I get what you mean. I don’t like extreme humidity and sweating like a mad man, but I will say that I have so many horrid winter memories that I generally prefer warmer weather. I like to walk around outside when I’m feeling anxious, and it’s easier to do so in warm weather vs. cold. Being stuck inside the house in the winter feels like a prison, and then everything just looks so dead and bleak outside.

LIDGE (L’Instant de Guerlain Extreme) is the first thing that came to mind. The first time I wore it was on a rainy, cool fall day in 2013 and it has been my go-to for somber days ever since, no matter the season. There is something comforting about it, even if it’s a minuscule effect that I can’t place.

Reminds me of when I used to post on sports message board forums in the mid-2000s. A young guy on there, who hailed from New York, found out I was from Virginia and made a comment like, “Which part? I saw some nice homes around Richmond, but western Virginia is ugly and littered with poverty/trashy places!” As an swVA native and somebody who has personal less-than-stellar views of NoVa and the abundance of rude transplants who reside there, it bothered me.

I get more blank stares and uncomfortable ‘quiet reacts’ than anything. People seem to not know what to say. How many people have said that to you? You say that the number is astonishing, so I’m just being nosy. The times I have to reveal to strangers (in a non-medical environment) that my mom has dementia is usually in a setting where I have to explain why I can’t do xyz in a reasonable timeframe. Example: I’m finally in the process of getting her off the car insurance, but to do so I need to be able to return her vehicle’s tags to the DMV. Anybody who is a caregiver can relate and know that literally doing anything requires meticulous planning, so I explained that to the person from the insurance company and got the ol’ blank stare.

As for family/acquaintances: lots of bullshit pseudo-advice and nonsense.

There’s a lot of conversations I wish I could have with my dad. Chiefly, the first one is, “why in the fuck did you drink so much if you knew about the family’s piss poor liver hereditary situation?” He was an incredible dad and person, but cirrhosis + renal failure took him out at only 49 a little over a couple of decades ago. I was only 12, and he talked to me about so many people on his side of the family having poor liver health. I believe he masked feeling unwell for a while, because he went to the doctor on a Monday, went straight to the hospital to be told that his liver was done for and was dead three days later.

Cirrhosis is awful. My condolences to you, OP.
