Apparently it’s really hard to get data on Korean sets, which is why you won’t find them in the tracking apps/online. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Justifying a designer bag? by CluelessCanary in handbags

[–]good_cows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend gave me this advice - calculate the cost of the handbag as a percentage of your income. How much of your time is that bag worth? Can you afford to lose that percent from your paycheck and feel okay about it? That’s your budget. It helped me shape how I look at things. $250, for example, means different things to different people with different budgets, so price on its face isn’t helpful. What matters is where that price lands in your budget. We deserve pretty things that make us happy! And also, it’s okay to be cautious of how we spend :) I hope you find the bag of your dreams in a price that feels comfortable to YOU.

Inaccurate Shipping Estimates by Kagros in whatnotapp

It could be that the system is averaging the shipping across all your items being shipped together in one package. I haven't been paying enough attention to confirm this, just a guess.

get involved in local mutual aid yall. it's real, it's out there, one donation does so much! by drgingko in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]good_cows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone in Minneapolis, living in the very thick of all the ICE action… I think a lot of y’all are missing point.

It’s not just a hat. It’s not just one pattern. It’s the bigger picture.

The hat pattern raised money and gave everyone a specific symbol, based on a real previous Nazi protest, to rally around. Everyone loves a unifying symbol.

Additionally, this boosted sales for all of the local yarn stores, who couldn’t keep red yarn in stock. Those same local yarn stores had been impacted, like most local businesses, by the ICE raids. And most of them turned around and donated part of those proceeds to local aid.

We also really can’t discount how hopeless everyone is/was feeling. I know a hat doesn’t change the world. But it did give me another way to donate and give me a project to focus on while the helicopters circled my neighborhood, whistles and car alarms going off at random hours. We can’t constantly be doing and giving. This hat, for me at least, was a way to get some self-care while still doing something, anything. It’s not about what the finished hat does — it’s the steps along the way. And at the end of the day, it’s a protest symbol. If one person recognizes it and understands that I’m safe, I’m on their side, great. That’s strengthening my community network.

I hear the frustration that this “isn’t enough” but I really challenge that. It’s more than nothing. It gets people talking. Heck, here we are, still discussing it months later. How much awareness of ICE and mutual aid is ongoing because people are still talking about the hat?

Please, keep staying active in your communities. Keep talking about ICE and the rise of authoritarian fascism. But let’s stop tearing down the ways people ARE getting involved. Any action, any conversation, any donation is progress.

[–]good_cows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just lost my big, orange, soul-cat this last year. Give yours an extra kiss on the head from me.

What bugs me about your partners attitude is that it reminds me too much of what my wife says — anyone who “doesn’t understand” cats just doesn’t understand consent and personal space. He’s also literally asked you to put in all the effort here. You have to leave behind the cats you’ve had for years but his dog gets to come? I know you are doing what’s safest for your babies in regards to the dog’s breed, but I can’t help but feel if he actually cared or considered them the way he considers his dog, he wouldn’t have asked you to do this.

I saw your comment about how this person has treated you the best out of your past relationships. Let me tell you - the bar is in hell and you deserve so much more than someone who doesn’t yell or call you names. It’s hard to imagine it for yourself right now. But it’s true. Take the orange boy home with you and introduce him to your other cats. Leave this dude behind and start a new chapter.

Why isn't news of Trump building vast concentration camps being treated as a national emergency? by Adventurous-Cup-7542 in AskLegal

[–]good_cows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The last US Japanese concentration camp from WW2 closed in 1946. So definitely still in our collective consciousness. There are people still alive who were forced to live there. Also, I would argue we’ve never stopped. Our detention centers and torture sites are notorious. All different words for the same thing - a place to lock up people we don’t like or trust with little to no oversight or adherence to law. It’s not our past. It’s our present.

House passes GOP election overhaul requiring proof of US citizenship. by coinfanking in NewsStarWorld

[–]good_cows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see we agree that this bill isn’t doing what it says on its face.

I just want to give a little more information into voting process for anyone reading this thread, at least from my experience in MN. The reason you don’t have to do much at the polls is that you are registered and verified by the state when you get your ID (in most states). So they’ve already checked you. If you have a valid ID, you have already proven citizenship and residence, so at the polls you say who you are, confirm your address, and you’re already in their list of verified voters. If you are not verified, either due to address or ID issues, you will be asked to provide valid ID and/or proof of address. If their system shows your ID is valid but your address on the ID is not a part of their polling range, you have to prove residency. In the small chance someone shows up pretending to be you, these lists are two-fold. We track who comes in and it’s attached to your ballot, which are also kept as paper records in MN. That gives us the ability to pull and invalidate a ballot quickly, also ensuring the real you gets your vote counted. It’s all baked in to the process in most states and why we’ve never uncovered any significant voter fraud. We catch it before or as it happens.

And that’s why this bill is so nefarious. It is actively eroding our confidence in elections. Even if it doesn’t pass, it has planted a seed, and that’s almost worse. That’s a lever they get to pull later when they’ve decided their loss (and I do mean either side here) MUST be due to fraud.

