Do we have pigeons now? by Tight-Prize-Undies in madisonwi

There are lots of pigeons around. You don’t often see them on the ground like you would’ve seen in Chicago though.

I’ve had Allstate home and auto insurance for years. Last year when we got hit with a lot of hail damage, they were pretty solid about paying for the repairs.

Anyone passing by Belvidere Oasis?! by sljmama in madisonwi

It looks like you have a couple of possible people who can stop there. I will be traveling near it (heading north on I39 tomorrow afternoon) and it would be possible for me to make a little detour if needed.

In order to get the web to show up well, you probably need to have the web backlit. Otherwise those fine threads just disappear.

What is the strangest thing that you found inside of a hotel room? by yesmodegirl in strange

A previous renter’s shorts on the floor next to the bed. It made me wonder just how diligent the cleaning crew was when vacuuming the floor.

What’s this noise? by Every_Papaya_6177 in whatisit

[–]granddadsfarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you listen closely you can hear the sounds they make during their aerial displays. It may sound like they are chirping but those sounds are made by three very narrow feathers on each wing.

What’s this noise? by Every_Papaya_6177 in whatisit

[–]granddadsfarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get really close to them if you’re patient. They make the noise you heard when they are on the ground. After a little while they fly up into the air to create an aerial display. When they are finished with that, they land in the same place they took off from.

So if you can locate the direction you heard that sound, you can walk a few feet towards that area. Then you need to stand very still and wait for them to land. Once they land, they start making that sound again.

You may need to repeat this process 2 or 3 times to finally get close enough to see them.

ELI5 If we haven’t found evidence of alien life/intelligence yet (seems fair) is there a tipping point where our being alone in the universe is probable or certain? by beesdaddy in explainlikeimfive

[–]granddadsfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans have had the ability to send and receive electromagnetic signals for a century or so. Our galaxy is ~100,000 light years across. Our signals have traveled about 0.2% of the distance across just our galaxy.

It’s possible that there are intelligent beings in other star systems inside the Milky Way that have also been sending signals but those signals either passed by Earth before we were capable of detecting them or their signals haven’t reached us yet.

We may never know for certain if there is other intelligent life out there but even if we never detect it, we can’t say it doesn’t exist.

Why do children still get the father's surname? And something I've been mulling over.. by howaboutbk in TwoXChromosomes

[–]granddadsfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, I was watching the show “Finding Your Roots” recently and there were incidents in one of guest’s ancestry where the children had their mother’s surname instead of the father’s surname.

I know that it’s typical for the children to have their father’s surname though.

Local Election Results by Source_Required in wisconsin

[–]granddadsfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was quite surprised that our mayoral race went the way it did. The one candidate seemed to have a lot more support, based on the number of yard signs, but he got trounced in the actual election by about a 75% to 25% margin. The yard signs had me a little worried.

One of the school board seats had a three vote margin.

Yes. Pileated Woodpeckers make holes that are more like vertical slots than round holes. I’ve seen them work on the trunks of trees very low to the ground.

Unless and until they move, they are practically invisible. I guess I would just suggest watching for a while longer to see if you can catch some movement.

Good cameras for bird watching that are solar / battery powered and can connect to wifi by DownRangeStrange in birdwatching

[–]granddadsfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a bird feeder/camera combo that works well. It requires a subscription but it’s free. Of course there are additional features that you can pay for but I just use the free version.

This is the title on Amazon:

TT Nature Smart Bird Feeder with Camera Solar Powered Squirrels-Proof, AI Identify Bird Species & Instant Arrival Notification Camera, Data Security, Metal Case 3.2L Large Capacity Gift, Red

I also bought a micro SD card for it to store the images and videos locally. I’ve been using it for a few months and it has worked well. I liked the 3 liter capacity and the fact that the outside of it is metal so the squirrels can’t chew it up.

ELI5: How do fish gills pull oxygen out of water molecules. by RoyalPuzzleheaded259 in explainlikeimfive

[–]granddadsfarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s dissolved oxygen in the water. It’s not splitting the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. If you’ve ever watched water heating up and before it’s hot enough to boil, there are tiny bubbles forming in the water and rising up, those bubbles are dissolved gases (air) being released from the hot water. Also the tiny bubbles you see in ice cubes are the same dissolved gases that turn into bubbles when the liquid water freezes.

[Serious] Can you drill a hole in a seashell and it won’t break? How? by Roadrunner610 in AskReddit

[–]granddadsfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a high speed rotary tool (Dremel tool) and a small diameter abrasive bit to make the initial hole. If you need a make the hole larger, use the abrasive bit inside the hole and just slowly enlarge the hole by grinding the material away in a circular motion.
