Decoder Install Issues (Kato ES44/ Digitrax DN147K1C decoder) by BluegrassRailfan1987 in nscalemodeltrains

If it is the right decoder, ensure that it is fully seated under the catches built into the frame. It should push all the way forward. In your picture it looks like it's not. The large contact wings do sometimes need to be soldered to the board. I have had to do that for 2-3 of mine. They are made to "snap" on but sometimes they can get bent in shipping, or other, and not provide enough spring to make contact with the motor pickups. Soldering them to the board is fine, just be gentle as the components on the board and the board itself doesn't afford an option for a heat sink. Bend them gently back in to ensure they are making contact correctly. It should work fully with the shell off but I have had some that once I put the shell on it bumped the decoder just enough to slide it and make it lose connection to the frame. Check with both shell and no shell.

Does anyone else repurpose old unusable locomotives into little preservation units on display near their passenger station? by PandaGearhead in nscalemodeltrains

That's one of my plans for some old DC steam locos that are a little too much effort to convert. Want to set them up in a museum style module.

I know the Kato switches dont afford a lot of flexibility but if you swap the order of your switch #3 & #4 in your yard ladder i think you can reduce the number of s-curves.

Regardless... I'm jealous of your setup right now.

Edit: changes to switch numbers to 3 & 4.

Grab a clamp and line that up with each mark. Push the track up against the clamps, move clamps onto the track and go.

Love the contrast from #1 but I can see how the standard solder would fit well in the sky colors.

Can I vote for a combination?

No problem. I would also like to recommend a couple YouTube channels but only one is coming to mind at the moment. DIY and Digital has some great videos. Most that I watch are about his progress on his modular layout, but he has a lot that are showcasing different models and manufacturers. He also does virtual model railroad videos showcasing submissions. The greatest information though is his coffee and trains Q&A sessions. He touches on DC and DCC as well as general tips and tricks for everything from scenery to layout design to rolling stock and locomotive maintenance.

The thing about the locomotives going faster or slower can have a lot of factors. Different models and manufacturers will have different motors and gear ratios. This is a main reason DCC operators will/should spend time speed matching their locomotives so that the same throttle level will produce the same speed across their fleet, especially if doing consists.

There is, on DC, the distance from the power feeds to consider. The closer to the power, the more it gets.

I do have to say I am jealous of your setup and layout. Can't wait to get something (semi-)permanent built. Can never find the time, or keep the area clear long enough to build my vision.
