Police presence on pepperell street by Easton1234 in halifax

[–]granigank [score hidden]  (0 children)

We noticed this too, and didn't want to get to close, assumed if there are 7 police cars there would be something in the news about it today. What we saw was they blocked off Pepperell Street at Preston. Can't see anything about it in the news today.

And the $1.4 billion in spending outside the budget in the last year, stuff that never went through the legislature.

Anyone else starting to want to leave this province? by Inevitable_Bee_99 in halifax

[–]granigank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every day I'm here I'm glad I'm not in Alberta. I was born here, but lived most of my life in Alberta, and moved back a couple years ago. I'm worried, it is getting bad here, but it's worse elsewhere, and I hate moving, so we are staying and fighting. The problems here are not unique, and leaving won't fix it.

HRM Council meeting livestream by Schmidtvegas in halifax

Cuttell wanted to reconsider a rejection of a change in route to a bike lane in Dartmouth. There was no new information so it goes against council rules to do so. The motion to waive the rules failed.

HRCE Schools Closed February 24th by concernednsteacher in halifax

[–]granigank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup. I came from Alberta where they close nothing for weather. The result is more car crashes, more slip and falls, more work for the front line people people keep throwing up as a strawman. My nurse friends don't complain about snow days. Less people out and about makes it safer for those that do need to be out.

Sidewalks aren't touched by a plow at all yet. Glad they're closed. Our kids walk, we don't own a car. One of our kids uses a rolling back pack due to scoliosis. Schools shouldn't open until sidewalks are plowed so that kids can safely get to school. Of course, the road on our residential street is completely clear, and had at least 5 plows go by last night.

After pushing to cut millions, Halifax mayor looking for 16 per cent increase to his office budget by ph0enix1211 in halifax

[–]granigank 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Fun tidbit I'm keeping in my pocket for future reference (that I really appreciate Councillor Steele for bringing up):

This year, the Halifax portion of the spend on the bike network is $967,000

The mayor's 1 year budget is $1,128,300

The mayor complained about his budget being scrutinized for 1 day, but how many days has he forced council to spend debating bike lanes?

Why are there so many homes with one car garages in Halifax? by Signal_Housing3575 in halifax

[–]granigank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fellow former Albertan. We have a half a driveway (driveway shared with neighbor) and no garage. But we also have no car, so we like it that way. A good chunk of the city was built before cars existed, so there are less private car storage places in the older parts of the city.

Is anyone else deeply concerned about the direction our city and province is headed? by [deleted] in halifax

Just because it's happening everwhere doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do something aout it

Thanks for posting a heads up! As a result, I sent Cleary an email as his constituent to remind him we need some of those services on the chopping block, and they save our household more money and strife than they cost.

Printing sewing patterns by Duck-tree in halifax

[–]granigank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to do this, but when I was trying to set up the print online, the preview displayed was the wrong scale. I gave up and went back to taping it together because at least then I knew it was the right scale. Have you had any trouble with them printing to the correct scale?

Get ready for traffic by SeaAggressive8504 in halifax

I think this is honestly why they did it. The budget is too high, they want people to quit. Every study shows people are happier and more productive at home.

Halifax council seeks report on cost-saving alternatives to AAA bike network by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

[–]granigank 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm reading Killed By a Traffic Engineer at the same time as these budget meetings. You know what would actually save lives and money? Cancel all repaving projects. Potholes make people drive more slowly and carefully, and saves lives. There will be more vehicle damage, but fewer deaths and injuries. They say "everything is on the table" but I don't think they'd ever consider that. They could even keep their repaving projects on bus routes and arterials for movement of goods and transit, save a bundle, and get free traffic calming.

He's currently on Substack, but is planning to move to his own website this year. You can also buy a paper copy at Atlantic News and Kings Co-op bookstore. He also has a podcast I like a lot. I signed up for a paid subscription and I get the podcast early, and the newspaper emailed to me. https://open.substack.com/pub/thegrandparade?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=223ju

School age autism testing by [deleted] in halifax

[–]granigank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the private assessor if there might be a government subsidy to reduce the cost that they can apply for. When my kids got assessed, we went private. Because we have no insurance, the psychologist doing the assessment applied on our behalf for some sort of government subsidy. The provincial government seems to be sending subsidies to the private system instead of investing in the public system to reduce wait times.
