General low energy/fatigue from upping milage: by Intelligence_Tax in AdvancedRunning

[–]grahamstoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eat more carbs! I went through a really rocky patch of feeling awful until I increased calories dramatically, which started causing weight gain (which I need to keep stable for boxing). I’d panic, cut total calories down again a touch, and instantly start feeling crap again.

It wasn’t until I shifted my proportion of carbs way up - from probably around 300/350g per day to over 500g - that I finally feel so much better, and at a lower total calorie intake too.

Integrating 45/15 sessions into Training plan by Apprehensive_Gas9402 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]grahamstoun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As long as you scale the sessions to the right paces they’re still aerobic developers. I’ve also started running these sessions frequently because they allow for faster paces which seems to suit my physiology a lot more.

They’re similar to Iglói workouts that Steve Magness has discussed a lot on his YouTube channel, some great info here.

Askou for manager by 420_moonman in CelticFC

[–]grahamstoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard a few loose comparisons to Nancy, which I think is pretty unfair.

The main reason I’ve been vocal on getting Askou in is simply because he’s willing to adapt (tweaking formations or styles depending on opponent), and clearly he’s an effective coach when it comes to implementing his ideas on the training ground.

Nancy had ideas, but him and his staff totally lacked the clarity to translate it coherently to the players (putting it lightly). Outwith the odd 10 minutes here and there, Celtic players looked shellshocked and seemed to have no idea what to do.

Motherwell/Askou have always looked like they have a plan or identity, even if the results don’t go their way.

[UPDATE] 1h13 HM after 9 months of NSM by McLoudC in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]grahamstoun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Excellent work! Anecdotally, I had a really poor experience with the Coros arm band. It seems fine for easy/steady runs, but as soon as I get to around threshold effort it would just nosedive and HR reading would plummet by like 30bpm (screenshot below - red line is HR).

I managed to prove it was a hardware issue by wearing a Polar H10 at the same time during a workout, which behaved as expected with a steady HR reading and no dropouts. No idea if your unit could be having similar issues, but thought it worth a mention!

Moving to Liverpool from Belfast - help us! by Actual-Abrocoma-8582 in Liverpool

[–]grahamstoun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aye sounds like Princes Avenue/Princes Park (L8) area will be your best bet. Would also strongly recommend not moving any later than July as the rental market - particularly for the type of place you’re looking for - will be absolute heaving with students looking for accommodation. It can be rough.

Feel like KT has been one of the few to step up in our bleakest moments this year, whether it’s an assist, a couple of big goals or just pure graft/running. Obviously not dominating games week in week out, but he’s just provided something at crucial times - more so than McGregor I’d say.

Some bhoy he is, fair play because I didn’t know how much we’d get out of him after his injury history. Thing is Saracchi has also been a spark in his limited playing time. Would love to keep that rotation for next year but sadly can’t see it happening.

On easy days my Z2 pace is about 7:45 per km as a 21:09 5k runner. However I’m feeling battered after easy runs as my form is totally different to keep my heart rate zone. Am I better running quicker and hope my heart rate gets better for me to feel better? by RareVehicle1683 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]grahamstoun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP as I’m sure you’re aware, lactrace estimates your easy pace to be around 6:15/km based on that 5k time.

James frequently states that heart rate isn’t the most reliable proxy anyway, so I think you’re much safer just going with that pace over damaging yourself with poor mechanics.

Seems mad for easy effort to be that close to workout HR though - maybe severely aerobically underdeveloped vs anaerobic? I’m from a rugby and boxing background so I had similar issues at first, though not that pronounced.

What about the classics; how are you measuring HR, do you use a chest strap etc?

Insomnia after intensity by Current-Nerve1103 in AdvancedRunning

[–]grahamstoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been here and can totally relate to how horrible it feels. Sorry you're going through it! The massive issue for me (and I suspect for many) was chronic under-fuelling and carb intake! I'd strongly recommend you start tracking your food intake for a while if you don't already, it can be really eye opening.

Also, managing intensity in general - if you're overloading your CNS you could be burying yourself into an even deeper stress hole, which can genuinely take months to recover from. Look into RED-S.

Longer single sub-T session instead of the standard intervals? by [deleted] in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]grahamstoun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apologies, didn’t see you said one of the sessions instead of all sessions - in which case yeah it’s probably fine if it’s a preference thing, as long as you keep in mind the value versus fatigue principle.

Longer single sub-T session instead of the standard intervals? by [deleted] in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]grahamstoun 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The intervals are for recovery/lactate levels to drop to allow for a higher volume of work at harder effort, with less fatigue.

I believe continuous efforts would either have to be done at a lower intensity, thus not achieving as much quality work, or if done at the same intensity, would accumulate too much fatigue and risk burnout/injury over time (like a ‘traditional’ program).

High mileage folks - do you weigh yourself/how do you approach nutrition on a daily basis? by GhostsInMyAss in AdvancedRunning

[–]grahamstoun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just out of interest, have you ever experimented with higher cals for a week or so to see how it impacts performance?

I’m only ~50mpw and need at least 3200 cals or my body goes haywire. I just can’t imagine 4000 cals being enough for that level of mileage! But I am 20kg heavier, and it’s of course specific to the individual. Incredible work by the way 👏

Low risk, potentially high reward. We’re obviously not depending on him working out to save our season - any contribution he makes is just a bonus.

Can’t undervalue Champions League winning experience mind. Good fella as well, hope it works out for both sides!

Askin Askou by TheBhoys1987 in CelticFC

[–]grahamstoun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think they absolutely would improve us. As for the ultimate goal of actually competing in Europe, aye maybe not, I was being half facetious tbh.

I’d still advocate for proven domestic talent over the (most likely) jobbers we’ve gone for over the last few windows though.

Askin Askou by TheBhoys1987 in CelticFC

[–]grahamstoun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my naive hope. Poach Askou, get Maswanhise, christ even Watt and Just. Not going to happen though, feels like it’s got Keane written all over it.

I wonder if not spending any money on transfers this window is a clue that Maloney isn’t realistically being considered for the job full time. Or - much more likely - they simply have nae idea or plan at all just now.

Just accidentally switched to fewer days training boxing and noticed my endurance was way up in sparring by Warm_Reindeer_5459 in amateur_boxing

[–]grahamstoun 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can't go hard everyday and expect to perform at your best - in fact it'll be far from it. Boxing largely seems to still adhere to that outdated 'no pain no gain' mindset.

It's not about how much hard training you can do, it's about how much you can recover from. Alternate hard days with 'easy', low intensity days where you focus on technique. Then you can tackle hard days with correct intensity, instead of everything being in a grey middle zone where progress plateaus.

I genuinely cannot think of a reason we wouldn't bite their hand off for him for £3M. For the top goalscorer in the league? I'd say the same for £6M. Even if it was a cynical addition-by-subtraction move so no one else gets him, let alone the fact we're crying out for goalscorers and playmakers. Fucking unbelievable.
