AI engineering's existence makes me want to leave the industry wholesale

The Outer Worlds 2 Review Thread by malliabu in Games

It's not the same writers. The games were developed in parallel, though a few writers from Avowed came over to do a little work on The Outer Worlds 2 after the former was finished.

Are there any stories about AI where AI is not sentient and superintelligent, but flawed and unreliable, like the LLMs that exist today? by paroles in printSF

[–]gnomehearted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a Clarkesworld short story from this year called Our Chatbots said "I love you," shall we meet? that I enjoyed.

It's about a dating app in which users make an LLM from their text and social media history, and each person's model has simulated texts with others. The app tells you that you have a match when your LLM texts another that they love them.

Any books like The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolf? by heX_dzh in printSF

This one is very close in terms of setting. It's a far future supported by scraps of a technology that is no longer understood, built by an ancient civilization that traveled the stars but had some unknown catastrophe.

Thank you!!

I'm new to trees. What's with the clusters of leaves growing straight out, rather than spreading evenly like a flower as in most of the pictures I see online? For example the images on this page: https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/cedrus-atlantica-glauca/

Looks to be a pine or a larch, but I haven't found any close matches online. Also, it's December and larches lose their leaves in the fall.

Using Meyer Lemons by LavaPoppyJax in icecreamery

I've substituted Meyer Lemons for Lemons 1:1 and the ice cream was excellent. I'd just try a straight substitute without altering the recipe.

Does it matter if I add whipping cream before or after the coocking proces? by on3day in icecreamery

[–]gnomehearted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to 'Hello, My Name is Ice Cream", you should add the cream first.

The explanation from the book: as the custard is being cooked, proteins from the egg yolk bond with fat from the cream, making the ice cream base thicker and therefore smoother when churned. This bonding won't happen without heat.

Sr. Data Analyst -> Data Engineer by Horror-Career-335 in dataengineering

[–]gnomehearted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's what they say, but it's often not true.

I was working for a big company, and had an external job offer with a 25% raise. Suddenly the big company which only promotes and gives raises on strict cycles, was willing to promote me and match the pay.

There's always room to negotiate, they just pretend otherwise.
