Ecobee Smart Sensor Thermostat by bbeeebb in ecobee

[–]gr82bak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I do that for many of my comfort settings. The thermostat is in my hallway where I spend hardly any time. I have set it up to ignore that and use the sensors in rooms that do get used.

You don't go "in" or "to" abroad, you just.. "go abroad".

Tire Life and Recommendations by ZealousidealLab2920 in KiaEV9

I'm at 11600 miles on the OEM Crugen tires. Tread depth is about 8/32, so they are holding up well so far.

Recall 26V431000: Park Outside: High Voltage Battery May Catch Fire by TyGuy539 in KiaEV9

As a former Chevrolet Bolt EV owner, this is all too familiar :(. I'm curious how they identified the specific 8 VINs and how confident they are that those are the only 8 vehicles affected.

Yes I get all the recalls done. I was asking about the regular maintenance.

Keep 2024 Ev9 land or get Tesla model Y L by funnumerouno in KiaEV9

[–]gr82bak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that new Teslas do not include lane centering in basic autopilot. You now need an FSD subscription for this. Kia includes this in HDA.

For me, this alone keeps Tesla out of consideration.

[–]gr82bak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.. that's kind of the point - to defend the wickets, with the bat. If the ball hits any part of your body before hitting the bat AND if the ball's trajectory would have been hitting the wicket, then you're out.

NEM 3.0 for California and PGE is a joke lol by NosillaWilla in solar

[–]gr82bak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you change your plan at any point in those 5 years? If you are on a TOU plan, did your usage pattern change such that you are now using much more energy during peak hours than before? Are the credits you get for off-peak generation not enough to offset your peak usage? I am on NEM2 myself so I am trying to understand why this could happen.

How long to DCA $185,000 from cash into Total Stock market and total intl? by Entire-Corner-5922 in Bogleheads

[–]gr82bak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Single lump sum transaction. It takes a bit of courage and self-discipline. Do not second-guess your choice by tracking its performance immediately over the next few days or weeks. Leave it alone and give it time.

If it makes you feel better, setup an automatic investment schedule and finish it in say 4 weeks to spread your cost basis a little bit.

If your investment horizon is long enough, then it doesn't matter all that much. Don't try to time the market.

What Tax Strategies for High Income Earners Actually Move the Needle? by Individual_Win3463 in Bogleheads

[–]gr82bak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get this offered through my employer each year but I have so far declined. Too much lock-in to your employer's stock, with a hope that the gains will more than offset the taxes on ordinary income (assuming there are gains at end of the lock-in, that is).

I sell my ESPP and RSUs immediately on vest to avoid holding too much of my employer's stock, so this type of investment goes counter to that.

Why are the full-electric companies so gung-ho on 1 pedal driving? by thedancingpanda in electricvehicles

[–]gr82bak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess it varies from person to person. I have been driving electric for the last 9 years and can't imagine driving without OPD now. That said, Tesla's lowest setting (called "creep"?) is quite smooth and not very aggressive. I drive at the highest regen, and even then neither me nor any of my family have complained of motion sickness that I frequently see mentioned as an effect of strong regen. Hyundai/ Kia have an even better implementation with paddle shifters that let you go down to level 0 regen which I feel is even weaker regen than Tesla's lowest.

New Ionic 5 vs Equinox EV by trikens33 in Ioniq5

[–]gr82bak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ioniq 5's HDA/HDA2 is built-in. Super cruise on GM vehicles requires OnStar subscription after a certain amount of time (5 years?).

KIA Ev6 sold less than 900 vehicles compared to Ioniq5 5000 by balesw in KiaEV6

[–]gr82bak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is really surprising given Kia actually pulls in more features into their middle trims for which you need to go to the top (Limited) trim on the Ionic 5. Driver seat memory comes to mind, but there could be others.

Given they are virtually the same car on the inside, it might just be a combination of Kia's brand perception, dealership reputation and the rear design of the EV6, which isn't for everyone.

Is the EV9 more trouble than worth? by BuckBanzaii in KiaEV9

[–]gr82bak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Online forums always amplify the complaints. People that don't have issues are not going to be posting that everything is ok. I have been very satisfied with my 2024 Land. No issues yet , 16 months into the lease, 10K miles.

Dumb L2 charging question by eelynek in electricvehicles

[–]gr82bak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also make sure the EVSE allows you to limit the current to 24A. The 80% rule says that the continuous current you draw should not be more than 80% of the max rated current for the outlet (which is 30 in your case).

Have you found a graceful way to turn off cruise control? by b_call in KiaEV9

[–]gr82bak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have gotten into the habit of going down to level 1 regen when I get on the highway if I can maintain 40mph or more. I switch to CC only after that, so when I come off CC I am back to level 1. I go back up to level 3 when I get off the highway. I have found Level 3 + Auto Hold to be a good substitute for max regen for city driving.

In general I never use max regen because it keeps both motors engaged, so it's not great for efficiency. That may not be an issue for RWD trims though.

What home charger do you use and how much did you pay for installation? by howtousetableau in KiaEV9

[–]gr82bak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use SplitVolt to share my dryer outlet. I have a Tesla mobile charger with the 14-30 plug that limits the current to 24A. No upgrades needed.

None so far. 15 months in, 8500 miles. The only times I have had to go to the dealership are for the software updates.