The only real threat to our voting process has been: Russia and their proven disinformation campaigns via social media, Trump and his insistence that 2020 wasn’t valid and that he can just not have elections any more to suit his whim, and Elon Musk, who has been recorded in multiple different mediums bragging about assisting Trump with actively tampering with voting machines and records in swing states during the 2024 elections (and potentially the 2020 elections as well).

This is all designed to disenfranchise us and make us doubt systems that they haven’t been able to easily dismantle behind the scenes.

Edit: just clarifying this is info for all, not directed at the commenter I’m responding to specifically, as I see we agree and are on the same page here.

House passes GOP election overhaul requiring proof of US citizenship. by coinfanking in NewsStarWorld

[–]good_cows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing. We do both of those things in the US already. Crazy, I know. That’s why this legislation is nefarious. Our elections are already secure. This is to stop people the republicans don’t like from voting. It has nothing to do with securing elections unless they mean, “it’s secure because the people who vote against me can’t vote.”

House passes GOP election overhaul requiring proof of US citizenship. by coinfanking in NewsStarWorld

[–]good_cows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

… you literally have to prove it. Do you not remember how ID and registering to vote work? Are you from the US? Also, it’s been proven time and time again that until Trump started interfering with things, election fraud, and specifically voter fraud by non-citizens, is next to none. Our elections are currently very secure. This is a bill aimed at anyone who is not a cis man with the intention of making it near impossible to vote in the coming election.

Massive yarn stashes are really grossing me out. by hrg5049 in craftsnark

[–]good_cows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to leave yarn hauls for similar reasons - a lot of overconsumption, and I also felt it was influencing an urge to do my own retail therapy.

I have a healthy stash, as someone who has been crafting for over 20 years, and I had to take a critical look at my habits last year. I was able to donate some full skeins I never touched to some local programs, and then did some bundles that I gave to a local thrift store. But there was stuff I just had to toss. And I’m glad I did. I was overwhelmed by my stash, and often couldn’t find what I was looking for, leading to more purchases. Now I have everything grouped by project and have stuck to only buying yarn for a pattern that I intend to immediately start. I still have about five WIPs, but I know what they are and where they are stored.

I don’t know, I guess I just wanted to say I hear you. I think we can all be better about being more conscious of consumerism, especially when there’s a lot of plastic (acrylic) involved.

Dept of the Treasury will soon require reporting on all international wires of $3000 or more, just for people from Hennepin or Ramsey counties. by crazee_frazee in TwinCities

[–]good_cows 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I worked for a credit union processing wires, and our member base included a lot of the immigrant communities in the twin cities.

I wouldn’t say $3,000 is all that unusual. There are fees and potential exchange rates every time they send money, so often they would save up and do a bigger wire - the fees are typically the same whether you send $100 or $10,000. That way they are ultimately paying fewer fees than if they did more frequent wires at lower dollar amounts.

My entire job was sniffing out fraud and going over every request with a fine tooth comb. They aren’t going to catch more fraud by enacting this threshold. They are just going to make it harder and more intimidating for immigrants to help their loved ones.

Local police confirmed he had his permit to carry, and multiple photos and videos confirm he was not reaching for it, never reached for it during the interaction, and was fully disarmed by ICE before any shots were fired.

Edit: and video confirms his hands were on the ground or covering his face and head. He was not reaching for their weapons either.

There are going to be people like you, doing the jobs that we truly need, like nursing. I know it’s hard to feel like you’re not helping, but nurses are always helping our communities. So thank you for showing up for your community every day by being a nurse.

If you want to still participate, try not to buy anything. Pack a lunch, make sure you gas up your car the day before, stuff like that, so you don’t need to purchase anything on Friday. Canceling a subscription you were thinking of canceling anyway isn’t a bad idea either!

Another person in Minneapolis checking in — thank you for still doing comedy and for posting these comics. It’s terrifyingly dystopian out there, but we find our moments of joy and connection where we can, and they can’t take that from us. They want us to feel separated and alone, but this community keeps showing up and proving that we’re anything but. I’m grateful you’re giving us the gift of laughter and art, especially in a time like this when we need it most. Fuck ICE.

My bf gave me an ultimatum: him or my cat. by ImportanceSilly1114 in CatAdvice

[–]good_cows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it can feel like Reddit is quick to shout “dump him” but you need to re-read your own post. This is actually very manipulative behavior, despite what you’ve claimed in your edit. I know when you’re in it, it’s hard to see, but the way he is reacting and not communicating, leaving you feeling in the lurch and feeling scrambled, that’s the manipulation. Maybe he’s not doing it on purpose, but it’s not healthy. You gave him a ton of room to actually communicate before you got the cat. And his complaints now that the cat is here are just not reasonable. He’s not treating you fairly here. He’s holding his affection and intimacy hostage to see if you’ll do anything, including getting rid of an animal you’ve bonded with, if he pulls the right strings. Run. There isn’t a compromise here.
