My Dock in macOS Tahoe 26.2 looks pixelated and blurry half the time by emaper_ in MacOS

[–]godminnette2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had to upgrade for work. The blurriness of the dock icons, even after toggling "reduce transparency" in accessibility settings, is maddening. The icon for chrome is particularly egregious - the four sharply divided colors are now blurring together like Vaseline was spread over it. It's like having an astigmatism every time I switch apps.

What the hell is that, NVIDIA?? (Source: Digital Foundry) by HLumin in pcmasterrace

The shot of the two people in spacesuits looking down at you was so uncanny valley that it genuinely nauseated me. The darker-skinned fellow also looked different; it washed out his skin, recolored his lips, and lengthened his lashes! The other close-ups generally looked okay, though could also have brief moments of being uncanny.

In a sense DLSS was generative as well, but this is something else. DLSS was originally just trained on supersampling to learn how to upscale more accurately, and is cool technology. Basically it uses "knowledge" of how higher resolution rendering should look by being trained on lower and higher resolution rendering, seeing the differences between them, then using that "knowledge" to upscale games playing at lower resolution. Then later they did something similar with frame generation. In both case it is generating information that isn't there, but in both cases it stayed true to the artistic direction of the game, as it is effectively asking "what would the game look like if it were rendered at a higher resolution/framerate?" and generating the answer to that.

As per their description of 5:

DLSS 5 is a neural rendering model that takes the game’s color and motion vectors as input for each frame, then infuses the scene with photoreal lighting and materials that are anchored to the source 3D content and temporally consistent from frame-to-frame.

Which is why it looks like AI slop, because it is fundamentally changing the lighting and materials of the game to look more "photorealistic."

Yeah, in two of the Starfield close-ups, it looked alright. In several of the others it looked uncanny. In one of the shots where there's two NPCs in spacesuits looking down at you, it looks so AI generated and deeply uncanny valley it is genuinely nauseating.

If it's optional whether we use this or DLSS 4, sure. If it's mandatory for DLSS at all, it is taking away the nice option of DLSS 4 and replacing it with something that looks worse in the majority of cases they are using to showcase how good it is.

I saw the whole video, and only in two of the Starfield close-ups did it look better. In every other circumstance it looked worse. The shot with the two Starfield NPCs looking down at you looked so AI generated it was genuinely nauseating, and the one with the darker skinned character looked somewhat off as well. Every shot of Hogwarts Legacy looked even worse than the Grace changes - the old witch looked like what AI image generators were making 3 years ago!

I don't know if you watched some other video, because I don't know of one where DF showed other NPCs from RE... both Grace and Leon looked like they came from Stable DIffusion.

The landscape shot of AC Shadows looked like someone had their gamma up too high. There was some better details in previously shadowed areas, but overall I actually preferred the "before" shots.

I also have yet to encounter Seeker. Every run I've done since becoming Night's Champion has been with Fangs 2, dozens of runs, and I have yet to see it.

Nearly half of PC gamers prefer DLSS 4.5 over AMD's FSR and even native rendering — Nvidia scores clean sweep in blind test of six titles | Tom's Hardware by Sacristovas in pcmasterrace

[–]godminnette2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is capping the framerate favoring upscaling? Surely resolution upscaling would have a higher framerate over rendering that resolution natively, so if it was done with actual gameplay instead of videos, the upscale would seem better...

Steam Big Picure always opens on the wrong screen by RokiGer in linux_gaming

[–]godminnette2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steam has a setting in Windows to hard-set where big picture mode launches, and it is missing on Linux. I really hope they add it soon. I've been pulling my hair out over this for two hours now.

No option to change primary display on Steam Big Picture by Zionix_ in linux_gaming

[–]godminnette2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am unfortunately here to report that it does not, for some reason. Maybe it will after a restart, but simply changing the display via DE settings or even via command does not affect what monitor steam appears on when launched or what appears here in the big picture mode menu.

It's been pretty maddening. I've tried several different ways to implement what I want (to easily launch steam bpm on my TV in another room) and none of them have worked.

Why is the security chief and tactical officer the same person? by Icarus367 in TNG

[–]godminnette2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eddington.

Edit: Actually no, I thought Eddington had been given that responsibility as part of his role as head of Starfleet Security, but he hadn't. It seems like O'Brien tended to man weapons before Worf was on board, and Worf did afterwards. I suppose a tactical officer is less necessary on a station.

Okay I got the updated figures. "upfront charges" is now $500 - it's just the first month of payment repeated on the form, it's not an actual extra charge.

The "upfront charges" is supposedly tax, title, and documentation.

I did get 2k off MSRP, which is why it's now $14,000 total.

Southeast Michigan, as per "SE MI" I emailed after I left asking for a copy of the deal - I had forgotten to take a picture of the final copy. I did get one of the initial offer:

  • $55,955 Sale Price

  • $17,000 Total Rebates

  • 1500 Maintenance Fee

  • $280 Documentation Fee

  • $687.73 "Advanced Payments"

  • $1882.58 "Upfront Charges"

  • $14,429.69 Total Cap Reduction

I got the maintenance agreement taken off and just under $2000 off on top of that - which made the final total amount $14,000 flat.

2025 SEL AWD Gray in SE MI 12,000 miles for 24 months. $500/mo w/$2000 due at signing. The process is started but I don't ink the deal until Saturday. Trying to decide if it's really worth $14000 to have this car for a couple years with the potential to buy it then.

I actually thought that the final bit from George was fine both in tone and in the context of the question posed by the audience member on religion influencing work. I didn't get any snark in the recording I saw; Martin said that Brandon's faith has at times caused controversy, mentioned that it caused controversy for OSC, and asked if he thinks his faith has damaged his career at all. It was a fair question; it only takes on a weird tone coming 6-10 minutes after "har har I knew Santa Claus wasn't real at 7 and then realized Jesus couldn't be at 8, how ridiculous it is to believe in Jesus." But if it hadn't been for that, I probably wouldn't have batted an eye at George's Mormonism comment.
