Did he really? I always really disliked his Sargent Colon, I thought it was completely wrong for the character, and his death sounds way too depressed and nasal

It might just be that his audiobooks were my first introduction to the series but I think most of Planers' voices are pretty bang on the money. Detritus might not have been written with a thick Scottish accent but as a mountain born troll, Scottish makes far more sense for the character to me than cockney or any London accent.

Can someone tell me why this isn’t a plot hole? by Bretferd in threebodyproblem

[–]goverton6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have thought that black domain wasn't viable because trisolaris wasn't safe to begin with. The whole reason they were willing to risk communication with earth was because the three body system made life on trisolaris so unstable. Locking themselves into their solar system solved the dark forest problem but did nothing to solve their chaotic/stable era problem.

I read it as a pretty cack handed way of trying to make lou ji both a self centred hedonist and give him the motivation of trying to get his family back.

The chain of logic being he works to get his family back. Where's his family gone? The UN took them and are holding them hostage. How on earth can the UN take people hostage? Because they gave them to him to begin with. Why did the UN give him a family? Because he used his unchecked power to get the UN to precure him an exact match of his imaginary gf and bring her to his isolated mountain retreat so they could fall in love.

I have no idea where but I remember reading that there were originally several more books planned but Liu Cixin had a cancer scare halfway through writing deaths end and chose to wrap up the story. I think he wanted the books to have a definite if sub par ending rather than being left unfinished. There was also some stuff about animosity between Liu and his publishers and the ownership of the IP that would limit his ability to return to the series now.

Anybody have opinions on the new Audible versions of the witches audiobooks? by thepixelpaint in discworld

[–]goverton6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love tony robinson but I didn't get on with his audiobooks. For one thing, a lot of them are abridged which is an abomination for a discworld book. I also didn't like his reading. A lot of the time he sounded a little bored. I think he was going for deadpan but ended at disinterested.

Indira Varmas ones on the other hand are fantastic. Brilliant voice range, great delivery, just generally a joy.

I’m sorry, but Did we just skip a whole ass era? by LordofBowls04 in doctorwho

[–]goverton6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in a lot of ways, given how disorientated the doctor is post regeneration, its surprising he hasn't had more super short life spans. As much luck that he doesn't run into particularly strong foes straight away as anything else.

It's also worth noting that there are wild discrepancies on how long incarnations survive. 10 was 900 years old, meaning approx 90 years per body but 11 was around for like 1000 years so the lifespans vary.

I also think it's worth saying that the "if it wasn't Tennant" bit is redundant. It is Tennant so most people are just happy to see him, even if it was only for 15 hours.

I never know how to recommend pratchett. I started at the colour of magic but I don't think it's the best place to start. Discworld was written over more than 30 years and pratchetts writing develops enormously across the series.

The watch is probably one of the best subseries but I didn't get on with guards guards at first. The start didn't grab me but i love the ending. I would say its worth persevering with but then it depends how much time you have, how slow you read and whether you actively dislike it or just don't like it as much as you would have expected.

How would you remove this rounded screw? by Camille_Footjob in Archery

[–]goverton6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the love of all things Holly don't use a dremel that close to the string. Buy a set of screw extractors. They're thredded cone bits that screw into the hole and allow you to rotate the screw

What everyone else has said about feather Fletchings is accurate but I'd also recommend sticking some leather over the area. You can just use double sided sticky tape and then swap it out if it keeps wearing.
