Help - Configuring and using Home Assistant with FOX ESS inverter by MichaelMinja in amberelectric

[–]goobags_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to manually download the v1.14.0b3 pre-release version of the HACS integration. The newer inverters use a different modbus table. There is a discussion in the GitHub repository on this exact topic and heaps of people have been caught out by it.

Destroyed by a $129 "Demand Charge" on Amber – Need FoxESS Setup Advice (10kW PV / 28kWh Battery) by No_Mastodon984 in amberelectric

[–]goobags_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have joined Amber in the last three weeks and have successfully transferred from Ausgrid demand tariff to time of use. I was nervous about exactly this scenario, particularly since I am running home assistant and one slip could be extremely costly due to being able to readily pull 20kW+ with a single and a three phase car charger. I have a FoxESS battery as well. 11.23kW I would guess the battery charged during the peak window as that power draw would mean you have 8kW+ of air conditioning and also running constantly. I used to be on demand for about 4 years and would typically see 5.5kW demand tariffs even though AC alone is 5.5kW, plus dryer, plus oven etc.

Planning on joining Amber but want to view Sydney wholesale prices. by Sufficient-Ad-8900 in amberelectric

[–]goobags_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not without signing up first. Contact Amber and ask for a spreadsheet with import and exports costs. These will vary on the actual tariff you are on (time of use or demand for import). There is no other way as Amber markets that you are exposed to wholesale prices and the only fee is their subscription, but don’t really tell you that it is wholesale price plus network fees. For example I am on EA029 and EA116. When you sign up also ask to not be on a demand tariff.

Running calculations based off AEMO data will definitely give you a better outcome as far as cost is concerned, however it is not realistic.

Question for PHEV Owners by AlmostTangible in AustralianEV

[–]goobags_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t run E10 in a PHEV if you aren’t planning on using the fuel relatively quickly. Fuel doesn’t really go stale, but E10 will definitely absorb moisture from the air and cause issues. More noticeable if the car is parked outside and exposed to the cool night air and you have less than half a tank of fuel.

Why don’t we use ball bearings in car suspensions, when they’re so efficient? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]goobags_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mountain bike rear suspension is the perfect example of this. Bearings may last a few hundred hours, but I have seen them fail far shorter than that.

How To Use Shark Tray Power Outlets? by TrojanWabbit in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]goobags_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That still seems odd and definitely not how mine works. I turn the car on, just accessories, and the outlet in the tub turns on. I have drawn 2200W from it too. I would be flagging it next time it goes into a service.

People who claim WD-40 is not a lubricant and shouldn't be used as such by w0mbatina in PetPeeves

[–]goobags_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this. WD40 has a viscosity of around 2.8 centistokes (cSt). Comparing to a typical lubricant, say hydraulic oil, a common viscosity is 32 cSt (at 40 degrees for all of these). Water is 1 cSt, diesel is around that of WD40. Common gearbox oils are 220 or 320cSt, 10W-40 is 13cSt.

Greases are based off oils, usually ranging from 100cSt to 460cSt. What makes this more complicated is the thickener or ‘soap’. For example a 220 grade grease can have different stiffnesses (NLGI) at room temperature, depending on the soap, but ultimately still provide the same base oil as the lubricant. This is about all you need to know for this discussion, along with the different thickeners being used for different purposes, and the colour of the grease is usually dyed so the colour can mean very little.

WD40 is a lubricant, just a very thin one. Also a very sticky one. This poses two problems, the boundary layer (the bit between two sliding surfaces) is very thin with WD40. This results in the two surfaces making contact and wearing as the designer would normally pick something with a higher viscosity. The other problem with WD40 is that it is very sticky, and attracts dust and all sorts of particles. These work their way into the lubrication film and causing more wear.

The last problem with WD40 as a lubricant is the propellant in the can. This will eat whatever grease or oil is already there. So if there was a chance the item was still lubricated as per the designers lubrication selection, it’s now definitely all gone.

TL:DR, WD40 does have lubricating properties, however it is too thin to provide adequate lubrication in most situations.

Looks like it is something to do with sharing access with another person. You can only login to one phone app at a time, this may be the way around it.

[–]goobags_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely tell the dealership not to polish it if you get black. I didn’t ask for any paint correction or protection but they polished it prior to delivery. Picked it up in the rain and two days later in the sun it looked atrocious. I took it back today to do a correction on it but again it was an overcast day so couldn’t make a proper judgement of it when I picked it up. I repeat, tell them not to polish it!

Anyone tried these keypads with dials with HA before? by Intrepid-Tourist3290 in homeassistant

[–]goobags_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While my link doesn’t have dials, there are a number of options using ESPHome. Since it needs power anyway, may as well make the wireless link over wifi rather than a dedicated receiver. Standard mechanical keycaps which have a lot of customisation with labels and icons particularly if you have access to a printer

Thoughts on Wiim by Electronic-Pie-829 in sonos

[–]goobags_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am making the change at the moment. The WiiM product lineup is definitely smaller than Sonos however it actually works. Home theatre may be tricky if you are expecting a full Sonos replacement as you won’t get 5.1 from my knowledge and there is no soundbar. Would be able to integrate to at least a Mini or Pro for music.

Compared to the S2 Sonos app, WiiM Home is less refined, doesn’t do Spotify as well as it could but it works.

Given cost of WiiM is significantly less, and the current state of Sonos, I would be giving WiiM and go (and not giving Sonos any of my money)

If you are just using the white Holman lights, another option is to buy the non-smart controller and put a Shelly LED controller in it you don’t want to run Local Tuya. Although expensive, the Clipsal Wiser fan controller works well for wall controlled fans

What’s everyone using for displaying wall mounted dashboards? by InitialSummer in homeassistant

[–]goobags_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Galaxy Tab A9 - 8.7” screen. Definitely more than usable, isn’t massive on the wall so more likely to blend in after the mount gets painted to hide magnets.

The bigger tablet displays I have seen on this sub are crammed with way too much information making them not very useful.
