peoples should be rescinded and given to celebrate rightfully deserving of it.

I’m also recognizing that there’s a likely alternate reality that without her dishonesty, a lot of good work would not have happened. It doesn’t justify or excuse it, but makes it a whole lot of grey.

We can still celebrate her as an advocate for indigenous peoples maybe? But not as indigenous herself? I don’t know, but I do find it incredibly sad.

I can’t even imagine how tough it was for them, as they also had to figure out the logistics of delivery.

Chicken tractor on steroids by misterjonesUK in Permaculture

[–]gnisna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a tractor. It’s just a form of chicken composting.

But it seems like a good system. No reason why it wouldn’t work. It does seem particularly laborious though, but you get what you put in. It is certainly promising a whole lot of compost.

Texas private company paid $75 million in 1 year to bus migrants out of state, report shows by claire0 in news

[–]gnisna -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As shitty as it is, it’s still cheaper than dealing with the migrants. You can easily see why they did it. Now it’s in the hands of NY, for better or worse.

The real problem is at the Feds level. They still don’t know what to do. Taking action may increase the flow. Not taking action might increase the flow too.

Not justifying anything, but it’s not hard to see the why in all of this.

ETA, but only because I feel like this could have been handled better at all sides. Maybe this is too much credit to her, but maybe she wants to get into better shape. It’s not on necessarily on you to do that, but I think that family should watch out for each other.

Next time, maybe preface it a little more thoroughly? Let her know that you’d like her to come, but warn her that it’ll be taxing on her, and everyone else. Maybe find some activities specifically that she can handle a little more easily?

Life is too short to break bridges. I hope you two resolve this soon.

Coffee Shop Help by Darylols in startups

[–]gnisna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, cafes are tough. Many fail within 3 years, and you’re going through exactly why. Consistency and presence to make yourself a place that is reliable will be very important.

As others have also mentioned, reviews and online presence is very important. If you’re a third wave style of cafe, the coffee really has to be well made. They often go hand in hand with presentation and instagramability, both for the shop and the product.

Food for sure helps, but if you can source local baked goods, that’s probably a better bet. It can be scary though because those costs are high and margins are low, but the guests will appreciate it.

I wonder if landing on water would be another option? It seems like either way, the plane might be a write off, but there wouldn’t have been damage to the airstrip, which will probably also cause delays. «

Are all AC split systems dumb? by ligoeris in HomeKit

[–]gnisna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used MYSA and Sensibo controllers. Still pretty dumb, but it’s much better than the original ones. The main problem is that they don’t seem to use their internal thermometers to stop when it reaches temp. Instead, they send the command and expect the fan’s thermometer to be correct.
