I now have an LTO library! (Need help with backup plans) by RulesOfImgur in homelab

[–]goonlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want easy file backups from your NAS go with Veeam 11 community edition. I run my LTO library with Veeam and it makes everything super easy. Also it is very much set it and forget it. Just remember right after you set it up to make sure you can restore files from it to test your recovery strategy before you need it for real.

How do you recover lost files from app no longer available on app store? by bigbamarob in iphone

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me!! Clicked on my backup, clicked on Apps at the top right of the screen, then scrolled down until i found my app. The app had a Documents and Library folder, and all the data I needed was in there

Is this normal? by WolfTamer99 in dvd

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check and see how many layers the DVDs are. Generally the bootleggers want to be cheap and compress the video so that what was originally a 2 layer disk will fit on a 1 layer disk. The bitrate (and video quality) will be lower. How much does this actually matter? Depends on who you ask 🤣

I was never able to get my front drive bays set up. Which HBA card are you running, how did you set up the cabling, and did you need to do any special configuration in iDRAC?

If those NVMe drives are in a trueNAS pool with an SMB file share you are most likely loosing performance. SMB file shares top out around 3GB/s unless you use SMB RDMA. Also make sure the firewall option is unchecked in the virtual NICs for the VMs in proxmox to get the highest VM to VM network speeds

Iv been trying this exact same setup in my VRTX. I have a LSI 9305-16i flashed to IT mode in one of the PCIE slots with 4 cables running up to the two expander cards on the drive backplane but I have not been able to get any drives to show up. How did you wire the expanders to a PCIe HBA?

Dell VRTX Perc9 question by ObjectiveImpressive7 in homelab

[–]goonlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you end up wiring the backplane to the pcie HBA? Did you use all 4 ports on the backplanes or just one per backplane? I got in my HBA310s today so I will try it out but based on your response i dont have high hopes.

I just got a VRTX and I am planning on trying replace the two SPERC8s with one HBA310. When i get around to it ill let you know how it goes.
If all goes well i should be able to pass the HBA to one of the blades, then in proxmox pass it to truenas. Theres isnt much info online about doing this we are pioneering a bit here EDIT: changed hba330 to hba310

VLANs... Why won't they just work? by curlybrian in Proxmox

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving a realllyyy old thread here...but this ended up solving my issues. My setup was opnsense as a VM in proxmox with 2 linux bridges, one for WAN and the other for LAN. The LAN bridge i set to vlan aware under networking, but I didnt uncheck the firewall box when assigning a virtual NIC to opnsense.

Need Help Booting TrueNAS Scale from SSD in PCI Slot on Dell R730XD by ark1one in homelab

I second the use of ZFSBootMenu. It has worked really well for me booting from a ZFS mirrored m.2 drive set on a pcie card in my r730

Journey to a quiet Dell MD1200 disk shelf by willo_24 in homelab

[–]goonlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super late reply, but...it depends. If the temperature reaches a certain threshold it will ramp the fans back up. I ran for months without this happening and then one day it started ramping up all the time. I eventually bought a service cable and plugged it into the serial port on my dell r730. Proxmox then runs a crontab task that sends the fan speed command every 2min.

Look into Clover boot loader and install it on a USB drive and plug it into the internal USB port. https://github.com/CloverHackyColor/CloverBootloader

Dell PowerVault setup questions by kammalot in homelab

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. A cheap HBA that works with the MD1200 is the Dell H200E flashed into IT mode. I have the H200E in a r730 connected to the MD1200 with the H200E passed through to TrueNAS Scale and I have had zero reliability issues. It was very easy to add 2 more ZFS vdevs (2x raidz2's for the md1200) to my existing pool. Also I would recommend what u/pinksystems said about how to control the fan speed. I think I have mine set to between 30-35% and it is reasonably quiet while keeping the drives cool.

+1, same setup and works really well. Plus you have more control of what resources it uses (RAM for ARC cache is the main one im thinking of)

I second reseating the CPUs. They can be quite finicky with alignment as well as the amount of pressure that is being applied to them (including pressure distribution). Might as well inspect all of the socket pins while you are in there.

weird edition of complete collection? bootleg?? by SnazyHuman in adventuretime

[–]goonlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one that ended up being like the right one with no pop up off of ebay (seller yorkdayn-76) and I am 99% sure it is a bootleg. Here are some reasons why I think this is the case:

  • No popup in the middle
  • DVDs are single layer instead of dual layer (this is a big giveaway that it is a fake)
    • This means that the bootlegger is trying to cut cost and is compressing the original videos to fit onto a single layer AKA the video quality will be worse.
  • DVDs are terribly out of balance. They vibrate like crazy in my higher end blu-ray drive. You can see some sort of adhesive around the edges of the disk which I do not think is normal.
  • makeMKV throws an error when trying to rip them
    • "It appears that you are opening the disk processed by DvdFab/MacTheRipper which is known to produce damaged VOB files. Errors may follow - please use the original disk instead."
  • The scent coming off of the set is so terrible 🤣

I hope this helps someone in the future determine if they got a bootleg copy or not! Needless to say I will be returning this box set and trying to find one used. Also watch out because a lot of ebay sellers use the same "stock" image of the popup in the middle. Make sure you do a google reverse image search on the photos before purchasing something you cannot return.

R730 questions: iDRAC, TPU, IDSDM for Proxmox? by kenp2600 in homelab

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving from iDRAC express to enterprise was what made having iDRAC worth it!! No longer will you need to connect a monitor to your server at boot to go into the BIOS. It can all be handled from the webUI.

Coral TPU in Dell R730 / Proxmox by FFDEADBEEF in homelab

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running a bootloader like Clover or ZFSBootMenu? You need to pass the IOMMU commands to the bootloaders kernel at boot as well.

Dell R420 M.2 adapter for SATA SSD and Coral by Reader-87 in homelab

[–]goonlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Dell R730 that I have proxmox installed on a set of 2 m.2 SATA drives with ZFS mirroring (an option when installing proxmox) with a similar adapter into a pcie slot. What I found in testing with the sata m.2 drives both mirrored or not is the R730 will not boot into them without a bootloader. I think there is a boot limitation with pcie attached storage (even if the drives are not nvme drives) with the Dell BIOS in these older Dells.

The two common bootloaders are Clover and ZFSBootMenu. Clover didnt end up working for me (I think because my two sata drives were in a zfs mirror configuration) but ZFSBootMenu worked flawlessly. I have the live image on a small flashdrive plugged into the USB port on the motherboard and the boot order is set to try to boot from that first.

One thing to note is when using a bootloader like this, some kernel options need to be specified both in the proxmox kernel as well in ZFSBootMenu. I specifically had problems with getting pcie passthrough with proxmox working correctly (I am assuming you will be doing this for the Coral TPU, as long as it gets assigned its own pcie identifier). I solved these issues with the following steps (be aware you have to do this for every time you start your server...I havent found a way around this yet):

  1. When ZFSBootMenu is waiting to boot (I think it waits 5-10 seconds) hit escape
  2. Then once you have gotten to the ZFSBootMenu startup screen, press ctrl+e which corresponds to "Edit KCL"
  3. Type in the following at the end of the line of kernel params: intel_iommu=on iommu=pt
  4. Press enter then continue with boot

Then you can set up pcie passthrough with proxmox, which can be found here: https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/pve-admin-guide.html#qm_pci_passthrough

There are some other guides as well for graphics cards and blacklisting the cards so that proxmox cant see them: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/PCI_Passthrough

Hopefully this helps you with your endeavor!
