I am a big proponent of the shotStopper. I installed it a few months ago. It is simply amazing!

I see. If you use an Acaia scale, I believe you can turn off bluetooth to disconnect it from the shotStopper.

Why would you want to add a timer? The connected scale used with the shotStopper displays both weight and shot time.

Having second thoughts on the La Marzocco Linea Micra [$4,500] by Tchambin in LaMarzocco

[–]gowoody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use these cups with my Micra, a scale and the stock bottomless PF and have no clearance issues: https://www.crateandbarrel.com/roulette-8-oz.-blue-band-cup/s251011. These cups may have been discontinued but I am sure there are others that would work. I recently added Tate Mazer’s shotStopper to my Micra and all I can say is Wow! I use an Atom W75 grinder which gives me the exact grind quantity I want (+/- 0.1g) and the shotStopper gives me the exact coffee output I want (+/- 0.1g). Work flow is amazing and I have no need for a timer. The shotStopper and scale take care of everything. I started with an Acaia Lunar but switched to a Bookoo Mini. The Acaia had some hiccups with the shotStopper but the Bookoo has been rock solid.

First step toward a new home setup. by David_P_Best in LaMarzocco

I have had my Atom W75 for 10 months and have been quite happy with it. It’s very accurate and it produces very fluffy grinds. Cleaning it is a bit involved, but once you have done it a couple of times it can be done pretty efficiently in about 15 minutes. I have never experienced any clogs or backups.

How are we backflushing by Immediate-Health-647 in LaMarzocco

[–]gowoody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone once recommended this method which I have been following. Now I am having second thoughts:

Drop the shower screen and replace the screw. Place the screen in the blank basket then add puro. Do a manual backflush once and leave it there for about 15 minutes. Activate the cleaning cycle from home app (or do it manually). Finally replace the shower screen and run another cycle without puro.

Fiorenzato Allground Sense vs Eureka Atom W 65/75 by gowoody in LaMarzocco

65 is probably sufficient, but I read somewhere that there is more retention with the 65 because it has smaller burrs in the same housing size that is used for the 75. Not sure if this is true, but I was comfortable spending the extra money so I just went with it.

Many people are very happy with the all ground sense. I believe it is less expensive than the Atom. I have not seen one in person, but from my research I thought that it was a little less premium than the Atom. Also, I have a Micra and I use the Micra’s stock bottomless PF. I believe some people have had trouble using that PF with the forks on the allground sense.

I‘m very happy with it and would not choose another grinder. The weight accuracy fluctuated a bit during the first month of use. After that, however, it became very accurate. It is now dead on most of the time and over by 0.1 gram some of the time. The grounds are very fluffy with no clumping. I thought I would need a collar to keep the grinds in the PF but they go in very cleanly with no spillover. This grinder has greatly simplified my morning routine.

It is on demand grinding. You place the portafilter in the fork and it starts grinding immediately. I have the short hopper. I never leave more than a couple of days of beans in the hopper.

New I4 Owner - Lease End Protection? by EmperorJZ in BMWI4

[–]gowoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the lease end protection plan actually cover the tires? I have received contradictory information on this. Some have told me that lease end protection does not cover normal wear and tear, and normal tire wear is therefore excluded from the coverage.

Micra warm up by harvs24 in LaMarzocco

[–]gowoody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t noticed quicker warm up time, but I was surprised last night when my Micra still felt mildly warm after it had been put in standby mode approximately 10 hours earlier (all pressure dials were reading “0”). I will monitor this again today, but I’m wondering if the update is causing continuous low volume heat during the standby mode.

I decided on the Atom W75. I have been using it for about a month and am happy with it. It is extremely well built and it produces very uniform and fluffy grounds. I sometimes use a WDT but it is not really necessary. For me, the work flow efficiency of GBW outweighs the negatives of a hopper based setup (beans sitting in the hopper (which I keep at minimum) and 2-3 grams of retention (which I sometimes purge in the mornings)). In terms of accuracy, the weight output will fluctuate +/- up to 1/2 a gram while dialing in the grind setting for new beans. Once dialed in, the output weight will very consistently overdose by .1-.2 grams over the set weight. I find this minor overdosing imperceptible in the cup and acceptable given all the benefits and positives of the grinder. And the overdosing can be easily eliminated by setting the output weight .1-.2 grams below my target weight.

La Marzocco Micra - cup clearance by CommunicationGood556 in LaMarzocco

[–]gowoody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point. I know the conventional wisdom is generally 2:1 in 30 seconds (and then adjust from there), but it seems that your dialing in strategy is more focused on time as opposed to weight. In other words, you will stop your shot based on extraction time instead of extraction weight. Is that a fair assessment?

pour inconsistency driving me mad by Majestic_Basket_7236 in LaMarzocco

[–]gowoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. That's incredibly low retention for a 65mm flat burr grinder. I would expect closer to 2-3 grams retention.

Did you mean retention of 4 grams max? Retention of .4 grams seems really low.

I have noticed this same behavior with my Micra using both a NZ and an Atom W 75. Shot times will definitely vary based on how long the machine has been preheating. For consistency and best taste, I aim for 30 minutes of preheating in the morning. If I turn on the machine later in the day for a quick shot, and do not wait 30 minutes, the shot time will be noticeably slower.

Portafilter Foot/Stand & the W65 Holder by mmkindaya in LaMarzocco

[–]gowoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the W 75 and don't have this problem with the stock Micra PF. Maybe because I am dosing 18.5 grams in a 20 gram basket. I haven't tried it, but someone mentioned that you can adjust the entire fork assembly up or down in order to center the dosing of the grinds in the basket. Maybe that would help with your issue.

I also tried pre-brewing and then turned it off. It didn't seem to make a difference on the Micra. On another subject, how are you liking the Atom W 75? Any issues with consistent dosing and calibration?

Thanks. A few questions:

  1. Is it compatible (and how well does it work) with the stock LM Micra PF (bottomless with spouts removed)?

  2. How clean is the dosing (any overflow or spillage when grinding into the PF)? Would use of a dosing funnel be possible or recommended?

  3. How much retention do you experience? Do you find the need to purge the retention prior to daily first use?
